WALNUTS for POWER: Polyphenols, Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Weight Loss, and EneRgy

This is a randomized control trial testing the effect of walnut supplementation on prostate cancer progression in 50 men with biopsy confirmed prostate cancer and planning to undergo RP. Patients consented to the study will be randomly assigned to either continue their usual diets (control arm) or to the walnut arm for 4-10 weeks depending on the window between their consent date and the date for RP.

Exercise Training and Time-restricted Feeding in Overweight and Obese Adults

Overweight and obesity prevalence in adolescents and adults continues to remain significantly high in the United States. While diet and exercise improve many consequences of obesity, dietary strategies are not always nutrient sufficient and manageable long-term. Thus, highly complaint dietary strategies that lead to fat loss, while maintaining muscle mass, are needed. Time-restricted feeding (TRF) may be an ideal dietary approach for reducing fat mass and cardiovascular disease risk, while diminishing the loss of muscle mass and strength associated with obesity and aging. TRF, unlike continuous energy restriction, does not require a restrictive energy intake10. TRF requires individuals to consume calories within a set window of time (example = 8 hours), inducing a fasting window of 16 hours per day. There are few human studies on TRF that measure their effects in combination with both aerobic and resistance training. One recent study found an 8-hour TRF program (16-hour fast) improved insulin sensitivity, decreased fat mass, and maintained muscle mass in resistance-trained males after 8 weeks. Thus, the feasibility of TRF as dietary approach should be investigated further.The aims of this study are to: 1) determine whether time-restricted feeding (TRF) is an effective dietary strategy for reducing fat mass while preserving fat-free mass with aerobic and resistance training; 2) evaluate potential changes in health-related biomarkers (cardiovascular profile and anabolic-catabolic hormones) and muscle health indicators (mass, strength and quality) after 8 weeks of concurrent training with TRF; and 3) examine the influence of caloric intake and macronutrient consumption on muscle health in the TRF and normal feeding (NF) groups pre- to post-concurrent resistance training.

This study is an ancillary study to the Utilizing Protein During Weight Loss to Impact Physical Function (UPLIFT) trial (NCT03074643) to evaluate the effects of diet composition (i.e., amount of protein and carbohydrate) during a 6-month weight loss intervention and 12-months of follow-up on bone phenotypes in obese older adults. Participants will receive either a protein or carbohydrate supplement along with a behavioral weight loss intervention.

Efficacy of Diet and Hypnotic Suggestions or Telemedicine in Obesity Management

The aim of the study is the assessment of the effectiveness of medical nutrition therapy (MNT) among obese patients, including a well-balanced low-calories diet, an individual dietary counseling conducted by dietitians and supported by telemedicine (T) or hypnotic suggestions (HS). The study will cover a group of 90 adult patients, both sexes, with obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m^2) undergoing MNT a dietetic treatment. Three arms are planned in the study scheme, according to the scheme: Group 1 - individual MNT (30 people); Group 2 -individual MNT and T (30 people); Group 3 - individual MNT and HS (30 people). The authors hope that the results of the study will allow to develop a new model of the most effective management of obesity, resulting in weight reduction and maintaining this effect over time. The results obtained during the study will also allow to assess the impact of the therapy applied on lifestyle changes, dietary habits and the knowledge about the disease among obese patients.

Approaches for Improving Long-term Weight Loss

All participants will receive a 12-week, in-person standard behavioral weight loss program followed by either 12 weeks of yoga instruction or 12 weeks of cooking/dietary education instruction (determined via randomization procedures). To Predict Weight Loss Response to Liraglutide (Saxenda®), From fMRI-based Determination of Food Cue Reactivity

The study is a single center, randomized, double blind, placebo controlled; parallel-group repeated measures design. Subjects will be randomly assigned to either Saxenda® or placebo group after baseline assessments. The study will consist of a 4-week partial dose period (Liraglutide 0.6mg, 1.2mg, 1.8mg, 2.4 mg) and a 12-week full-dose (Liraglutide 3.0 mg) period. The placebo group will administer equivalent volumes of the pre-filled solutions from pen-injector at the same time, using the same method during this period. The study proposes to identify factors contributing to early weight loss response in a Saxenda® treatment program. Specifically, the proposed experiments will help determine if Saxenda® changes brain functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Food Cue Reactivity (fMRI-FCR) and whether the magnitude of that change is associated with changes in behavioral and physiological variables (hunger, satiety, cravings and weight loss).

Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT) to Induce Weight Loss in Obese Subjects

Obesity is associated with changes in the composition of the intestinal microbiota, and the obese microbiome appears to be more efficient in harvesting energy from the diet. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) represents a clinically feasible way to restore the gut microbial ecology, and has proven to be a breakthrough for the treatment of recurrent Clostridium difficile infection. The therapy is generally well tolerated and appeared safe. No clinical studies have assessed the dosage of FMT in obese subjects.
