Dietary Pork, Appetite and Weight Loss in Human

The entire study protocol will last 13 weeks. Women will be randomly assigned to one of two experimental groups: high and low protein. All women will consume their unrestricted habitual diet during week 1 while baseline testing and measurements are taken. Starting at week 2, women in both groups will be counseled to consume a 750 kcal/day energy deficit diet containing either the RDA (LP group) or more than the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) (HP group) for protein. The energy restriction period will continue for 12 weeks (through study week 13) and is expected to result in body weight reduction of approximately 17 pounds. Testing and measurements will be repeated during week 13.

Chewing Gum for Weight Loss

This is a randomized controlled trial of the effects of chewing gum on body weight. The investigators will randomly assign 200 overweight or mildly obese adults to one of two groups. Participants must be otherwise healthy and ages 19-50. The control group will receive only printed information on optimal diet and increasing physical activity. The intervention group will be instructed to chew gum following meals and in place of snacks for a minimum of 90 minutes per day. The intervention group also will receive the same information on optimal diet and increasing physical activity as the control group. In this 8-week intervention, the primary outcome will be change in body weight, and secondary outcomes will be changes in body mass income (BMI), waist circumference, and blood pressure. The protocol includes 3 clinic visits to assess outcomes: baseline, 4 weeks after randomization, and 8 weeks after randomization. Adherence to the gum chewing protocol will be assessed at clinic visits and during 2 telephone calls at 2 weeks and 6 weeks post-randomization. The investigators' hypothesis is that gum-chewers will lose more weight than those who receive information only.

Breastfeeding and Exercise for Healthy Infants and Postpartum Moms Too!

Approximately 8 million American women suffer from osteoporosis, and one out of every two women over the age of 50 will have an osteoporotic-related fracture in their lifetime (42). While epidemiological studies suggest that pregnancy and lactation are not associated with risk of fractures later in life, these studies did not control for site-specific decrements in bone mineral density (BMD). In addition, 55% of American women between the ages of 20 to 39 are overweight (14). Excess weight retention after pregnancy increases a woman's risk for developing a chronic disease later in life (44). There is a paucity of research on exercise and dietary interventions in postpartum lactating women aimed at promotion of bone health and weight loss. The goal of this study is to promote long-term lifestyle changes through a home based strength training, aerobic, and nutrition intervention targeting overweight lactating women. The objective is to attenuate lactation-induced bone loss and promote weight loss. We hypothesize that the intervention group will lose a greater amount of fat mass while preserving lean mass and bone mineral mass and increase levels of anabolic hormones through diet and exercise compared to the minimal care group. Additionally, the acquisition of such knowledge is unique since no other studies have measured growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor-1 in lactating women with respect to bone and exercise. This intervention will encourage breastfeeding, weight loss and an increase in bone density resulting in healthy infants and mothers. The proposed research is the first to examine the effects of a resistance exercise and weight loss intervention on attenuation of lactation-induced bone loss in overweight women. To our knowledge, this is the first study to use MyPyramid for Menu Planner for Moms for dietary counseling using the total diet approach. The expected outcomes are the intervention group will lose weight while preserving lean body mass, bone mineral mass and increase cardiovascular fitness and strength compared to the minimal care group. Additionally, the exercise group will improve the overall quality of their diet using internet based technology. An increase in activity and promotion of weight loss through a modest reduction in calories may lead to overall improvement of the mother's bone and health status later in life.

Since many overweight and obese individuals find it difficult to adhere to daily CR, this diet option may improve adherence with these dietary restriction protocols. This, in turn, will allow a greater percent of the overweight and obese population to lose weight, maintain weight loss, and prevent future occurrences of coronary heart disease.

Obesity and osteoarthritis (OA) co-exist in an increasing part of the population. The two diseases intertwine in several ways. The evolution in the population shows a tendency towards deterioration of both by increasing general age and weight. The two diseases share pathogenetic features and the development of one disease increases the risk of the other and may be the onset of a vicious circle. There is a link between treatments of these two diseases as well. There is now solid (gold) evidence that by treating effectively the obesity of patients with co-occurring OA, the functional status is dramatically ameliorated; the short-term results are equal to that of a joint replacement. The long-term efficacy of a weight loss remains to be shown. OA is definitely one of many diseases in which obesity must be taken seriously into account when planning a correct treatment of patients. This trial is an extension of the former CAROT trial NCT00655941. The participants of this trial are recruited for a prolongation of the dietary intervention consisting of a group therapy with low-energy diet in a randomized, two group (each n = 75 patients) study of maintenance of weight loss by continuing with supplementary either 3 x 5 weeks dietary supplements only or once-daily supplement. The hypothesis is that maintenance of the already induced weight loss is most efficiently ensured by the once-daily program.
