The purpose of this 2-stage intervention study is to investigate the effect of a novel nutraceutical (containing tetrahydro iso-alpha acids derived from hops) on weight loss and weight loss maintenance in obese participants.
The PILI @ Work project is a 5 year randomized control trial to adapt a weight loss program for the employees of Native Hawaiian-serving organizations in Hawai'i. The study has two specific aims: Specific Aim 1: To adapt and implement a weight loss and weight loss maintenance program in Native Hawaiian-serving organizations, working with employee representatives to determine how the intervention can be best implemented with employees at the worksites. Specific Aim 2: Among employees participating in the program, to test whether weight loss maintenance program in DVD format is as effective as the weight loss maintenance program in a group face to face format in maintaining weight loss for employees who complete weight loss program. The investigators hypothesize that the PILI @ Work interventions can be effectively adapted and implemented in a worksite settings with active participation by employees and employers. The investigators also hypothesize that overweight (BMI ≥ 25) and obese (BMI ≥ 30) employees who complete weight loss portion of the intervention, and are randomized to received the weight loss maintenance intervention via DVD will have similar success at maintaining weight loss compared to those randomized to PILI Maintenance in group meetings or settings. The investigators hypothesize that will will also be true for physical functioning,blood pressure, daily self-weighing, low to moderate fat and low calorie diets, and daily physical activity.
To achieve the long term goal of strengthening behavioral weight loss programs, the purpose of this project is to test an enhanced, daily weight tracking instruction against the current standard of care (weekly weight tracking) and an alternative mode of care (no weight tracking). The investigators postulate that daily weight tracking will boost ongoing awareness of and engagement in dietary intake and physical activity monitoring, thus improving weight loss outcomes. The central hypothesis of the study is that daily weight tracking will improve weight loss processes and outcomes relative to less frequent weight tracking, without adverse effects.
One out of two adults in Canada is currently overweight and therefore at increased risk for a number of medical conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attacks and stroke. Obesity is less prevalent in populations consuming large amounts of dietary fibre, suggesting that fibre intake could play an important role in prevention and progression of obesity and diabetes and other conditions. Several studies have suggested that fibre has a positive effect on blood sugar and may help lower body weight. The purpose of this study is to help better understand the effect of adding fibre supplementation to a low calorie diet on blood sugar control and weight loss. The investigators hypothesize that blood sugar control will improve in participants in the fibre supplementation group. Men and women, with stable Type 2 Diabetes (e.g. no medication change in the last 3 months), between 18 - 75 years of age, and with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 27 - 60 kg/m2 can participate in this study.
The primary aim of this study is to determine whether reduced intensity behavioral weight loss treatment (rBWL) + Peer Health Coaches yields significantly greater weight loss than rBWL + Mentor Health Coaches and rBWL alone.
Since overweight and obesity, a risk factor for various diseases, is a prevalent problem in the modern society, it is important to search for new strategies to counteract this. In contrast to in person support, the internet provides a low cost opportunity, which is able to reach a large part of the population. Therefore a web-based weight loss program may be an adequate mean for many people. Now it is hypothesised that a web-based weight loss program is able to support a reduction of body weight and weight-related cardiovascular risk factors effectively and to promote a healthier lifestyle. It is expected that program use, compared to a control group, results in greater reductions in body weight and cardiovascular risk.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether a nutrition intervention during a rehabilitation stay followed by nutritional advice after discharge, can improve the nutritional status of the patients after 3 months.
In this study, we will provide supplemental vitamin D in postmenopausal overweight/obese women, and hypothesize that it will not affect areal BMD, but will alter bone compartments (trabecular and cortical bone). In addition, higher vitamin D intake will increase serum 25OHD and suppress serum PTH and bone turnover during weight reduction. Secondary outcomes include the influence of vitamin D and weight loss on markers of insulin resistance and on cognitive tests of attention, learning, and memory.
The Lose Now NC research study aims to determine feasibility by delivering a community based weight loss program for 4 months in Kannapolis, NC in a large group format compared with smaller group format, (recruiting approximately 225 participants from Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties and randomizing them to large or small group in-person sessions coupled with an interim internet program) to examine reach and recruitment potential, pilot intervention procedures, collect process measures to determine satisfaction, adherence, attrition, and estimate weight loss for planning a larger trial.
