Filter by:A digital intervention to provide supplemental infant feeding support to mothers enrolled in WIC. The trial begins prenatally and continues through 3-months postpartum and tests the feasibility and acceptability of a text messaging intervention aimed at increasing responsive bottle feeding as well as breastfeeding duration and exclusivity among mothers enrolled in WIC using evidence-based components such as interactive self-monitoring and feedback. Recruitment and enrollment never started at Duke for the Intervention represented in this record. The overall status of recruiting and actual start date were previously entered in error.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate safety and efficacy of twice-daily ARD-101 in subjects at least one year after bariatric surgery (sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass).
Over 70% of U.S. adults have overweight or obesity. Currently, the most efficacious behavioral intervention for obesity is standard behavioral treatment (SBT), often composed of group sessions, calorie goals, and physical activity goals. With this approach, participants often lose 8-10% of the person's baseline weight, and also decrease risk for cardiovascular disease. Long-term weight loss, however, is limited; many participants return to baseline weight within five years following treatment. One reason SBT may not create long-term weight loss may be due to treatment components that teach participants to rely on external methods for changing eating decisions (e.g., counting calories, restricting certain foods), rather than internal cues of hunger and satiety. Because individuals with obesity report significant challenges with adhering to these cues, augmenting behavioral interventions with appetite self-regulation training may be a solution. Thus, the investigator propose to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a 6-month remotely-delivered appetite regulation + lifestyle modification intervention to treat obesity.
A total of 100 patients aged 18-60 years with confirmed diagnosis of achalasia cardia will be recruited prospectively. In this study, patients diagnosed with achalasia cardia (prior to per oral endoscopic myotomy treatment) will undergo comprehensive evaluation of their nutritional status. All the participants will be asked about the details enlisted in pre-tested proforma.The evaluation will include demographic data(age, gender, food preferences, socio economic status,underlying diseases such as hypertension diabetes mellitus etc) anthropometric assessment (height, weight, Body Mass Index, weight loss and duration, percentage weight loss, midupperarm circumference , triceps skin fold, hand grip strength) and biochemical assessment (Hemoglobin, serum albumin and serum pre-albumin,total protein, serum Vitamin D, calcium, B12, serum iron). Each patients' dietary habits will be assessed by SUBJECTIVE GLOBAL ASSESMENT questionnaire (weight change, dietary intake, gastrointestinal symptoms, functional capacity, oedema, subcutaneous fat,muscle wasting, ascites.The obtained data will be statistically analyzed and interpreted. As we are in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic, we will be taking utmost safety precautions to prevent cross-infection. The doctor performing the study and the accompanying technician will be donning the personal protection equipment all throughout the study.
The purpose of this study is to enable the investigator to conduct proof of concept work related to the feasibility, acceptability, initial efficacy and mechanisms of action (focusing on maternal and infant modifiable factors) for a novel self-management intervention for pregnant women.
Allergy prevalence is increasing steadily with some describing as the "epidemic of the twenty-first century". Maternal diet during pregnancy has been linked to offspring allergy risk, so it represents a potential target for allergy prevention. The Mediterranean Diet (MD) is considered one of the healthiest dietary models which exerts regulatory effects on immune system, due to the synergistic and interactive combinations of nutrients. We aim to study the effects of MD in pregnancy on the onset of allergic diseases at 2 years of age in the offspring.
During the COVID-19 epidemic, the time spent by adults on the stomach has increased. Therefore, the likelihood of adverse changes in lifestyles has increased. In this study, the changes in nutritional habits, physical activities and body weights of adult individuals during the epidemic will be evaluated. A questionnaire including questions about nutritional habits, physical activity status and changes in body weights will be administered to individuals. The results will be evaluated with the appropriate statistical method. The survey will be administered once. The estimated time to reach the total number is 3 months.
The World Federation of Obesity warns that the main health problem of the next decade will be childhood obesity. Furthermore, obesity and its consequences have been reported to originate in intrauterine life. Gestational obesity produces profound effects on fetal genome programming, thereby inducing changes in prenatal metabolism that extend to the postnatal period, which is also associated with increased susceptibility to developing cardiovascular and metabolic diseases in adulthood. Excessive maternal weight gain early in pregnancy has been repeatedly associated with increased adiposity in childhood and adolescence of its offspring. Obesity is a complex phenomenon influenced by social determinants of health, which include demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral, environmental, and genetic factors. At the primary prevention level, nutrition constitutes a modifiable risk factor during pregnancy. Therefore establishing healthy nutritional behaviors during the first trimester of pregnancy is key to the primary prevention of the intergenerational transmission of obesity. New ways of approaching the target population are required to maintain nutritional recommendations as a priority in the daily decision-making (top of mind) of pregnant women. For many women, this period is a powerful motivator for self-care. Interventions based on behavioral theories provide a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms that determine health-related behavior change and have the potential to be more effective in promoting adherence to weight gain control. Social Cognitive Theory (TCS) is an integrated model of behavior change commonly applied in mobile health interventions that address diet, physical activity or weight loss. Mobile health programs (mHealth) are potentially more effective than face-to-face interventions, especially during a public health emergency like the COVID-19 outbreak. This proposal intends to "deliver" messages with evidence-based information directly to pregnant women, in order to influence their nutritional behavior to avoid excessive gestational weight gain. The hypothesis of this proposal is that the mHealth intervention called "mami-educ", which consists of sending messages with nutrition counseling during pregnancy through the Telegram platform, is effective in reducing excessive gestational weight gain in pregnant women attending Family Health Care Centers in an urban and predominantly rural area.
Nutritional status during pregnancy plays an important role in maternal health and birth outcomes. While few factors impacting nutritional status during pregnancy have been identified, studies of undernutrition in children have revealed a key role for the gut microbiome. Remarkably, studies examining the dynamics of the maternal gut microbiome before and during pregnancy and its impact on birth outcomes are limited. This study is being conducted to investigate how a mother's nutritional status and her gut microbiome during pregnancy contribute to the birth outcomes and health of her baby. The gut microbiome is the totality of microorganisms (e.g. bacteria, viruses, fungi) living in the gastrointestinal tract. This study will focus on married pregnant women 24 years and younger living in Matiari District in Pakistan. The focus is on younger women due to their vulnerability to undernutrition. Pregnant participants, and upon delivery, their newborns will be followed throughout pregnancy and for a year afterwards. Throughout this period, the investigators will collect stool samples, rectal swabs, blood samples, health assessments, nutritional and dietary assessments and birth/ labour details. The goal is to define the relationship between a mother's nutritional status and her microbiome dynamics during pregnancy and how they contribute to the birth outcomes and growth of her newborn. Investigators hypothesizes that alterations of the microbiota in the maternal gut (dysbiosis) is exacerbated by nutritional status or pathogen exposure during pregnancy. This impacts weight gain because of impaired nutrient absorption, and can lead to corresponding negative birth outcomes.
The purpose of this online follow-up study is to investigate health app use in pregnant women and through a pilot intervention trial investigate whether the addition of evidence-based information on health-promoting lifestyle delivered via the health app has an effect on lifestyle habits (gestational weight, diet quality and physical activity) during pregnancy.
