Filter by:Cockayne syndrome (CS) is related to defective DNA transcription and/or repair and belongs to the family of Nucleotide Excision Repair. It is an autosomal recessive multisystemic disorder characterized by mental retardation, microcephaly, severe growth failure with lipoatrophia, sensorial impairment, cutaneous photosensitivity, dental decay, enophtalmios. The disease is progressive causing severe impairments but there's currently no therapeutics for the disease. Growth failure, feeding difficulties and lipoatrophia are prognostic keys of CS but physiopathology is unknown. According to preliminary assays, our goal is to test the hypothesis that cachexia is due to hypometabolism. We also want to test the potential link between this basal metabolism modification and mitochondrial dysfunction and somatotrope axis, and correlation between the basal metabolism degree and global severity of the disease.

ProtonicsTM Knee brace has been suggested as an intervention for patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). However, the effectiveness of this knee brace compared to traditional conservative methods knee rehabilitation is lacking. The objective of this randomized controlled trial was to compare the effect of ProtonicsTM knee brace vs. sports cord on knee pain and function in patients with PFPS.
Analysis of data from the recently completed NIH Child Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) study found a manualized behavioral treatment approach strongly superior to psychoeducation/supportive therapy for reducing tic severity in 9-16 year-old youths with TS or other Chronic Tic Disorders. Buoyed by the success of the NIH study, the research group now seeks to extend and disseminate the CBIT treatment through the systematic adaptation of the CBIT protocol for use across a broader range of ages and treatment settings. The goal of the this project is to develop a downward extension of the CBIT therapist guide and parent workbook for use in 4-8 year old children with chronic tics. The revised CBIT-JR manual/workbook will be pilot tested in five children at each of the three study sites (UCLA, UWM, Weill Cornell) in order to provide initial data regarding treatment feasibility and acceptability as well as our ability to implement the new intervention, along with relevant quality control procedures, consistently across sites. These pilot data will then be used to seek R01 support for a larger controlled multisite trial examining the efficacy of CBIT-JR. Although arguably more complex than a single-site design, we have opted for a multsite study in order: 1) to take advantage of the established productive collaborative relationship and collective expertise in childhood tic disorders and psychosocial treatment development across our three sites, 2) to collect the proposed feasibility data in a much shorter period of time than otherwise possible, and as noted above 3) to demonstrate the cross-site portability of the treatment - which will be necessary if we are to obtain subsequent funding for a larger-scale efficacy trial.
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) causes the lungs to fail due to the collection of fluid in the lungs (pulmonary oedema). ARDS is common in severely ill patients in Intensive Care Units and is associated with a high mortality and a high morbidity in those who survive. ARDS occurs in approximately 20% case of COVID-19 and respiratory failure is the leading cause of mortality. There is a large economic burden with direct healthcare costs, but also indirectly due to the impact on the carer and patient through the patients inability to return to full time employment. There is little evidence for effective drug (pharmacological) treatment for ARDS. There is increasing information that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) might be important in treating ARDS. REALIST will investigate if a single infusion of MSCs will help in the treatment of ARDS. The first step will be to first of all determine what dose of MSCs is safe and then divide patients suffering from ARDS into two groups, one of which will get MSCs and the other a harmless dummy (or placebo) infusion, who will then be followed up to determine if lung function improves. If effective this may lead to further research to determine if MSCs are effective in patients with ARDS.
To determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD), as a percentage of calories consumed, of triheptanoin (C7 oil; C7) in a pediatric and adult patient population genetically diagnosed with glucose transporter type 1 deficiency disorder (G1D).
The Investigators will measure if hepatic metabolism is upregulated in obese girls with PCOS and hepatic steatosis (HS), compared to PCOS without HS and obese controls without HS.
The ASSESS national multi-center prospective cohort (Assessment of Systemic complications (Signs) and Evolution in Sjögren's Syndrome "SS") was set up in 2006 thanks to a grant of the French Ministry of Health. Fifteen centers for autoimmune diseases consecutively included consecutive patients with Primary Sjögren's Syndrome "pSS" fulfilling American-European Consensus Criteria (AECG) between 2006 and 2009. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Bichat Hospital in 2006. All patients gave their informed written consent. This study was followed for 5 years with the grant of the French Ministry of Health and this study will be extended for 20 years by French Society of Rheumatology (SFR). On an annual basis for a duration of 20 years, a thorough standardized paper case report form (CRF) was filled prospectively by clinicians.
The aim of this study is to conduct survey-based assessments for the safety of air travel in patients with Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome (BHD). The study will enroll patients through the clinic network at Rare Lung Disease Consortium (RLDC) and through the BHD foundation website. Patients will have access to the questionnaire via REDCap (an online data management system) and each patient will be provided with a link to complete the survey. The investigators plan on enrolling approximately 100 patients with BHD for the purpose of this study. Secondary aims of this study include further characterization of the clinical aspects of disease and to establish a contact registry for these patients, in order to facilitate future studies.
