The Use of Mentoring to Promote Well-being for Female SMART Members

Women are highly underrepresented in the construction skilled trades. In addition to facing the industry's well-known physical risks, women are subjected to discrimination, harassment, and skills under-utilization. As a result, tradeswomen have increased risk for injury, stress-related health effects, and high attrition rates from apprenticeship programs, thus perpetuating their minority status. Mentoring is a well-established technique for learning technical and personal navigation skills in new or challenging social environments. The investigators propose development and dissemination of a mentorship program through local unions of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART), and evaluating its success in reducing women's injury and work stress, while improving retention.

Stress Management in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease

Introduction: Stress can cause hemodynamic and metabolic changes that contribute to endothelial dysfunction and there is a significant association between high stress and cardiovascular events. Objective: To evaluate the influence of stress management on endothelial function in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods: Randomized, controlled, parallel, intention-to-treat clinical trial. Will be considered eligible patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention and who have high stress (above average for the Brazilian population) in the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10). Patients will be evaluated on PCI admission and stress management with cognitive behavioral techniques will be implemented one month after hospital discharge in the intervention group. Group sessions will be held between 6-9 people. There will be 4 1-hour meetings for 8 weeks. The primary outcome will be the difference in the variation of brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) between the groups and at 3 months of baseline evaluation and at 6-month follow-up after the intervention and the secondary outcome will be the difference in the variation of the velocity of brachial artery. Pulse wave evaluated at the same time periods as DMF. Outcomes will be evaluated by Generalized Estimation Equations (GEE). Expected Results: In patients undergoing high-stress percutaneous coronary intervention, the use of cognitive behavioral techniques for stress management will improve endothelial function and vascular stiffness.

Combined Effects of Prolonged Sitting and Mental Stress on the Cardiovascular System

Prolonged sitting may pose a public health risk through its effects on the cardiovascular system, and may lead to impaired whole-body cardiovascular health, which includes both vascular and cerebrovascular function. These effects may interact with other environmental variables, such as stress. However, no study has investigated the combined effect of a mental stressor and prolonged sitting on vascular and cerebrovascular function. The combined effect of prolonged sitting and mental stress may lead to an exacerbated effect on vascular, cerebrovascular, and executive function. The investigators hypothesize that mental stress with the addition of prolonged sitting [PS] will result in a greater increase in peripheral, central and cerebral arterial stiffness and elicit a decrease in cerebral perfusion, total blood flow to the brain, middle cerebral artery velocity and executive function, compared to mental stress without prolonged sitting [CON]. The findings from this study may result in a public health message regarding sedentary behavior and stress, and will help elucidate the mechanisms behind acute vascular, cerebrovascular, and cognitive dysfunction during prolonged sitting.

When a parent with minor children falls ill with cancer, it is extremely stressful for all of the family members, including the partner and children. Familiar everyday routines are often disrupted even at an early stage, and for a prolonged period. Financial difficulties, the threat represented by the uncertain course of the disease, and worries about the children's future have a cumulative effect. The affected families are thereby pushed to their limits organizationally and emotionally. The burden involved tends to be underestimated, and secondary psychological conditions often develop among all the family members. They often do not have adequate access to support. The aim of this project is to establish a care management system that provides support for families with underage children in which one parent is seriously ill. In order to reduce the burden on families, "family SCOUTS" are to be used who can provide advice and information at an early stage. They are intended to encourage families to discuss things openly, and they should also facilitate access to all the support services available. The project will evaluate whether the use of family SCOUTS reduces the burden on the family in comparison with families who do not have a family SCOUT. For this purpose, investigations will be carried out before and after the family SCOUTS are deployed. Standardized questionnaires, interviews, and routine data from the participating health-insurance companies will provide the basic data.

The Effects of a Life Coaching Seminar on Gratitude and Psychological Well-Being

This study will consist of a randomized experimental group and a control group, In addition to the control and experimental group, there will also be a non-randomized motivated experimental group. Approximately 75 males and females from the ages of 18 to 80 will take part in this study. Subjects will be randomly divided into a Control and Experimental Group. Subjects for the control and experimental group will be recruited from a Tony Robbins Facebook page, and subjects in the experimental group (DWD Group) will be admitted to the Tony Robbins Date With Destiny Event (December 2019) in West Palm Beach for free, while the subjects randomly assigned to the control group, will not attend the event, but instead be required to a Gratitude Journaling experiment (Three Good Things Intervention). Psychological assessment surveys will be taken before the event, directly after the event, and one month following the event. The control group will take the psychological assessment before beginning journaling, directly after completing journaling, and one month following completion of journaling.

Wellbeing and Stress Among Mobile Phone Dispatched Lay Responders

The aim of this study is to provide detailed information on state of mind, psychological wellbeing and stress for lay responders dispatched to suspected OHCA via a mobile phone application. The Heartunner system is a mobile phone positioning system for dispatch of CPR-trained lay volunteers to nearby suspected out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs). After downloading of a mobile phone application (The Heartrunner application), and given consent of participation, the lay responders are dispatched to nearby suspected OHCA. The lay responders are either dispatched directly to the scene of the suspected OHCA to perform CPR, or to fetch the nearest AED. The location of the OHCA and available AEDs are displayed on a map, facilitated by the Heartrunner application. The Heartrunner system is studied through "The SAMBA-trial" on clinical outcomes for OHCA patients (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02992873). The psychological effects among the lay responders will be evaluated with an online survey adjacent to dispatch and after 4-6 weeks. The results of the survey will be compared both intra-individual, and to a control group of not dispatched lay responders within the Heartrunner system. Descriptive statistics regarding interventions, age, gender and former experience will also be presented.

A Training Program for Developing Social- and Personal Resources

In this study, a new psychosocial training for social relationships for adults will be evaluated. In a 6-module course, with four 3-day modules and two 5-day modules in the timeframe of one year, participants learn ways to strengthen their personal resources to establish effective social relationships and to develop skills as a social being. In between the module courses, the participants take 5 single sessions with an instructed trainer and document 10 conversations/social situations where they successfully apply the acquired personal and social skills. For my study, I will recruit a total of 200 persons. Approx. one hundred participants for the intervention group and 100 individuals for the control group. During the course of the training, the participants are taught social and personal skills that should result in a lower perceived stress level in daily life, improved health behaviour, a decreased presence of common somatic symptoms, a higher satisfaction with their lives, improved quality of their social relationships and a higher wellbeing. Data from study participants having accomplished additional training programs with the same training provider will be used to evaluate the influence on the results compared to participants without the extra addition for this study. The training participants will be assessed together with the controls. All study participants will be evaluated with standardized online questionnaires.
