How Differences in Oximeter Performance May Affect Clinical Decision

In clinical practice discrepancies between overnight SpO2 recordings performed by 2 devices used simultaneously are regularly observed. However, this has not been systematically studied or quantified. It is therefore important to determine if these discrepancies are anecdotic, or frequent, and to what extent this may affect decisions in clinical practice such as implementing (or withdrawing) oxygen in subjects under noninvasive ventilation (NIV) or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), or adjusting NIV settings.

Mediterranean-type Diet for Older Adults With Obstructive Sleep Apnea

The majority of the elderly present with sleep apnea and mortality is significantly higher in this group. Sleep apnea runs the risk of developing diseases, especially hypertension and cardiovascular disease, while the Mediterranean diet is associated with reduced risk. No study evaluated the effect of the Mediterranean diet on the apnea and hypopnea index in the elderly. Therefore, the present work intends to evaluate the effect of the intervention with the Mediterranean diet on the apnea-hypopnea index in the elderly with moderate sleep apnea. The hypothesis study is that the elderly with moderately severe sleep apnea under a Mediterranean-type diet will modify AHI in the short term, regardless of weight change, due to changes in body volume and ingestion, especially those related to body water.

Examining the Association Between Physical Activity and Sleep Quality in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder

This study aims to investigate whether physical activity intervention would be effective to improve sleep quality in children with ASD, and investigate how physical activity impacts on sleep in children with ASD through melatonin-mediated mechanism model. A parallel-group randomized controlled trial comparing a 12-week jogging intervention and a control group receiving standard care in 32 children with ASD will be conducted. This study will monitor the changes of four sleep parameters (sleep onset latency; sleep efficiency, wake after sleep onset and sleep duration) through objective actigraphic assessment and parental sleep logs.

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) during pregnancy is a modifiable risk factor for poor maternal and fetal outcomes. The investigators propose a prospective observational study to assess the utility of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) administration (intervention) during pregnancy to reduce maternal and fetal morbidity. Secondarily, we will also perform a cohort study to assess the incidence of antenatal sleep-disordered breathing as measured by ambulatory sleep monitoring applied in the hospital setting.

The objective of ESCAPE-SCD Study is assessment of the effect of sleep apnea on sudden cardiac death risk and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy. The ESCAPE - SCD Study will address following specific study questions: - Is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and/or central sleep apnea (CSA) an independent risk factor of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) indicated for ICD/CRT-D implant based on current European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Guidelines for primary prevention of sudden cardiac death? - Can treatment of predominant (>50%) obstructive sleep apnea by appropriate Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) therapy decrease risk of sudden cardiac arrhythmic death in ICM patients? - Can treatment of predominant (>50%) obstructive sleep apnea by appropriate PAP therapy improve cardiovascular outcomes in ICM patients indicated for ICD/CRT-D implant? - Does obstructive sleep apnea represent a novel factor that may improve risk stratification of sudden cardiac death and advance identification of those patients that will benefit from ICD/CRT-D therapy?

Polymorphisms in Inflammatory Cytokines Genes in Subjects With Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder. It is known to be related with increased body mass, abdominal obesity, insulin resistance and hypertension. It is currently believed to be a feature of the metabolic syndrome. Other features of the metabolic syndrome-such as insulin resistace were found related to inflammation and inflammatory cytokines. Several polymorphisms in the genes that encode interleukin 6,inteleukin 10 and TNF-alpha have significant influence on the amounts of cytokine production. we thus hypothesize that polymorphisms related to increased pruduction are more common in subjects with OSA than in matched controls
