The present project aims at evaluating the diagnostic potential of high-field MRI (3 Teslas) for joint disease. At this field, given that isotropic image resolution of 400 microns can be obtained, one could expect an early detection of joint abnormalities. The additional aim of this project will be to develop a quantitative analyse of the corresponding high-resolution images.

Local Analgesia in Knee- and Hipatroplastic Surgery in Patients With Rheumatic Disease: Extra- vs. Intracapsulare Position of Catheter

Postoperative pain is part of surgery trauma. In orthopedic surgery artroplastic replacement of knee- and hipjoints are common. Postoperative pain relieve can be complicated. A new concept for pain relieve postoperative is local infiltration analgesia (LIA). This technique implicates that a catheter is left in the surgical area and that local anestesia can be administered post surgery. The goal is no or only little pain with minimal side effects. The catheter could be placed intra- or extracapsulare. The best position is not known. Primary aim is to study if position of the catheter effects the need of other postoperative analgesia. Secondary aim is to study if the position effects patient mobility within the first two days.

Efficiency of Radiofrequency Ablation for Surgical Treatment of Chronic Atrial Fibrillation With Rheumatic Valve Disease

The purpose of this study is to determine whether concomitant radiofrequency Maze procedure for surgical treatment of chronic atrial fibrillation with rheumatic valve disease could provide better sinus rhythm control, improved cardiac hemodynamic status and decreased thromboembolism events and to compare if biatrial is better than left atrial procedure? 150 rheumatic valve patients with chronic atrial fibrillation (AF) having concomitant valve surgery were randomized to three groups: left atrial ablation group, bi-atrial ablation group, and Amiodarone group. All patients were scheduled followed up before discharge and at 3rd, 6th and 12th postoperative months. Standard 12-lead electrocardiography (ECG), 24-hour Holter and transthoracic echocardiography were used to determine the rhythm and cardiac hemodynamic status.

A Single Centre Study to Assess the Long-term Performance of the DePuy ASR™ System in Primary Hip Resurfacing Surgery

The purpose of this study is to monitor the performance and determine the metal ion release of the DePuy ASR™ System in the treatment of patients with hip joint disease requiring hip resurfacing surgery. Patients who enter the study will be evaluated at regular intervals following hip surgery using patient, clinical and x-ray assessments. A subset of patients will also have blood samples taken at regular intervals to allow the metal ion levels to be determined and undergo scans to allow the bone mineral density of the bone surrounding the implant to be monitored. DePuy decided to close this Study in 4Q 2009. The Study was terminated with effect from November 2010 to allow for the completion of the 5 year follow up assessments. Please note that subsequent to this decision DePuy voluntarily recalled the ASR products on 24 August 2010. The purpose of this study is to monitor the performance of a large metal-on-metal bearing from the DePuy ASR™ System in the treatment of patients with hip joint disease requiring hip resurfacing surgery or a total hip replacement. Patients who enter the study will be evaluated at regular intervals following hip surgery using patient, clinical and x-ray assessments. The Study was terminated with effect from 30th November 2011 following the completion of 2 year follow up assessments for those patients remaining in the study. Please note that prior to this decision DePuy voluntarily recalled the ASR products on 24 August 2010.
