Filter by:Dental caries (tooth decay) is the most prevalent childhood disease in the world. Multiple interventions are available to treat and prevent caries. The aim of the proposed study is to compare the benefit of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and fluoride varnish versus fluoride varnish and glass ionomer sealants. This study is a five-year, cluster randomized, pragmatic controlled trial conducted in public elementary schools in New York City.
With the nation's fastest growing demographic being adults over 65, one in every three seniors is estimated to die from Alzheimer's Disease (AD). The strong correlation between AD and age, combined with the exponential growth of this demographic, highlights the need for non-pharmaceutical treatment/prevention strategies. Research has established a relationship between moderate to vigorous physical activity (PA) and improved cognitive functioning. However, there is insufficient evidence to support this relationship at the lower end of the PA spectrum. Assisted living facilities (ALF) are an easy target for reducing SB, as many individuals in these facilities have various functional limitations and therefore cannot meet the recommended PA guidelines. Older adults are also the most sedentary population, with results showing over 8.5+ hours daily spent in SB. ALF typically provide meals, laundry services as well as housekeeping duties, leaving the residents very susceptible to large amounts of SB. The primary purpose of my study is investigating how reducing sedentary behaviour (SB) in ALF will affect Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive scores among older adults aged 65 and older with mild-to-moderate cognitive impairment. I will also investigate its effects on physical functioning with the Timed Up and Go test (TUG) and quality of life with the Short Form 36 (SF-36) Health Survey. Participants will be prompted to take a 10-minute light intensity PA break at three different time points throughout the day, reallocating SB to any task equating to over 1.5 metabolic equivalents. Positive findings may encourage ALF to implement policies and procedures regarding SB.
Fatigue due to cancer and its treatment (for example, radiation therapy) can interfere with quality of life and can linger long after treatment has ended, yet research examining preventative approaches has produced limited clinical benefit. The proposed study will provide information about systematic light exposure for the prevention of fatigue in prostate cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy and will investigate how it works. This study would facilitate the development of this potential preventative treatment, giving health care providers and cancer survivors a much-needed tool to help with cancer-related fatigue.
This study will test the effectiveness of an intervention for Veterans diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and the burden on their informal (family/friend) caregiver.
End stage renal disease (ESRD) affects approximately 700,000 Americans of which approximately 400,000 are on life-saving hemodialysis therapy. Hemodialysis can take a physical and emotional toll on patients, and most patients on hemodialysis describe poor quality of life. Patients on hemodialysis have worse health related quality of life (HrQOL) than patients with any other chronic illness including cancer and congestive heart failure. This poor quality of life can affect how well these patients manage their own health or their self-care, and can ultimately lead to poor health outcomes. Despite this, there are no commonly used programs to improve quality of life or self-care for patients on hemodialysis. The investigators have developed a simple 3-step program to improve quality of life and self-care for patients on hemodialysis. The first step involves presenting quality of life scores to the dialysis health care team so that a program can be designed. The second step involves 8-12 education sessions combined with behavioral training designed to improve quality of life and self-care. The final step is monthly re-evaluation of progress. In this study, the investigators will test this 3-step program, compared to dialysis education alone, to see if it improves quality of life and self-care. By improving quality of life and self-care the investigators believe patient outcomes including hospitalizations will improve.
Assess the impact of the systematic use of STOPP/START tool during medication conciliation on the evolution of hospitalised elderly people's quality of life at 2 months.
The present randomized study is designed to compare the quality of life between the patients undergoing laparoscopy-assisted and totally laparoscopic distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer, and therefore to evaluate the superiority of totally laparoscopic distal gastrectomy to laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy.
This study will examine whether an Internet-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) intervention is effective, firstly, on reducing depressive symptoms, and, secondly, on improving well-being of elderly family caregivers. In our study, we will compare 1) the experimental Internet-based ACT group to 2) standardized institutional rehabilitation carried out in rehabilitation centers and to 3) support provided by voluntary family caregiver associations
The aim of the study was to evaluate the short- and long-term effects of spa therapy on quality of life and pain in patients aged 65 years and older with osteoarthritis. 70 patients with osteoarthritis referred to spa treatment in south-eastern Poland were enrolled in the study. Spa treatment lasted 3 weeks. All the patients benefited from spa therapy. VAS pain scale, the Laitinen scale and WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire were used to assess the condition of the patients. The examinations were performed three times: at the beginning of the spa treatment, after three months and one year after the first examinations.
The study aimed to investigate whether transcranial direct current stimulation could modify auditory hallucination, insight, neurocognitive function, heart rate variability, psychosocial functioning and quality of life in patients with schizophrenia.
