Filter by:The First 1000 Days (conception to age 2) is a crucial period for the development and prevention of obesity and its adverse consequences in mother-child pairs and their families. The overall aim of the First 1000 Days program is to work across early-life systems to prevent obesity, promote healthy routines and behaviors, address social determinants of health, and reduce health disparities among vulnerable children and families at community health centers in the Boston, MA area. The study aims to simultaneously implement and evaluate an obesity prevention program across early life systems to reduce the prevalence of obesity risk factors within racial/ethnic minority families, close the gap in maternal-child health disparities, and assess and address social determinants of health.
The aim of the Cork and Kerry Study Phase II (Mitchelstown cohort recruited 2010-11) is to provide an updated profile of glucose tolerance status, cardiovascular health and their related factors in an Irish adult general population sample and to compare the findings with those obtained during baseline assessment of Phase I of the Cork and Kerry study (1998) and the rescreen (2008).
This study aims to investigate the effect of a mobile community based on a smart phone application to enhance physical activities of breast cancer survivors.
BOKS, Build Our Kids' Success, is a before-school physical activity program that has been implemented in over 2,000 elementary and middle schools. Students participate in the program for 12 weeks, two or three mornings per week for about 1 hour per session. This study if a non-randomized control trial seeking to 1) examine the extent to which participation in the before-school BOKS program improves, health, well-being, and performance, and 2) compare the results of a two-day-per-week versus a three-day-per-week program.
Background: Youth from low-income and minority families are disproportionately affected by obesity and its complications. This study presented pilot work to develop and implement a multi-component physical activity and healthy eating intervention at a Boys & Girls Club (BGC) after school program. Methods: Using a community-based participatory approach, BGC staff and academic researchers developed intervention components informed by formative studies and based on a social ecological theory framework. Components included healthy eating and physical activity policy implementation, staff training, a challenge/self-monitoring program for healthy behaviors, a peer-coaching program for healthy behaviors, and a social marketing campaign. Preliminary intervention efficacy was assessed through a single group, pre-post study design with measured collected at baseline and 6 months.
Physical inactivity in children is a major public health risk factor and a health objective for the nation. This study aims to investigate the short- and long-term effects of a movement and physical activity program - the Children Health and Motor Programs (CHAMP) on motor competence, perceived motor competence, and physical activity. A secondary aim of this project (i.e., Science of Behavior Change Administrative Supplement) is to examine the immediate (pre- to post-test) effects of the CHAMP intervention on self-regulation and associations between self-regulation and changes in motor competence, perceived motor competence, and physical activity. The long term goal is to provide evidence-based movement experiences during the early childhood years that promote and contribute to overall healthy growth and development.
Much has been learned about the efficacy and effectiveness of comprehensive healthy lifestyle interventions to reduce obesity. Few studies have been translated into rural settings or among Latinos. Y Living is an evidence-based family-focused intervention (FI) designed for urban Latino families. The FI is a 12-week behavioral modification program grounded in social cognitive theory, designed to engage the whole family in lifestyle changes by developing knowledge and skills in physical activity and healthy eating, building skills in goal-setting and self-monitoring, and creating a supportive home environment. Researchers will engage community partners in formative research to adapt the current FI for rural Latino families. Two parallel delivery methods of the FI will be developed and tested: 1) in-person group setting at a community center (FI-IP) and 2) home-based delivered remotely with technology (FI-RT). Both will be designed to address the unique social, cultural and environmental factors facing rural Latino families. The FI-RT will take advantage of innovative modern technology and e-Learning to increase program availability, accessibility and participation in rural settings. Researchers will conduct a 3-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) to compare effectiveness of the two delivery approaches on weight loss (primary outcome) and energy balance behaviors (secondary outcomes) among obese Latino parent-child pairs versus control. The researchers will recruit 270 obese Latino adults (ages 21-65) with a child (ages 8-17) from three primary care practices in rural South Texas. These parent-child pairs will be randomized to one of three arms stratified by clinic: 1) FI-IP (n=90); 2) FI-RT (n=90); or 3) control group (n=90). Primary specific aims are to: 1) Conduct community-engaged formative studies to transform the existing FI into two unique delivery methods (FI-IP and FI-RT) for use in a subsequent RCT in a rural Latino community; and 2) Conduct a RCT to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of FI-IP and FI-RT to address weight loss (primary outcome) and energy balance behaviors (secondary outcomes) among obese rural Latino adults compared with adult participants in control group at immediate post intervention (3 months), after a 3-month maintenance program (6 months post randomization) and a 6-month follow-up (12 months post randomization). A secondary aim is to examine the impact of FI-IP and FI-RT children's weight and energy balance behaviors.
Introduction. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common neurological disease causing disability in young adults. Neurorehabilitation is a fundamental aspect in the treatment approach for MS, in which new technologies have gained popularity, especially the use of virtual reality (VR), thanks to the therapeutic possibilities offered for patients with MS presenting cognitive, sensitive and motor dysfunctions. Aim. To analyze and compare an occupational therapy intervention (OT) compared with OT + VR (OT+VR) on the manual dexterity of patients with MS. Material and methods. 26 patients will be recruited. The control group (n=8) will recieve 20 conventional OT sessions distributed in two sessions per week. The experimental group OT+VR (n=8) will recieve 20 sessions of VR interventions, twice weekly and lasting 30 minutes, consisting of VR games accessed via the online webpage motiongamingconsole.com, including Flip Out, Air Hockey, Partículas, Dunkit, Cuenta peces and Robo Maro, in addition to the conventional OT sessions. Pre and post-intervention assessments will be based on the Purdue Pegboard Test, the Jebsen Taylor Hand Function Test and the Grooved Pegboard Test.
Despite knowing that exercise improves health, primary care providers (PCPs) do not regularly assess physical activity (PA) levels or use proven techniques to help patients to increase their PA levels. Studies have shown that PCPs don't talk to patients about their PA levels because they don't feel they have adequate knowledge or resources to help their patients. Additionally they don't feel they have time to provide personalized advice regarding PA. This study will use tablet computers and email to engage patients in contemplating their own PA levels and starting conversations with their PCPs. Electronic surveys delivered via tablets and email prior to periodic health reviews will be used to support customized, patient-centred health care. The patient's survey responses will be used to develop a printable 'toolkit' with individualized PA recommendations, a personalized exercise prescription (Rx), as well as patient-specific educational and community resources. The exercise Rx and resources can be edited by the PCP based on the resulting discussion between patient and PCP. The overarching aim of this study is to determine how the use of technology in family doctors' offices can help patients to engage with their PCPs regarding PA and ultimately increase their PA levels.
The purpose of this study is to examine the efficacy of tDCS (transcranial direct current stimulation) for increasing exercise adherence among low active individuals with elevated depressive symptoms. The investigators expect that this project will contribute much needed knowledge about the role that tDCS can play in changing the affective experience of exercise.
