Filter by:The primary aim of the study is to evaluate the physical activity level in patients with asthma. The secondary aims of the study are assesment of maximal and functional exercise capacity, respiratory functions, respiratory muscle strength and endurance, peripheral muscle strength, depression and anxiety levels, disease specific and respiratory quality of life, sleep and coughing associated quality of life, asthma self-management knowledge level and fatigue severity in patients with asthma.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of adding a team competition comprised of members of existing social networks to a technology-delivered program for enhancing physical activity among insufficiently active adults.
Objective: To evaluate the effects of an early-based cardiac rehabilitation program on the functional capacity, inspiratory muscular strength and clinical outcomes in hospitalized heart failure patients before and after heart transplantation. Method: 30 hospitalized heart failure patients awaiting cardiac transplantation will be selected and randomized in 2 groups: conventional group (n = 15) - conventional exercise protocol: breathing exercises and global active exercises of upper and lower limbs in the sitting position; and Intervention group (n = 15) - cycle ergometer exercise protocol: each session consists of cycling on a stationary bicycle in the seated position for 20 minutes. In both groups, the exercise protocols will be applied twice a day until the hospital discharge, always supervised by a physiotherapist and a doctor. The evaluation procedures in all patients of the research will be: functional capacity measured by the 6 minute walk test and inspiratory muscle strength measured by manovacuometry. Evaluations will be repeated in 3 distinct moments: after 24h of hospital admission and/or clinical stabilization; before transplantation and after transplantation in hospital discharge.
Background. There is a growing demand for long-term care settings. Care-home residents are a vulnerable group with high levels of physical dependency and cognitive impairment. Long-term care facilities' policy need to adapt and offer more effective and sustainable interventions to address their complex physical and mental health needs. Despite the increasing emphasis on patient and public involvement, marginalised groups such as care-home residents, can be overlooked when including people in the research process. The GET READY project aims to integrate service-learning methodology into Physical Therapy and Sport Sciences University degrees by offering students individual service opportunities (placements) with residential care homes, in order to co-create the best suited intervention with researchers, older adults of both genders (end-users) in care homes, health professionals, caregivers, family members and policy makers. Methods. Stage 1 will integrate a service-learning methodology within a Physical Therapy module in Glasgow and Sport Sciences module in Barcelona, design two workshops for care home residents and conduct a co-creation protocol. Stage 2 will assess the intervention feasibility, safety and preliminary effects of the co-created intervention in a group of 33 care home residents, within a two-armed pragmatic randomized clinical trial.
This is a randomized control trial aiming to investigate the use of a prehabilitation regimen for patients undergoing major GI cancer surgery and its effects on measurements of HRQOL, LOS, and post-operative complications. Participants will be randomized to either the Prehabilitation arm or the Usual Care arm (control group). The Prehabilitation arm will be prescribed both physical and psychological prehabilitation prior to undergoing surgery for their GI cancer. The Usual Care arm will be counseled to continue their current level of activity and given the information on exercise as outlined in the Cancer Care Ontario guidelines. Participants in the Usual Care arm will also be given the same activity tracker as patients in the Prehabilitation arm in order to eliminate the activity tracker as an intervention itself. Clinical, patient-reported outcomes and health system outcomes will be evaluated. Outcomes will be measured at consent (baseline), immediately preoperatively, and postoperatively at 1, 3 and 6 months. The investigators will collect measures of recruitment, attrition and self-reported compliance via a log completed by the coordinator during weekly patient phone calls.
This randomized intervention is designed to compare the influence of physical activity in natural and urban environments on cognitive and physical health. Half of the participants will participate in a six-week physical activity class based in a natural environment, and half of the participants will participate in a six-week physical activity class based in an indoor environment. The investigators hypothesize the nature-based intervention will produce lower cognitive fatigue (measured using neurophysiological measurements), better cognitive performance (measured using cognitive assessments), and increased physical fitness (measuring using fitness testing).
Objective: The aim of the first part of this study with two stages is to determine prevalence of CVD risk and the associated variables in individuals aged 40-65 years registered in a Family Health Center (FHC) in city center of Antalya; the aim of the second one is to evaluate the effect of intervention to increase physical activity in individuals with moderate risk of CVD on decreasing the risk level. Methods: Stage 1 and Stage 2 were conducted as cross-sectional and Randomized Controlled Experimental Trial, respectively. In the first stage the CVD risk level was calculated using the HeartScore. In the second stage, 11 individuals with moderate CVD risk (2-<5%) found in the intervention group participated into a 12-week physical activity program (a moderate walk outdoor, with group 5 days in a week, each lasting for 40 minutes) guided by nurse. CVD brochure and physical activity guide was distributed to 11 individuals in control group within the scope of routine practice of FHCs.
This study will examine whether 10-minute bouts of cycling at various intensities will impact executive functioning (i.e., cognitive ability) as assessed by the antisaccade (AS) task through a total of five visits. An antisaccade is a rapid eye movement away from a visual target. The ability to suppress making an eye movement towards a visual target gauges inhibitory control (i.e., a domain of executive functioning). In the initial visit, participants' exercise capacity will be assessed through a maximal effort cycling test. Intensities for the cycling bouts (i.e., high, moderate, low) in subsequent sessions will be based upon this maximal effort cycling test. In visits 2 through 5, participants will complete an AS task, followed by a 10-minute bout of cycling, and then complete the AS task again. The order of cycling intensities will be randomized between participants. Differences in the AS task (i.e., reaction time and accuracy) will be compared between and within cycling conditions.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether patients are able to participate in a so called prehabilitation program (prior to the beginning of cancer treatment) which includes (1) a supervised and home-based exercise program plus one educational session or (2) just home-based exercise plus one educational session or (3) just one educational session. Breast cancer surgery may have potential for several side effects, including functional (e.g. flexibility in the affected arm, lymphedema [swelling that generally occurs in the arms or legs that occurs as a result of the removal of or damage to lymph nodes as a part of cancer treatment], shoulder pain) and psychosocial (e.g. reduced quality of life, increased fatigue) aspects. Evidence shows that exercise is considered to be an effective treatment approach in breast cancer patients during and after treatment with regard to the above mentioned side-effects. Also, prehabilitative exercise in colon and lung cancer patients was shown as feasible and effective. However, no experience exits with regard to prehabilitation exercise in breast cancer patients.
Our research hypothesis is that the practice of walking on a secure treadmill is possible at home and allows the patient to increase the training work of walking in everyday life compared to a conventional care.
