The Impact of Food Advertisements on Brain Response and Eating Behavior in Children

The purpose of this project is to examine the impact that television food advertisements have on brain responses and eating behavior in children. Food advertisements enhance children's liking and intake of foods that tend to be high in energy content and low in nutritional value. Although several studies have measured the differences in children's food intake after watching advertisements, none have shown the brain mechanisms associated with this change in behavior. In order to clarify the relationship between food advertising and eating behavior, the investigators have assembled a team with expertise in functional imaging, eating behaviors, and clinical pediatric research. First, the investigators will observe the differences in children's eating behaviors after being exposed to food commercials or non-food commercials. Second, the investigators will measure the difference in child brain response to high and low energy foods after being exposed to food commercials or non-food commercials. These data will allow us to identify which areas of the brain are specifically affected by exposure to food commercials and correlate activity in these areas with children's measured food intake in the laboratory. Children ages 7-9 will participate in this 5-visit study which will be completed over the course of 12 months. Understanding how food advertisements impact children's brain responses and subsequent eating behaviors will have implications for understanding why some children respond differently to these cues than others. These outcomes may also inform the development of more effective programs and policies to prevent childhood obesity.

Play as a Method to Reduce Overweight and Obesity in Children.

Introduction Overweight and obesity are characterised by excess fat, which results in weight gain and is identified by the Body Mass Index (BMI). Studies show that overweight and obesity are the result of a complex interaction between genetic and environmental factors, which begins prenatally. Various studies have shown that physical exercise is an important component of weight loss programmes and that it also benefits the metabolic profile. Other authors have reported that greater weight loss is achieved by a programme that includes both diet and exercise, rather than either of these alone. Aim The aim of this study is to analyse an intervention based on play as a means of improving the body composition of children with overweight or obesity. Design / Method The design of the Kids-Play study is based on cases and controls. The study was conducted in Granada (Spain) The analysis sample of 98 children was divided into two groups: cases, consisting of 49 children, who participated in an intervention programme based on physical activity, play and nutritional advice (to both the child and the parents); and controls, another 49 children, who received only nutritional advice.

A 12 month long program focused on making good food choices and exercise directed at 8-12 year olds and their caregivers. The program will consist of monthly educational meetings each teaching a new nutritional and exercise concept. Children will be given weekly exercise schedules and their adherence to the program will be assessed. The study will culminate with an annual children's race in May.

Families on Track: A Digital Health Behavioral Intervention for Parents Seeking Treatment for Their Child With Obesity

Current models of outpatient childhood obesity treatment focus on the child's health habits, with limited efficacy. In part, this may be because childhood obesity is highly sensitive to parental lifestyle habits, who are often not a direct target of child obesity interventions. This study aims to target weight loss among overweight parents of 2-16 year old children with obesity enrolled in the Duke Healthy Lifestyles Program (HL) in order to augment child body mass index reduction. The intervention, " Families on Track" is a digital health intervention platform using the Interactive Obesity Treatment Approach (iOTA).

Neural Mechanisms Underlying Children's Responses to Food Portion Size and Energy Density

Increased portion sizes of foods high in energy density (calories per gram of food) have been implicated in the obesity epidemic. Numerous studies show that children and adults eat more from larger portions of food than they do from smaller portions, a response known as the portion size effect. Despite the robust and consistent nature of these findings, the mechanisms underlying the portion size effect are not known. The long-term goal of this research is to identify the neural mechanisms involved in the portion size effect so that this information can be used to develop effective weight-management strategies. Differences in neural response to food cues, as demonstrated by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), can help clarify the factors that determine susceptibility to large portions. The goal of this study is to identify brain regions activated in response to portion size and energy density and relate these neural responses to laboratory eating behaviors in children. The investigators hypothesize that high relative to low energy density food images will be associated with increased activation in regions of the brain involved in reward- and sensory- processing and that large relative to small portion size food images will be associated with increased activation in regions of the brain involved in cognitive control. In addition, the investigators hypothesize that these brain responses will influence the relationship between portion size served and energy intake at laboratory meals.
