Decision-Making and the Relationship to Food Intake in Kids

The purpose of this 18-month project is to investigate how decision-making influences food choice and consumption in children ages 7 to 11 years old. Although several studies suggest that the ability to make good decisions relates to eating behaviors, no studies have looked at how food reward influences the decision-making process to impact actual food intake. This proposal will answer these questions and bridge this gap in knowledge, which could lead to the development of more effective interventions for childhood obesity. To accomplish this, the investigators have assembled a diverse team with expertise in food intake, nutrition, and decision sciences. First, the investigators will establish if there are differences in decision-making between children varying in weight status. Second, the investigators will determine if performance on behavioral decision-making tasks relates to food consumption in the laboratory. Third, the investigators will examine response functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) response to various rewards (i.e. food and money) and determine if this is influenced by child weight status. Fourth, the investigators will examine differences in fMRI BOLD at rest in decision-making regions are correlated with food intake and weight status. Eighty-two children will participate in our study. The long-term goal of this project is to investigate if there are differences in brain regions corresponding to these behaviors in overweight children and if these differences relate to eating behaviors in this population. Children will undergo fMRI while playing a reward task as well as consume meals in our laboratory. Decision-making will also be assessed by having children complete various behavioral measurements of reward and inhibitory control.

The Impact of an Acute Bout of Exercise on Children's Eating Behaviors

The purpose of this project is to examine the effects of an acute bout of exercise on children's energy intake over the course of a day. Previous studies in adolescents and adults have shown exercise to be effective in decreasing short-term energy intake, with some variability. Individual characteristics such as habitual physical activity and psychological factors may influence the effect of exercise on energy intake, but these factors have yet to be examined. The investigators have assembled a multi-disciplinary team of researchers, with expertise in eating behavior, exercise, psychology, and clinical research in order to examine these questions. First, the investigators will examine the difference in energy intake at lunch, snack, and dinner meals in response to 30 minutes of imposed exercise compared to 30 minutes of rest. Second, the investigators will collect objective measures of children's habitual physical activity, child characteristics (body composition, eating behavior traits), and individual responses to the controlled exercise bout. The investigators can then examine both group and individual differences in the energy intake response to exercise. Children (ages 9-12) will be tested over the course of three visits. The key outcome will be differences in energy intake in response to exercise vs. rest. Secondary outcomes include the influence of differences in habitual physical activity, personal characteristics, and responses to the exercise bout on children's energy intake. The long term goal of this line of research is to understand the mechanisms behind the interaction between exercise and energy intake. The translational potential of this research will be to inform personalized childhood obesity prevention strategies in children at risk for overweight.

Active Class Space Metabolic Benefits Study

ACS examined the potential influence of intermittent physical activity breaks of various intensities (control, light, moderate, vigorous) on measures of immediate mental performance, mood, hunger and several metabolic outcomes in children aged 7-11 years. We build upon previous work to hypothesize that higher-intensity intermittent physical activity breaks throughout an 8-hour day will improve immediate mental performance, mood, and post-exercise physical activity levels, while reducing hunger and post-exercise food intake.

Those patients who are no longer able to exercize because of their physical condition start an effort rehabilitation program at the Organization. The study will evaluate the impact of this rehabilitation program on quality of life and appetency to physical activity for these children and teens.

Healthy Families: Transforming Care for Obese Children at NYU Lutheran Family Health Centers

Childhood obesity is a contributing factor to health complications such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and asthma. It is of particular concern among Hispanic populations in the United States as that group has the fastest growing childhood obesity rate. Nearly two in five Hispanic children ages 2 to 19 are overweight or obese. This program aims to test whether it is beneficial to routinize a multi-disciplinary pediatric weight management program within the highest volume clinic (NYU-LFHC Women, Adolescents and Children), and to add a home-visit component to reinforce teaching on food selection and preparation. The intervention will include 27-hour intervention session which will be distributed into 12-session series over a 3 month period. The program will target Hispanic children between the ages of 9 and 11 with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between the 95th and 99th percentiles. To assess the effectiveness of this program, the investigators propose to conduct a general prospective study using randomized pre-test and post-test control group design with minimal risk for participants.
