Correlation Between Body Weight and Foot Progression Angle in Adolescents

Obesity is associated with functional decline , altered spatiotemporal gait parameters (e.g. lower gait speed, shorter strides, and increased step width), and a significantly higher metabolic cost of walking compared to people with normal body weight. Obesity also negatively affects balance control.This study will investigate foot progression angle in adolescents related to their weight and category classification based on the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) growth charts.

Prevalence of Obesity and Overweight in Primary School Children in the Rhein-Neckar Region in Germany

The study will determine the weight status in primary school children in the Rhein-Neckar Region in Germany and will analyse the development of height and weight in these children during the time of COVID-19 related restrictions by asking parents to provide data from childhood examinations. Additionally, interactions between cognitive abilities and weight-status will be studied.

Resilience to the Effects of Advertising in Children

Strong empirical evidence shows food marketing promotes excess energy intake and obesity. Yet, not all children are susceptible to its effects and this variability is poorly understood. Identifying sources of this variability is a public health priority not only because it may elucidate characteristics of children who are most susceptible, but also because it may highlight novel sources of resiliency to overconsumption. The proposed research will use state-of-the art, data-driven approaches to identify neural, cognitive and behavioral phenotypes associated with resiliency to food-cue (i.e. food advertisement) induced overeating and determine whether these phenotypes protect children from weight gain during the critical pre-adolescent period.

Adaptive Implementation to Optimize Delivery of Obesity Prevention Practices in Early Care and Education Settings

"Together, We Inspire Smart Eating" (WISE) is an intervention that improves children's diets in ECE. WISE includes 4 key evidence-based practices (EBPs): (1) hands-on exposures to fruits and vegetables, (2) role modeling by educators, (3) positive feeding practices, and (4) a mascot associated with fruits and vegetables. Standard implementation approaches to WISE result in suboptimal implementation of WISE EBPs. Additional implementation strategies are needed to increase adoption and fidelity to EBPs. To date, most studies have employed an "all-or-nothing" approach, comparing multifaceted strategies to control groups without implementation support. Thus, there is an urgent need for optimized strategies that tailor implementation support intensity to the unique challenges and limited resources of the ECE context. The overall objectives of this application are to determine the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of an adaptive implementation approach to improve adoption of the EBPs of WISE while also examining implementation mechanisms. The central hypothesis is that the addition of high-intensity strategies at sites that do not respond to low-intensity strategies will improve implementation and health outcomes.

Childhood Obesity Treatment Designed for Low Income and Hispanic Families

This study is a type-1 hybrid effectiveness-implementation RCT comparing a novel family-inclusive childhood obesity treatment program, the "Healthy Living Program" (HeLP), to a protocol that enhances usual primary care to deliver Recommended Treatment of Obesity in Primary Care (RTOP). Children with obesity and their families will be referred to the study by primary care providers and randomized to HeLP or RTOP. The clinical setting is a practice-based research network serving majority Hispanic and Medicaid-insured populations. The intensive phase and booster sessions of HeLP will take place at recreation centers located near the clinics and will be led by health educators employed by the clinics. Visits with primary care providers (PCPs) for HeLP maintenance or RTOP will occur at the clinics.

Reducing Maternal Stress to Improve Obesity-related Parenting Practices

Maternal stress is associated with children's risk for obesity controlling for socioeconomic status. The association between maternal stress and child obesity is particularly strong in Latinx families, whose children also have the highest rates of obesity in the United States. A mindful parenting program might reduce Latina mothers' psychological stress and lead to improved parenting practices and ability to create a healthier environment. The primary objective of the proposed research is to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a culturally-relevant intervention that integrates mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindful parenting in Latina mothers. The investigators will conduct a randomized clinical trial comparing the Calma, Conversa, y Cría (CCC) intervention to an active control condition in 50 Latina mothers of elementary-school age children. Participant satisfaction rates and qualitative interviews will provide evidence of the program's acceptability. Feasibility will be determined by examining recruitment rates, retention rates, and treatment fidelity. Completion of this project will inform the development of a full-scale efficacy trial.

Novel Role of Exercise Timing in Obesity

The main objective of this research project is to assess the impact of the timing of exercise on sensory perception, more specifically on taste and smell. Also, the investigators want to identify the optimal exercise timing scenario that maximizes the short-term anorexigenic effect of exercise (i.e. decrease in energy intake at the meal following the exercise session) in each group of teenagers. Hypothesis: exercise immediately before a meal (EX->MEAL) will be the most efficient scenario, and will show a larger impact on males individuals and people who suffer obesity. Subsequently, the investigators want to understand the impacts of exercise on lifestyle habits (i.e. sleep and sedentariness). For the realization of this research project, the investigators plan to recruit approximately 144 participants, boys and girls with normal weight/obesity, aged 12 to 17 years. Of these participants, half will be male. There are two different exercise timings (i.e. performed at 9:30 am and 11:00 am using a treadmill to test the maximal aerobic capacity) and one sedentary control condition. Participants will take part in 3 experimental visits in a random order (~5 hours/visit at LAPS-UdeM + 24h of real-life monitoring). Appetite sensations, energy intake (i.e. total and macronutrient), activity monitoring using actigraphy, hormonal (i.e. anorexigenic and orexigenic) and chemosensory (i.e. cortical response to taste and smell stimulations) response will be monitored in the laboratory and/or remotely. This project will measure acute response in laboratory and real-life settings.
