Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor dysfunction and non-motor symptoms. Here, the investigators propose in a pilot device feasibility trial to examine whether "Bio Electro Stimulation Therapy" (B.E.S.T.) with a small, non-invasive, handheld electronic device designed to apply micro current stimulation to a person's hand can ameliorate some of the symptoms of PD.

Tailored Music Therapy for Dementia

This study evaluates the effect and process of individualized music therapy for home-dwelling persons with mild to moderate dementia. The music therapy is administered individually and includes a close caregiver. Memory of familiar music is found to be retained in persons with dementia. It is assumed to facilitate autobiographical memories and stimulate interaction with significant others. Based on time series analyses we will use statistical process control to evaluate when and how change occur.

Role of Deep Brain Stimulation on Social Cognition in Parkinsonian Patients

Parkinson's disease (PD) is usually responsible of cognitive and behavioral non-motor signs with a major impact on the quality of life. Social cognition is a complex system relying on emotion recognition (neurons mirror system, NMS), the theory of mind (with its two parts: emotional and cognitive), but also on the social and cultural environment and the personal history. The first step in this model is represented by the NMS, which seems to be altered in PD patients for both positive and negative emotions as shown in our preliminary study. The investigator purpose is to investigate the role of the treatment (levodopa and deep brain stimulation) on the functioning of the NMS.

Evaluation of Ronnie Gardiner Method in Individuals With Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease (PD) is typically associated with cognitive and movement related functional disabilities. One commonly described cognitive complaint is the ability to do several things simultaneously, defined as dual or multiple tasking. The Ronnie Gardiner Method (RGM) is a rhythm and music based rehabilitation intervention that includes components that will train this ability specifically in addition to postural control, motor learning, movement ability and general cognitive function. The aim with the present randomized controlled single-blinded trial is to evaluate the RGM with main focus on dual-task performance, compared to a control group, in individuals with PD. The control group will continue with everyday activities, including ordinary exercise activities, with no additional activity. Both groups will be evaluated pre-, post-, and after 3 months post intervention. Following outcome measures will be analyzed: 1. dual task performance (motor-motor, and motor-cognitive) 2. level of physical activity, motor function and balance 3. cognitive function including memory and spatial function 4. health-related quality of life, fear of falling, and freezing of gait 5. qualitative interviews from focus group discussions

Neural Correlates of Cognition in Parkinson's Disease

Cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD) has far-reaching effects on both motor outcomes and quality of life in PD patients. Furthermore, deep brain stimulation (DBS), now an evidence-based treatment for certain cases of PD, has the risk of causing deficits in multiple areas of cognition. As such, the purpose of this study is to understand the neuroanatomical and neurophysiologic basis for impaired cognition in PD. The aim is to identify neural correlates of cognition by measuring brain signal activity while PD patients are engaged in cognition on a computer.
