Filter by:DaTSCAN™ (123I-ioflupnae) tomoscintigraphy assesses the density of dopamine transporters (DATs) on the presynaptic membrane of dopaminergic neurons. This examination is used in clinical routine in patients presenting a parkinsonian syndrome in search of a pre-synaptic dopaminergic denervation pointing to a neurodegenerative origin of this syndrome To date, there is little literature data evaluating the influence of psychotropic treatments frequently used in clinical routine on DaTSCAN™ CT images. Some studies have shown that SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) and SNRI (serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor) antidepressants can significantly alter striatal ioflupane uptake ratios (10-20%) with no obvious influence on the visual interpretation of the examination . The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the most commonly used psychotropic therapies, sometimes in combination, on DaTSCAN™ CT images with a large population of patients included in clinical routine.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether New Touch Digital (NTD) NeuroRPM software installed on wearable devices can objectively measure and track symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease.
This project will determine the feasibility and efficacy of remote assessment and treatment of balance disorders in people with Parkinson's disease.
Aim is to investigate repeatability and stability of four Neurological-related Bulbicam tests in patients suffering Parkinson (PD),Ataxia (AT) and matched healthy control (HC). Study population The study consists of the patients suffering from PD or AT and HV of both genders above 18 years of age without any eye- or neurological disorder. Bulbicam will be used in the study and five tests will be performed The study will be performed as a controlled, open and non-randomized, stratified observational single center. The stratification factors will be pathology (PD&AT) and internal classifications. ed. The main variables will be the variables recorded at the four Bulbicam tests and the standard neuro-ophthalmological variables included for PD and AT Participants, who fulfil the inclusion criteria; do not meet any of the exclusion criteria and willing to give informed consent to participate will receive an appointment for starting the study. During the first day of the study, the included patients will undergo a neuro-ophthalmological examination by a neurologist. Additionally, Bulbicam examination will be performed twice with a rest period of one hour between each registration. The healthy controls will only undergo a standard examination and twice BulbiCam examination. The controls will only participate one day. The patients will participate two more days with two Bulbicam examinations per day. Sample size: Sixteen PD-patients ,16 AT-patients and 32 HCs will be included in the study.
To investigate the difference in the treatment efficacy between transcranial direct current stimulation and transcranial alternating current stimulation on Parkinson's disease, including the improvements in the motor, cognitive, and underlying neural mechanisms behind differences in efficacy by electroencephalography (EEG).
Investigators will evaluate the safety of a 48 week regimen of Leukine administered as a weight-based dose at 3 ug/kg/ day for 5 days followed by a 2-day holiday. This 48 week long study will extend the prior biomarker evaluations observed in a previous study. Clinical signs and symptoms will be measured by personal well-being, physical, and neurological examinations (UPDRS Parts I, II, III, and IV assessments) and blood tests (CBC with differential, total T cell count, and a comprehensive metabolic sera panel). Leukapheresis will be performed to collect large numbers of immune cells for biomarker testing and immune phenotyping. Additionally, the investigators will determine whether immune deficits of PD are consistent during baseline data collection, and the potential Leukine-induced motor control and mobility improvements will be determined by UPDRS part I, II, III, and IV scores off treatment and on treatment.
Parkinson's Disease (PD) affects people universally, including all ethnic and socioeconomic groups, as a highly prevalent neurodegenerative disorder. However, there are several additional challenges for people living with PD in developing countries, especially those with low socioeconomic status. There is limited access to neurological care in Brazil due to an uneven distribution of neurologists and neurological facilities, which is more critical in the poorest regions. In addition, people in these vulnerable communities are more exposed to environmental pollution, including pesticides and metals used in agriculture and mining, respectively. Therefore, reliable data on the prevalence and incidence of PD in Brazil are essential to understand the proportion of this limited access to care for patients with PD, its burden in the region, and the potential role of environmental and lifestyle risk factors in PD. Unfortunately, the literature describes few epidemiological data on PD in Latin America, including Brazil, with an evident need for more information in their regions remarkably different. The investigators will carry out a population-based study in four municipalities in Brazil (Veranópolis-RS, Belém-PA, Jacobina-BA and Candangolândia-DF), comprising distinct communities in terms of ethnic groups, education levels, and environmental and lifestyle exposures, to portray the differences in Brazilian society. The present study will screen all people living in these regions aged 60 and over for parkinsonian symptoms and REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). At least one neurologist will examine those selected to determine the diagnosis of PD or related disorders. The study also will evaluate a random sample of those individuals with a negative screen. Each participant selected after the screening will undergo clinical assessments and interview with the addition of a comprehensive questionnaire on clinical and sociodemographic data, prodromal symptoms, as well as lifestyle and environmental exposures, including occupational use and non-occupational use of pesticides and metals. An equal sample of blood and hair will be collected from individuals with PD and controls. The study will determine the prevalence of PD and related disorders in these distinct communities. An exploratory analysis also will be performed to determine the association between PD and each variable investigated.
Parkinson's disease is characterized by cardinal motor signs and motor freezing, gait, posture and balance disorder. About 80% of the causes of falls in Parkinson's patients are due to postural instability and motor freezing, and patients' quality of life is significantly affected. Loss of balance and falls, which are frequently experienced in Parkinson's patients, cause individuals to feel insecure during activities. It is thought that the quality of life of PD patients whose movements are restricted due to the fear of falling may also be negatively affected. The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio is a marker of peripheral inflammation. The relationship of peripheral inflammation to balance, activity-specific balance confidence, and quality of life in individuals is unclear. The aim of this study was to compare balance, activity-specific balance confidence, quality of life, and the relationship between neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio in Parkinson's patients with and without freezing.
The goal of this study is to test KM-819 in halting or slowing the progression of Parkinson's disease. The study evaluates the safety and tolerability of multiple ascending doses of KM-819 in healthy older adults and participants with Parkinson's disease.
Apathy is one of the most common behavioral symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Patients with apathy show diminution in motivation and goal-directed behaviors, which is a fundamental aspect of human functioning, affecting dependency and quality of life. Although apathy is thought to be potentially treatable currently there are no effective treatments for apathy. Given the higher incidence of medical and psychiatric comorbidities, the Veterans Affairs health system represents a unique population for which medication response may be different from the general population. This study aims to evaluate if a medication that has already been proven to be useful in Alzheimer's disease patients with apathy, could be helpful in Parkinson's disease as well as decreasing its debilitating consequences and reducing patients' dependency on caregivers, providing well-deserved relief to patients and their loved ones.
