Rock Steady Boxing: A Community Based In Person Class

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a non-contact Rock Steady Boxing class delivered to participants with Parkinson's Disease via an in-person community-based program. The study will also assess the overall feasibility of integrating an in-person community program within a neuromuscular course in a Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Specific Aim: To examine the effects of an in-person community-based Rock Steady Boxing class on the functional mobility, functional endurance, cardiovascular capacity, visual-motor reaction times, quality of life, mood/affect and overall physical activity completion and fear of falling on individuals with Parkinson's Disease.

The Effect of a Lighting Intervention on Sleep in Parkinson Disease

50 participants with Parkinson's disease will be recruited to complete actigraphy studies to assess sleep disturbances. For this, participants will wear an Actigraph for seven days. Thirty of these participants with sleep disturbance will go on to receive a tailored lighting intervention (TLI) to assess the effect on sleep, fatigue, and circadian entrainment via urinary melatonin levels.

Efficacy of Cognitive Rehabilitation Using Virtual Reality and Computer-based Cognitive Stimulation on Cognitive Impairment Associated to Movement Disorders

Mild cognitive impairment associated with movement disorders occurs in up to one third of patients in early stages of the disease, and confers an increased risk of developing dementia. Non-pharmacological interventions to improve cognition have so far been based on computer-based cognitive stimulation and rehabilitation programs. These interventions base their mechanism of action on neuroplasticity and how improvements in cognitive function will generalize to functional improvement. Despite having shown certain indicators of efficacy in previous exploratory studies and clinical trials, cognitive rehabilitation continues to show insufficient evidence and requires further study. To date, there are no previous studies using immersive virtual reality (IVR) to improve cognition. Both IVR and cognitive stimulation are based on the premise that they allow the simulation of ecological environments for rehabilitation than conventional rehabilitation, as well as being more efficient by allowing control of extraneous variables and providing safe spaces for patients. The only PD rehabilitation studies that have been conducted using IVR aimed to improve gait and balance disturbances compared to conventional physiotherapy treatment or non-immersive virtual reality (NIVR). We hypothesize that a cognitive rehabilitation program using IVR or computer-mediated cognitive stimulation could have a greater beneficial effect on the cognitive status of patients with cognitive impairment associated with movement disorders compared to other modalities such as music therapy, delaying the worsening of cognitive functions.

Effects of RAS on Gait in PD Patients With DBS

Participants will be asked to walk along with the metronome beats (RAS) during the participants' stimulation state (ON or OFF) for four minutes for each state. The researcher will collect the gait parameters (cadence, velocity, and stride length) of patients before, during, and after RAS in both DBS ON and OFF states. Using MDS-UPDRS, participants' gait patterns will be collected before and after RAS while both DBS is ON and OFF. Electrophysiological activity (local field potentials, LFPs) will be collected across all stages (pre, during, and post-RAS) of evaluation.

Parkinson's disease (PD) leads to multifactorial disabilities with consequent social restrictions, especially in the COVID-19 era. Continuity of care, especially rehabilitation measures, is critical to improve or maintain an adequate QoL for patients. The Parkinson Disease Telerehabilitation Program (PDTR) is an individualized home rehabilitation program using open-source platforms (OSp). The main purpose of this pilot study is to investigate the feasibility of TR in patients with PD by using free OS platforms (PDTR PROGRAM). The target of this study was to have at least 90% of participants completing the program. To complete the program every single patient had to complete at least 80% of the prescribed TR sessions.
