The aim of this study was to evaluate the relation of maternal pain catastrophizing score with child's who underwent circumcision postoperative pain. A cross-sectional study and this study was performed at the Samsun University, Samsun Training and Research Hospital, Samsun, Türkiye. The mothers were divided into low pain catastrophizing (Group 1) and high pain catastrophizing (Group 2) group. Children's postoperative pain intensity was measured using the visual analog scale (VAS) and a faces pain scale (FPS).

Self-Adjusted Nitrous Oxide: A Feasibility Study in the Setting of Vasectomy

This study is being done to see if nitrous oxide during vasectomy decreases pain and anxiety, and also assess whether patients have better satisfaction when they control their own level of nitrous oxide during the procedure. If we find that patients experience less pain or anxiety with nitrous oxide, it could be suggested that self-adjusted nitrous oxide (SANO) may be a useful tool for improving experience of care during vasectomy.

Test Retest Reliability of OA and OH

The goal of this study is to measure the test retest reliability of offset analgesia (OA) and onset hyperalgesia (OH) across multiple study visits. OA and OH are quantitative sensory tests (QST) thought to measure how the brain modulates pain. This study will use a heat thermode to induce OA and OH in healthy, pain-free volunteers across 3 study visits. Additional QST measures and survey data relevant to pain modulation will be collected. This study lays the foundation required to use OA and OH as tools to measure pain modulation in clinical trials. Following their validation, we anticipate that OA and OH will serve as predictive and therapeutic biomarkers, which will aid both in the development of novel analgesics and in treatment selection leading to the personalization of pain management.

PROCO Neck: The Course and Neuroplasticity in Neck Pain-Associated Disorders and Whiplash-Associated Disorders

Neck pain-associated disorders (NAD) and whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) are major health problems. NAD has a lifetime prevalence of 54%. Although the majority of patients recovers within the first three months, a minority develops persistent pain. WAD, in contrast, is reported less frequently, but patients are often suffering more badly. Patients with chronic symptoms represent a considerable burden in terms of pain, suffering, health care needs, and social costs. Findings on the natural course of NAD and WAD reflect the necessity to identify factors besides pain related to the persistence of symptoms. First, alterations of input and processing of multiple sensory modalities causing movement control impairment can result in persistent symptoms and affect the quality of life. Besides, findings of psychosocial factors predictive of pain outcomes support the growing body of research proposing a bidirectional relationship between somatic and psychosocial variables. In particular, there is a pressing need to investigate pain-related activity patterns, besides fear-avoidance behavior in NAD and WAD. Maladaptive activity pattern have an impact on on pain and disability in the long-term prognosis. Mt important, given the high prevalence of NAD and WAD, the cortical representation of the cervical spine has not yet been investigated and, reports on neuroplasticity remain scarce. These shortcomings should be addressed to provide evidence for the temporal aspect of neuroplasticity and its involvement in pain persistence. Hypotheses: We hypothesize I. that impaired sensorimotor abilities, mental health at baseline increase pain intensity and disability during measurement. II. that maladaptive pain-related activity patterns avoidance and overactivity at baseline are prognostic factors for pain persistence and disability. III. that the WAD cohort shows more depression, anxiety and stress compared to the NAD cohort.

Online Mindfulness-based Intervention to Prevent Chronic Pain

Cardiac and orthopedic surgeries are frequent procedures. However, pain after a major surgery may become chronic (lasting >3 months) in adults. Once discharged from the hospital, patients are at risk for chronic post-surgical pain (CPSP) and prolonged opioid use, as they become isolated with high levels of pain. Psychological risk and protective factors such as pain-related catastrophic thoughts and pain acceptance will determine their ability to cope and their opioid use, which makes a support for pain self-management crucial. There is limited research on psychological interventions for pain in the subacute/rehabilitation phase after major surgery. Further, these interventions are demanding and not tailored. Previous work from the Principal Investigator in the acute/hospitalization phase shows that a brief, Web-based intervention tailored to modifiable psychological factors may modulate these and reduce postoperative pain interference. Recently, studies on mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) have multiplied regarding their potential effect on pain acceptance and catastrophic thoughts. Brief, Web-based MBCT for the prevention of CPSP have not been examined. Therefore, a pilot test of a 4-week tailored, Web-based MBCT intervention for adults in the rehabilitation phase will be conducted by 1) assessing the acceptability/feasibility of the intervention; and 2) examining preliminary effects on pain intensity and pain interference with activities, as well as pain acceptance and catastrophic thoughts. This research is significant because it targets the trajectory of CPSP, a leading cause of disability and opioid misuse. This approach is innovative because it promotes pain self-management through the modulation of individual factors. If successful, the intervention could be expanded to numerous populations at risk for chronic pain.

Effect of VR on Anxiety and Pain in Gynecological Surgery

Rationale: Lack of postoperative acute pain management is associated with increased morbidity, longer recovery time, more opioid use and subsequently increased health care costs. There is increasing evidence virtual reality (VR) is effective in the reduction of acute pain. Alternative methods to reduce postoperative pain and multimodal analgesia are necessary for acute postoperative pain management and to reduce opioid use and their adverse effects. Objective: The aim of this study is to explore the effect of VR on pain in the immediate postoperative period after elective gynecological surgery. Secondary objectives are evaluating pre-and postoperative anxiety, pain catastrophizing, analgesic use, length of hospital stay between both groups and to explore tolerability, feasibility and satisfaction of VR use. Study design: The study concerns a non-blinded, single centre, randomised controlled trial. Study population: Eligible women fulfill the inclusion criteria and receive elective gynecological surgery in the Zuyderland Medical Centre location Heerlen. Intervention: The study population will be randomly divided into the intervention group (VR-group) or the standard care- group. The intervention group can choose for an immersive guided relaxation VR experience or an interactive VR experience during the pre- and postoperative period additional to the usual standard care. The participants randomised to the standard care- group will receive only the usual standard care pre-and postoperative. Main study parameters: The primary outcome is postoperative pain measured on a numeric rating scale (NRS). A total of 30 patients have to be included in each group. This means that a total of 60 women will have to be included in the study. Nature and extent of the burden and risks associated with participation, benefit and group relatedness: The study population experiences a small medical risk when participating to this study. They can experience side-effects of VR for example dizziness or nausea and in rare cases epileptic insults. Participants of the study have to fill in a questionnaire before randomization and pre-and postoperative score of pain and anxiety on a zero to ten score scale.

Verbalization in Patients With Non-specific Low Back Pain and Central Sensitization

The primary goal of this study is to examine the effects of limiting complaints on pain and pain catastrophizing (PC) in individuals with low back pain (LBP) who are in a state of central sensitization (CS). The study will be performed on individuals who have LBP and are in a state of CS. CS is classified as a type of pain which has the following dominant features: pain that is disproportionate to the nature or extent of injury/pathology; disproportionate, non-mechanical, unpredictable pattern of pain provocation in response to aggravating/easing factors; strong association with maladaptive psychological factors ; diffuse/non-anatomic areas of pain/tenderness to palpation. These criterion have been demonstrated to have discriminative validity for diagnosing CS.
