Baby's First Bites: Promoting Vegetable Intake in Infants and Toddlers

Overweight and obesity in preschool children is more and more common and predicts overweight in later childhood and adulthood. A healthy eating pattern with many vegetables decreases the risk to develop overweight. As many food preferences are learned in the first years of life, teaching children to like vegetables from the very start of eating solid foods is essential. Starting baby's first bites of solid foods with vegetables instead of more sweet tastes like fruits may promote vegetable liking. Also, it is important that parents know how to feed their children: e.g., paying attention to whether the child is hungry or full is essential, as is not pressuring them to eat. What is yet unknown is which of these two are more important to promote, to facilitate vegetable liking in young children. Is starting with vegetables most important, or educating parents on their feeding-techniques? And is a combination of both most effective? This study tests which of three interventions is most effective to promote vegetable intake and liking in children up until the age of 3 years: a) a focus on the 'what' (starting with vegetables); b) a focus on the 'how' (listen to your child's cues while feeding); c) a focus on both the 'what' and the 'how'. These three groups will be compared to a control group receiving no advice on how to introduce solid foods on children's vegetable intake and liking.

Iron and Insulin Resistance in Overweight and Obese Humans

Determine the effects of reducing whole-body iron stores in overweight/obese subjects (via one-time blood donation) on adipose tissue iron content, factors regulating iron homeostasis and lipolytic rate in adipose tissue, as well as measures of adipose tissue and whole-body insulin resistance. After a screening visit to determine eligibility, subjects will undergo a battery of tests for the determination of primary outcome measures at baseline. They will then donate 1 unit (~500 mL) of blood (at a local blood donation center) and return for a follow-up testing 4 weeks after blood donation. During the 4-week period between study trials, subjects will be required to maintain a stable body mass and not alter their dietary or physical activity habits.

Effects of the Administered Time of Meal on the Treatment of Overweight and Obesity

Objectives: To evaluate the impact of the meal time administered on the body weight of adult individuals of both sexes, being overweight and obese. Experimental design: randomized controlled trial. Place of research: Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. Materials and methods: Anthropometric data, blood pressure, waist diameter will be measured; venous blood samples will be collected and stored for glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, urea, creatinine and ALT in serum. Intervention: Wait at least 20 minutes after finishing the first portion of meals, previously considered sufficient by the individual before serving again. The control group will also serve the dish the same way, but you can serve additional portion without waiting. Measurements: P values less than 0.05 will be considered statistically significant. Expected results: Weight loss, decrease in anthropometric markers and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.

Effect of Exercise Programme on Gut Microbiota, CVD Risk Factors and Appetite Regulation in Overweight Women

Evidence suggests that gut microbiota contributes to the development of atherosclerosis and therefore CVDs. Exercise has been extensively reported to be protective against CVDs due to modification of body fatness, metabolic risk factors and cardio-respiratory fitness. It remains unclear whether impact of exercise on CVD risk can be at least in part explained by changes in the microbiota. It also remains to be investigated whether modification of appetite and appetite hormones due to participation in exercise are related to changes in the gut microbiota composition. Therefore, this study will be conducted in overweight, healthy, sedentary women and will investigate the effect of a 4-week moderate intensity exercise programme on gut microbiota composition and metabolic activity, plasma concentrations of fasting and postprandial lipids, glucose, insulin and inflammatory markers, fasting and postprandial gut appetite hormones, subjective appetite measures and cardio-respiratory fitness.

Effects of Alpha Lipoic Acid Supplementation on Metabolic Syndrome Markers in Young Overweight or Obese Males

Eight weeks supplementation of alpha lipoic acid (known superantioxidant already produced by the body) will significantly improve metabolic syndrome markers (e.g., excess body weight, blood pressure, glucose, insulin, blood lipids, and self-report measures) in young (18-25 years) overweight or obese males compared to placebo (cellulose starch). If the hypothesis is supported, alpha lipoic acid ingestion could be beneficial in reducing disease risk and enhancing metabolic dysfunction in ethnic individuals. Therefore, the purpose is to establish the impact alpha lipoic acid has on the modifiable markers associated with metabolic perturbations consistent with metabolic syndrome in males.

Increasing in Chewing Number Reduces Energy Intake in Healthy Weight and Overweight Young Adults

A randomized cross-over design aims to investigate chewing activities between healthy vs. overweight and determine effects chewing times on energy intake and postprandial plasma glucose and insulin. Forty-one participants were allocated into lean and overweight groups according to BMI. Phase I, Bite size (g/bite), bite rate (bites/min), chewing frequency (chews/min), and chews (chews/g food) were recorded after a sandwich breakfast. Phase II, gram of sandwich eaten ad libitum after 15 and 50 chew per bite (number from phase I) were recorded. Postprandial plasma glucose and insulin were examined at 0 (baseline), 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 min.

Effect of Two Alcohol-free Beers With Different Carbohydrates Composition on Lipids and Glucose Metabolism

This a controlled, double-blind, randomized, cross designed study to determine the effect of an alcohol-free beer with low glycemic index carbohydrates (isomaltulose) and a resistant maltodextrin, comparing to an alcohol-free beer with regular composition, on glycemic metabolism (glucose, glycated hemoglobin, insulin and HOMA index) in subjects with recently diagnosed diabetes mellitus and overweight or obesity. 44 subjects were randomized to consume for 10 weeks: a) two alcohol-free beers with regular carbohydrates composition per day; b) two alcohol-free beers with modified carbohydrates composition per day. Those subjects randomized to begin with A beer during 10 weeks will change to B beer during the second phase for 10 weeks and vice versa. There is a 4-8 weeks wash-out period between two phases.

Effect of Mediterranean Diet During Pregnancy on the Onset of Overweight and Obesity in the Offspring

The first 1,000 days of life, from the conception to 24 months, are crucial to achieve long-term health outcomes and represent a strategic period to intervene under prevention and public health perspective. Nutritional exposures during this critical period of life can influence the future disease susceptibility. Maternal diet during pregnancy has been linked to offspring overweight/obesity risk and it could represent a potential target for overweight/obesity prevention. The Mediterranean Diet (MD) is considered one of the healthiest dietary models, which impacts beneficially the gut microbiome (GM), providing high amounts of fiber, antioxidants polyphenols and vitamins, and a balanced ratio of essential fatty acids (ω6:ω3). Notably, the MD beneficial effects are due to the synergistic and interactive combinations of nutrients, and the modulation of gene expression through epigenetic changes. Unofrtunately, the MD mechanisms during pregnancy in the prevention of childhood overweight/obesity are not yet fully known.
