Filter by:Ascites is the accumulation of fluid inside the abdomen. This can happen when the liver fails due to a substantial amount of scarring (cirrhosis). Patients (pts) must have this fluid drained and as cirrhosis progresses, patients will require drainage of ascites repeatedly on a regular basis, leading to frequent hospitals visits and increased complications. The current drainage device is slow and doesn't always drain completely so pts have to return repeatedly to keep symptoms under control. A new device (called Melody) has been developed and specifically designed for the purpose of draining ascites fluid, which the Investigators expect to drain faster and completely. This study will compare the volume of ascites drained using the new 'Melody' catheter device with that used in standard NHS practice. If the melody catheter device is confirmed as superior to the current device this would improve patient experience (less frequent visits to hospital and increased length of time between visits). With fewer procedures performed per patient, the pressure on the NHS would be greatly reduced in terms of time and costs.
Single arm, multi-center prospective clinical trial to determine the safety and effectiveness of the AQUABEAM System in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men 45 to 80 years of age.
The RUTIVAC-1 study is a Phase I Clinical Trial designed to evaluate the systemic and mucosal immunological response and provide safety information after the use of RUTI® administration to individuals with NMIBC. The study will enroll individuals treated with Transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT), diagnosed to have high-risk Non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) and suitable candidates for BCG therapy and who meet all eligibility criteria. Forty individuals will be recruited and randomized 1:1 to receive two subcutaneous shots of 25 μg RUTI® or placebo. After vaccination, individuals will receive the standard induction course, of intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG)therapy (weekly BCG for six weeks). 4 to 8 weeks after the last intravesical BCG administration (BCG6) a visit will be performed (Visit 1, end of the interventional phase). Once all participants have performed VISIT 1 immunological assays will be performed and data will be analyzed. At the end of the Interventional Phase the blind will be opened, except for the study physicians who will remain blind during all the follow-up. All the individuals will be followed up for three years since TURBT.
The purpose of the current study is to test if weight change is differentially affected by consumption of foods that are identical in carbohydrate (i.e. sugar) but vary in food form over 1 month.
Computer-assisted rehabilitation of attention deficits in pediatric Multiple Sclerosis and ADHD patients recruited during the study "Cognitive impairment in Pediatric Onset Multiple Sclerosis: research of biomarkers predictive of cognitive impairment progression".
Noninvasive stimulation of the central nervous system, including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), has been increasingly used in the investigation of cortical plasticity. The purpose of our study is to understand mechanistically-at the neurophysiological and systems levels-how the brain learns new motor skills. We propose to study the acquisition, consolidation, and retention of motor skill learning in healthy subjects. At the behavioral level, we will use movement kinematics to quantify and characterize movement, which allow us to infer functional strategies used by the brain to reduce movement errors. At a neurophysiological level, we will use TMS to document changes in cortical circuitry, which will allow us to infer neuroplastic changes possibly subserving these strategies. At a systems level, we will enhance motor system excitability using tDCS, which will enable us to infer the contribution of the stimulated area to the motor system's ability to learn new skills.
The primary purpose of this study is to evaluate the post-marketing safety of ImbruvicaTM (ibrutinib capsule 140 milligram [mg]) under actual conditions of use, and to understand the incidence of adverse events (AEs) (serious and non-serious AEs).
The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided transversalis fascia plane block (TFPB) and quadratus lumborum block (QLB) on post-operative analgesia in pediatric patients with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH)under going open reduction surgeries(Salter acetabular osteotomy, combined with proximal femoral rotation osteotomy). The effectiveness of TFPB/QLB for perioperative analgesia in lumbar nerves (L1) innervated surgery have been demonstrated in recent studies. However, this regional technique rarely applied to children. The objective of our research is to assess the quality of postoperative analgesia in pediatric patients who had received a preoperative TFPB/QLB for hip surgery.
The high prevalence of cannabis and other substance use disorders are a major barrier to recovery in people with schizophrenia. Moreover, schizophrenia patients have significant deficits in cognitive function, which may be exacerbated by cannabis use. Complicating these problems is the lack of evidence-based treatments for co-morbid cannabis use disorders (CUDs) in schizophrenia; there are no established pharmacotherapies. Therefore, this study is investigating the effects of high-frequency (20Hz) repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on cannabis use disorder and cognitive function in patients with co-morbid schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder. The proposed study would be the first randomized, double-blind, sham controlled trial of rTMS in patients with schizophrenia and co-morbid CUD. A total of N=40 schizophrenia smokers with co-morbid cannabis use disorder will be assigned to either active rTMS (N=20) or sham rTMS (N=20) as a treatment regimen of 5X/week treatment for four consecutive weeks. All participants will receive weekly behavioral therapy for 4 weeks. The investigators predict that active rTMS will be well-tolerated and superior to sham rTMS for the treatment of CUD in schizophrenia.
GSK2269557 is being developed as an anti-inflammatory and anti-infective agent for the treatment of inflammatory airways diseases. This is the first study using a new formulation of GSK2269557 in healthy subjects and will evaluate the safety, tolerability and PK of a single dose of GSK2269557. Data derived from this study will inform on the PK profile and systemic exposure expected during Phase 2b. Approximately twelve healthy subjects will be randomized to receive a single dose of GSK2269557 750 micrograms (µg) or a single dose of GSK2269557 500 µg via the ELLIPTA® dry powder inhaler (DPI) formulated in a blend containing 0.4 percent magnesium stearate (MgSt) in 1:1 ratio. This randomized, parallel group study will be carried out in 3 phases, including screening phase, treatment phase and follow-up phase. The total study duration for each subject will be up to 6 weeks. ELLIPTA is a registered trademark of GlaxoSmithKline group of companies.
