Pranayama Practice on the Autonomic Nervous System

The proposed study design will be a randomized, cross-over trial testing different pranayama breathing interventions. Participants (N=40) will perform each of the following five interventions in a randomly assigned order: (1) internal-paced pranayama intervention (Sheetali/Sheetkari for 10 minutes each) (2) internal-paced deep breathing control (3) external-paced pranayama intervention at a rate of 6 bpm (4) external-paced deep breathing at a rate of 6 bpm (5) sitting quietly with no external instruction.

Adherence and Coagulation Assays in Dabigatran-treated Patients With Atrial Fibrillation

In patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation treated with dabigatran etexilate, the level of adherence will be measured using a questionnaire, the Danish National Prescription Registry and pillcount and will be related to plasma levels of dabigatran measured by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and coagulation assays. The aim of the study is to measure the level of adherence and evaluate the usefulness of different coagulation assays to measure adherence in these patients. Furthermore, the aim is to determine the correlation between the anticoagulant effect of dabigatran using different coagulation assays and plasma levels of dabigatran. Most studies so far have been performed in vitro with plasma samples spiked with dabigatran. In this study the present knowledge from results of coagulation assays in dabigatran spiked plasma samples will be compared to the results of coagulation assays using blood samples from real-life patients.

This study will evaluate the safety and efficacy of repeated administration of NurOwn® (MSC-NTF cells) therapy, which is based on transplantation of autologous bone marrow derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC), which are enriched from the patient's own bone marrow, propagated ex vivo and induced to secrete Neurotrophic factors (NTFs). The autologous NurOwn® (MSC-NTF cells) are back-transplanted into the patient intrathecally by standard lumbar puncture where neurons and glial cells are expected to take up the neurotrophic factors secreted by the transplanted cells

Apalutamide and Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Analog With or Without Abiraterone Acetate in Treating Participants With Prostate Cancer

This phase II trial studies how well apalutamide and gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog with or without abiraterone acetate work in treating participants with prostate cancer prior to surgery. Apalutamide and abiraterone acetate may stop the growth of cancer cells either by killing the cells or by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. Hormone therapy, using gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog, may fight prostate cancer by lowering the amount of testosterone the body makes. Giving apalutamide, gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog, and abiraterone acetate may work better in treating participants with prostate cancer.

Recovery Housing and Drug Abuse Treatment Outcome

Reinforcement-Based Therapy (RBT) is an intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment that includes relapse prevention skills training, goal setting, help with finding employment and abstinence-contingent rent payment for recovery housing in the community. It is meant to provide motivation for continued abstinence while enhancing social stability. In this study, treatment was offered to inner city opiate and cocaine users immediately following a brief medically-supported residential detoxification. Previous research had shown that RBT produces 3- month outcomes superior to those for patients who are referred to outpatient treatment in the community. The present study compared outcomes for patients (N = 243) randomly assigned to receive abstinence-contingent recovery housing with (full RBT) or without additional intensive counseling or to receive usual care referral to outpatient treatment following detoxification. Outcomes were similar at 3- and 6-month follow-ups for those who received recovery housing with (full RBT) and without additional counseling and both these treatments were superior to usual care referral. Study findings support the efficacy of post-detoxification recovery housing with or without counseling for opiate and cocaine users.
