Orthotics and Prosthetics are important areas where physiotherapists order a variety of assistive aids to restore, compensate, or prevent physical ailments and disorders, such as here, Knee Osteoarthritis. This study will be helpful not only in establishing the role of footwear modification as an adjunct treatment protocol for knee osteoarthritis but also elicit a multidisciplinary team approach which is a much-needed area, especially in the emergency rehabilitation area.
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a rheumatic disease that causes serious cartilage damage in the knee joint. Moderate physical activity can slow cartilage degeneration in moderate OA stages. Remarkable weakness and atrophy of the quadriceps and hamstrings is a common problem in patients with chronic osteoarthritis, but in arthritis, it may be difficult to achieve strength gains due to the pain caused by heavy load-resistant exercises. Exercising with these high loads may not be possible or may injure painful arthritic knees. For this reason, lately, blood flow restriction exercises have been directed to achieve the same gain by exercising with lower loads by restricting the blood flow with a cuff. We aimed to limit the blood flow in osteoarthritic knees and to provide strength gain and pain reduction provided by conventional exercises given routinely. Our hypothesis in this study is that exercises that blood flow restriction exercises will reduce pain and increase strength as well as conventional exercises.
The purpose of this study is to test an osteoarthritis (OA) primary care Physical activity Care Pathway (OA-PCP), a scalable intervention that includes: 1) a practical process for physical inactivity screening in primary care, 2) a brief, tailored physical activity (PA) counseling intervention via telephone, 3) connection of patients with community programs and other resources to support PA, and 4) follow-up with patients to deliver additional appropriate counseling and referrals to PA resources. This program will be compared to another program that provides education on a variety of topics important to understanding osteoarthritis (OA) and its care.

Total hip replacement (THR) is being considered as one of the most effective medical procedures. Since its introduction, there was a worldwide debate over proper implant selection in terms of size, bearing type and shape. The diameter of used femoral heads components grew throughout the years - from 22 mm in the 1960s to 32 mm in the 2000s, which is the most commonly used size nowadays. In recent years there was a visible use of large femoral heads (>=36mm) in several registers. In the USA there was a significant grow in use of this heads rising from 1% in early 200s to even 58% in 2009. There is a strong evidence data and many researchers concerning range of movement, risk of dislocation, functional results, pain and prosthesis wear depending of femoral head size. In terms of gait characteristics there are several deviations reported concerning both patients with hip osteoarthritis (OA) and following THR. There is a lack of literature concerning influence of used implants on gait parameters and whether this goal of the surgery can be achieved. The aim of this study was to assess potential differences of lower limb biomechanics during gait in patients following total hip replacement surgery depending on femoral head diameter and compare them to the normal gait of healthy volunteers. As a secondary outcome authors wanted to inspect correlation between gait parameters and patient-reported outcome.
This study is designed as a long-term extension to the Phase 3 parent-study SM04690-OA-11. It aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of long-term use of lorecivivint (LOR) in subjects with knee osteoarthritis (OA). The first 48 weeks will be single-blind and placebo-controlled while the remainder of the study will be open-label and uncontrolled. Subjects must enroll no later than 6 weeks following completion of the parent-study.
