Filter by:Millions of children and adolescents are prescribed opioid pain relievers each year, placing them at risk for serious adverse events and misuse in the home setting. Parents who manage these medicines, therefore, need to recognize opioid-related risks and make decisions that will both reduce these risks yet ensure effective pain relief for their children. The proposed research will evaluate new strategies to help parents learn about opioid risks, make safe and effective analgesic decisions, and develop and demonstrate safe drug management behaviors. 840 parents and their children who are undergoing an elective surgical procedure will be recruited. Parents will be randomized to receive the new educational and practical behavioral strategy or routine information. Parents' knowledge and perceptions will be evaluated at baseline and at critical times after surgery. Parents' opioid handling and administration will also be assessed.
The study will examine how medical cannabis use affects opioid analgesic use over time, with particular attention to THC/CBD content, HIV outcomes, and severe adverse events.
Chronic pain is becoming increasingly more prevalent worldwide. High rates of co-morbid psychological distress are also commonly found among individuals living with chronic pain. Often requiring a multi-modal treatment approach, a growing body of literature suggests that digital behavioral health interventions and tools may serve as promising complementary options to help individuals cope with the pain.
We aim to determine if descriptive normative feedback of peer prescribing reduces opioid analgesic prescribing by emergency medicine providers
Patients will be randomized to one of two interventions intended to facilitate safe disposal of opioids after cessation following surgery. For pragmatic reasons, participants will be randomized by day to either the information sheet or the disposal bag using a block randomization schedule. To ensuring adequate sample size, patients will be enrolled for a ~4-week period following the 2-week usual care run in period. In the event that the sample size estimate has not been reached after the 4-week intervention period, additional patients will be enrolled accordingly.
The number of opioid overdose deaths in the United States has quadrupled in 15 years, a dramatic manifestation of the current opioid abuse epidemic. This rise parallels a sharp increase in the amount of legal prescription opioids dispensed. The abundance of prescription opioids available is a primary pathway for opioid abuse and diversion. Adjusting post- cesarean delivery opioid prescribing practices to better match actual patient need has the potential to reduce unused opioids available for diversion, nonmedical use, and development of chronic dependence, as well as reduce wasted resources.
The overall goal of this project is to develop initial human data on effects of novel compounds on safety (interactions with oxycodone) and efficacy (subjective response to oxycodone) in non-treatment seeking opioid use disorder subjects. The compound to be studied will be the 5-HT2CR agonist lorcaserin. There are no known or reported adverse interactions between lorcaserin and oxycodone or other opioids.
Single center double blind randomised controlled trial. 60 subjects. Giving lidocaine IV or saline to patients due to robot assisted colorectal surgery. Primary outcome is cumulative morphine consumption at 24 hours.
This multicenter randomized (block randomization) controlled parallel arm pilot study comparing the incorporation vs no incorporation of a Nurse Pain Educator into clinics that treat chronic non cancer pain patients with opioid analgesics. Subjects who are either opioid naïve or opioid experienced will be enrolled into the study.
The primary objective of this study is to better understand post-discharge utilization of prescribed opioid analgesic medications following surgery. A secondary objective of this study is to gain a better understanding of prevailing modes of storage for opioid medications.
