Cardiac Biomarkers in Early Detection of Cardiotoxicity in Patients Receiving Sunitinib or Sorafenib Chemotherapy

This trial studies how well cardiac biomarkers work in the early detection of cardiotoxicity in patients receiving sunitinib malate or sorafenib chemotherapy. Some chemotherapies are known to cause damage to heart muscle cells, resulting in heart failure. Often, the damage is not detected until heart failure has already occurred. Testing for cardiac biomarkers, such as troponin I and/or T and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), may be useful in detecting heart damage earlier than other tests currently performed (such as echocardiogram and electrocardiogram).

To determine the correlation between 4-dimensional computed tomography (4D CT) derived ventilation and single photon emission tomography (SPECT) aerosol Tc-99m determined ventilation. Secondary Objective: 1. To evaluate the reproducibility of the 4D CT derived ventilation and to obtain an estimate of the variance in a single setting. 2. To assess the correlation between hypoperfused and hypoventilated pulmonary regions in patients with thoracic malignancies. 3. To investigate the effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on ventilation and tumor motion.

Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) has revolutionized the treatment of hematopoietic malignancies.Unfortunately, graft versus host disease (GvHD) remains a major toxicity that greatly limits the application and efficacy of BMT.Current standard prophylaxis and therapy for acute GvHD include mainly the use of immunosuppressive drugs that help less than 50% of the patients and are associated with increased infection risk. ApoCell treatment is anticipated to be a prophylactic measure for acute GvHD by inducing tolerance in the donor effector cells, leading to a potentially significant decrease in GVHD.

Donor Stem Cell Transplant After Conditioning Therapy in Treating Patients With Hematologic Cancer, Recurrent or Metastatic Solid Tumor, or Other Disease

RATIONALE: Giving chemotherapy before a donor stem cell transplant helps stop the growth of cancer or abnormal cells. It also helps stop the patient's immune system from rejecting the donor's stem cells. When the healthy stem cells from a donor are infused into the patient they may help the patient's bone marrow make stem cells, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Sometimes the transplanted cells from a donor can make an immune response against the body's normal cells. Giving cyclosporine and methotrexate before and after transplant may stop this from happening. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying the side effects and how well donor stem cell transplant works when given after conditioning therapy in treating patients with hematologic cancer, recurrent or metastatic solid tumor, or other disease.
