Gender Difference of Metabolic Syndrome and Its Association Between Dietary Diversity at Different Ages

With the development of economics in China, the dietary diversity got higher. Meanwhile, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) raised up as well. To investigate the gender difference of getting MetS and its various associations with dietary diversity at different ages.Data of adults(n=4308) aged 18+ y with three consecutive 24-h recalls and complete co-variates information were extracted from Chinese Nutrition and Health Survey in 2009. Modified Dietary Diversity Score (DDS) was adopted to capture the diversity of diet. MetS was defined by the harmonized criteria. Multivariable adjusted logistic regression was carried out to detect the association between DDS and MetS and its components for young, middle aged and elderly adults by a cross-sectional study. Tetranectin as a Novel Obesity-associated Adipokine for Regulating Lipid Accumulation

Adipose tissue is strongly correlated to obesity and diabetes which are two major problems in the worldwide. Adipose tissue is involved in modulating glucose and energy metabolism locally and systemically by secreting factors, called adipocytokines. Tetranectin (TN), a novel adipocytokine, is secreted by adipose tissues. TN may regulate the glucose/energy homeostasis to affect lipid accumulation.The role of TN in adipocytes with or without TN on regulation of adipose tissue growth and lipid metabolism is valuable to be studied. Materials and methods: Secreted proteins from human adipocyte culture medium were deciphered using 2-D polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and determined by LC/MS with MALDI-TOF analysis of proteins. Adipose tissues were obtained from the breast of 15 women undergoing mastectomy. Serum samples from 200 normal healthy people and 54 breast cancer patients were assigned to either a lean or obese group according to the body mass index. The TN protein concentration was measured in the culture medium of stromal-vascular fraction (SVF)-derived adipocytes from healthy humans, breast cancer patients, pigs and also from 3T3-L1 cells. Associations between plasma TN and other biomarkers were assessed with Pearson's correlations and multivariable linear regression.

This cross-over study investigates health effects of dietary intake of whole walnuts towards cardiovascular risk factors in adults under low cardiovascular risk. Investigators hypothesize that daily intake of whole nuts as a replacement meal, would improve cardiovascular risk factors, including traditional risk factors and molecular biomarkers. The participants are randomly assigned to receive either study treatment, or no treatment, and are crossed after five weeks. The study subjects are instructed to continue with their habitual diet and physical activity.

Effects of Water-Based Exercise in Women With Metabolic Syndrome

The objective of the present study was to compare the neuromuscular, cardiorespiratory and metabolic effects of 12 weeks of aerobic training, strength training and combined training in the aquatic environment in women with MS. For this purpose, 51 postmenopausal, sedentary and MS women were randomly divided into three intervention groups: hydro-aerobic (HA, n = 18, 63.77 ± 5.03 years), hydro-power (HF, n = 16, 61.01 ± 4.93 years) and hydro-combined (HC; n = 17; 60.52 ± 6.91). A subsample participated in eight weeks without physical exercise to characterize a control period. The three intervention groups performed two weekly sessions of 60 minutes for 12 weeks. Before and after the training period, blood tests, muscle strength tests, cardiorespiratory evaluation, functional tests and a questionnaire were performed. For statistical analysis, the Generalized Estimates Equations (GEE) model was used, using the "group" and the "time" as factors. The Bonferroni post hoc was used to locate the differences and the significance index adopted was α = 0.05.

Low Carbohydrate/High Protein Diet to Improve Metabolic Health

Individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) are living to ages when metabolic disorders are highly prevalent. The combination of impaired glucose tolerance and insulin resistance can disrupt lipid metabolism and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and contribute to an accelerated aging process in the SCI population. Feasible interventions to improve metabolic function in the chronic SCI are in great demand. Compared to pharmacologic therapies, dietary modification is a more cost-effective treatment option for reducing the risk of metabolic dysfunction that, surprisingly, has not been rigorously investigated in people with SCI. Therefore, in the present study the investigators will investigate the efficacy of an 8-week, eucaloric (a meal plan designed specifically to provide the exact amount of calories needed to maintain a given body weight) LC-HP dietary intervention for improving metabolic function, body composition, gut bacteria composition and quality of life in individuals with SCI and impaired glucose tolerance or type 2 diabetes. The investigators also aim to determine the association between changes in the composition of gut bacteria and improvements in metabolic function and the association between improvements in metabolic function and improvements in quality of life.
