Filter by:Under conditions of first-line drug treatment in antidiabetic drug naïve/drug free patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia, to show that :- the efficacy of a fixed combination (FC) of fenofibrate and metformin on glycemic control is not inferior to that of rosiglitazone and the efficacy of FC of fenofibrate and metformin on triglyceride control is superior to that of rosiglitazone.
Skeletal buffering of chronic acid loads may contribute to a significant amount of bone loss over time. Evidence from a few small short-term studies suggests that basic compounds, namely potassium citrate and potassium bicarbonate may reduce bone loss and improve bone density. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of potassium citrate on bone metabolism. We hypothesize that administration of potassium citrate to postmenopausal women with osteopenia will reduce bone resorption and improve bone mineral density. Postmenopausal women with osteopenia (T score between -1.0 and -2.5) and no history of fracture will be randomized to either daily potassium citrate or placebo for one year. Primary outcomes will be markers of bone turnover, which will be measured over 12 months. Secondary outcomes will be bone mineral density, compliance, and adverse events.

We are doing this study to learn more about the early history of universal screening for metabolic disorders such as PKU and galactosemia. In particular, we are interested in learning from our past experience to inform our current plans to expand universal newborn screening. Following standard historical research methodology, we will begin with a review of the historical scholarship on PKU and galactosemia, including more general works on mental retardation, genetics, public health screening, and metabolic disorders. We will also obtain scientific publications and archival sources on the early screening and treatment of these disorders. Lastly, we will conduct oral history interviews with key participants in teh early screening and treatment of PKU and galactosemia.
In patients with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), the researchers want to study the relative effects of pioglitazone, simvastatin, or the combination of both on: - intima media thickness (IMT) as an easily assessed marker of atherosclerosis - heart rate variability (HRV) as a marker of autonomic neuropathy - flow-mediated vasodilatation (FMD) of the brachial artery as a marker of endothelial function - vascular and metabolic lab parameters
Primary: To estimate efficacy of SR29142 to the pediatric patients with newly diagnosed hematological malignancies at high risk for Tumor Lysis Syndrome, by evaluation of plasma uric acid concentration. Secondary: To investigate the safety in this population and anti-SR29142 antibodies, anti-SCP antibodies, and pharmacokinetic parameters.
Metabolic syndrome is rapidly emerging as an epidemic of global proportions and its definition is still evolving. Patients with this syndrome are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, and at increased risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease. Metabolic syndrome is strongly associated with obesity, and more specifically with abdominal obesity. Abdominal obesity, comprises two main components: visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous (SAT) adipose tissue depots, with VAT reported as more metabolically active than SAT, and thought to play a major role in the metabolic disturbances associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is fast becoming the most common liver disease and is associated with obesity, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Bariatric surgery has yielded dramatic results including longitudinal loss of excess body weight and either complete reversal or significant improvement of several features of metabolic syndrome, NAFLD, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in obese patients.
Urea cycle disorders (UCD) are a group of rare inherited metabolism disorders. Infants and children with UCD commonly experience episodes of vomiting, lethargy, and coma. The purpose of this study is to perform a long-term analysis of a large group of individuals with various UCDs. The study will focus on the natural history, disease progression, treatment, and outcome of individuals with UCD.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether the intervention for newly diagnosed abnormal glucose tolerance after coronary stenting will improve the long-term clinical outcome.
