Filter by:Main objective : The purpose of this study is to prove that the effects of bacterial endotoxin and cytokine TNF-α, on protein loss, fatty acid release, and glucose metabolism depend on two mechanisms: 1. Direct local effects in muscle tissue. 2. Activation of the hypothalamo-pituitary axis and a stress-hormone response Study protocols: 1. Acute metabolic effects of TNF-α(Beromun, Boehringer-Ingelheim Germany) vs placebo perfused into the femoral artery of the leg in 8 healthy subjects. 2. Acute metabolic effects of - placebo(saline) - endotoxin(US standard reference E.Coli, endotoxin) - TNF-α(Beromun, Boehringer-Ingelheim Germany) given systemically - in 8 patients with hypopituitarism(to block stress hormone release) and in 8 healthy subjects all studied thrice.
The study is designed as an interventional (as blood investigations will be done) dietary survey of diabetic & non-diabetic population sample of India to understand & compare dietary patterns among them.The study objective is to find out amount of carbohydrate content of daily diet of diabetic population study . This study does not intend to study the effect of any drugs. There will be 2 groups : Type 2 diabetics and non diabetic population. The study will begin after the study approval by ethics committee. The subject will involved after they sign the consent form. The study involves general examination of patients, collection of data like history of disease, interview by dietitian with the help of questionnaire, blood investigations (only in diabetic population only) and glycaemic control status of only diabetic population.The study is planned to be enroll 800 subjects (400 in each groups) from 10 study centers spread across India. The study data will be analyzed with appropriate statistical methods.

Studies of the human gut microbiome have suggested that treatment or prevention aimed at the obese microbiome could influence the development of obesity-associated metabolic disturbances. The objective of this project is to explore if a dietary intervention in 60 obese women with the probiotic Lactobacillus paracasei ssp paracasei F19 or flax seed fibres targeting the gut microbiome, can reduce insulin resistance, low-grade inflammation or dyslipidaemia, and to explore the interaction between the human genome and the gut microbiome. The study is based on the following hypotheses: - Treatment with the probiotic Lactobacillus paracasei ssp paracasei F19 and flax seed fibres will lower the metabolic risk profile in the intervention groups compared with placebo. - The effect on the metabolic risk markers can be correlated with changes in the gut microbiota (measured in faeces). After completion of the dietary intervention, the participants are offered a 10-week weight reduction program. Those who participate in the weight-loss program are invited to an optional follow-up visit in connection with the last visit at the clinical dietician, for the purpose of exploring the effect of weight loss on the gut microbiota and obesity-associated metabolic disturbances.
This study is to investigate the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of single ascending oral doses of PF-04991532 in Japanese healthy subjects. The secondary objective is to investigate the pharmacokinetics and safety of single ascending oral doses of PF-04991532 in Western healthy subjects and to compare the pharmacokinetics between Japanese and Western healthy subjects.
Evidence exists that EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid or C20:5n-3) supplementation can reduce the risk for coronary heart disease. EPA can be synthesized from α-linolenic acid (ALA or C18:3n-3), but conversion is low. It has been suggested that the rate-limiting step for this conversion is the Δ6-desaturation of ALA into stearidonic acid (SDA or C18:4n-3). Thus, providing oils rich in SDA may increase the endogenous synthesis of EPA. This may subsequently lower serum triacylglycerol concentrations, an effect frequently observed after EPA supplementation, especially in people with increased triacylglycerol levels. The objective is to study the effects of echium oil, rich in SDA on serum triacylglycerol concentrations in healthy overweight and slightly obese men and women. The minor objective is to study the effects of echium oil on the omega-3 index, which is negatively related to cardiovascular risk and defined as the proportion of EPA and DHA in red blood cells.
Background: - Osteoporosis is a condition where the bone becomes more brittle and more likely to break as a person ages. The drugs that people take to treat this condition have prevented many common hip fractures. But these drugs may be associated with problems in the shape and structure of the hip bone after many years of use. These changes in the hip bone may lead to an unusual kind of hip fracture. These fractures are very rare, so it is hard to study them. Researchers want to learn more about these fractures. Objectives: - To compare hip x-rays of three groups: people who have been taking osteoporosis drugs for several years, those who have just started taking them, and those who have never taken these drugs. Eligibility: - People at least 50 years of age who have been taking osteoporosis drugs for at least 5 years. - People at least 50 years of age who have been taking these drugs for less than 1 year. - People at least 50 years of age who have never taken these drugs. Design: - All participants will have three total visits over 3 years. - At the first visit, those taking part will have a medical history and physical exam. They will complete a questionnaire about medication use and bone health. They will also have an x-ray of the hips and pelvis, and have a bone density scan (the kind used to test for osteoporosis) of the hips. Those in the study will repeat these exams and medical history questions at followup visits. These visits will take place 18 months and 36 months after the first study visit. - At any of these visits, participants who may have a hip fracture that does not show up on the x-rays will have an imaging study to examine the bone more closely. - Participants who receive a hip replacement or suffer from a broken bone at any time should inform the study researchers as soon as possible.
