Filter by:The proposed 2-week, double-blind, crossover, proof of concept study aims to measure and manipulate core neurochemical (i.e., dysregulated brain GABA/glutamate homeostasis) and neurobehavioral (i.e., elevated impulsivity) dysfunctions characteristic of individuals with cannabis use disorder (CUD) and Bipolar Disorder (BD), using a medication that has been shown to increase cortical GABA (i.e., gabapentin) levels in past research, and to evaluate medication-related changes in response inhibition (go no-go) and cannabis cue reactivity functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging tasks, as well as cannabis use, mood symptoms (including anxiety and sleep), and impulsivity in individuals with CUD+BD.
The aim of this study is to detect P53 expression in clinically normal oral mucosa of cigarette smokers, simultaneous cigarette and cannabis smokers and non-smokers as a surrogate marker for field cancerization.
This study will use a randomized controlled design to test whether 30 days of cannabis abstinence, compared to 30 days of monitoring, is associated with improvements in cognitive functioning. Non-using controls will also be enrolled to determine the clinical significance of any cognitive improvements with abstinence.
The purpose of this pilot research study is to test whether certain components of the marijuana plant, known as "cannabinoids", may help to reduce symptoms in patients with OCD. Specifically, patients enrolled in the study will smoke marijuana containing different concentrations of 2 different cannabinoids, THC and CBD. Both of these agents act on the brain's "endocannabinoid system," which has been hypothesized to play a role in OCD. Neither compound is currently FDA-approved for treating OCD.
The study will examine how medical cannabis use affects opioid analgesic use over time, with particular attention to THC/CBD content, HIV outcomes, and severe adverse events.
In this study, the investigators are interested in testing how lorcaserin influences the effects of cannabis in a human laboratory model of cannabis use.
Despite the prevalence of cannabis use among the PTSD population and self-reports that it is used to help cope with PTSD symptoms, the direct effects of cannabis on PTSD symptomology are unknown. The purpose of this placebo-controlled, within-subject study is to assess the effects of smoked cannabis and orally administered nabilone, a synthetic analog of THC, the primary psychoactive component of cannabis on multiple dimensions of PTSD symptomatology in cannabis smokers with PTSD.
For many individuals with Tourette syndrome (TS), available medications do not help with their symptoms, or cause significant side effects. Two small controlled trials have investigated the effect of oral delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a principal psychoactive ingredient of cannabis, in TS patients. While these trials have shown promising results, the effect sizes were not as large and consistent as those reported by patients with regards to inhaled cannabis (smoked or vaporized). Indeed, based on anecdotal evidence, patients have much greater improvement in their symptoms using inhaled cannabis than using cannabinoid pharmaceuticals. However, there have been no controlled trials of inhaled medical cannabis for TS to date. Furthermore, various medical cannabis products are authorized in Canada with different contents of THC and cannabidiol (CBD), another primary cannabinoid. No data exists regarding the dosing, efficacy and safety of these products in the treatment of TS. To gather such data, a double-blind, randomized, crossover pilot trial will be conducted to compare the efficacy and safety of three vaporized medical cannabis products with different THC and CBD contents, as well as placebo, in adults with TS. As well, the PK/PD profile of THC and CBD of the products will be assessed and correlated with tic symptoms
Cannabinoids are known to increase appetite, but THC components have psychogenic properties too. CBD is the main component in the plant, and have only minimal psychogenic effects. The aim was to test the appetite stimulating effects of CBD in patients with pancreatic cancer in palliative treatment.
Study Objectives: Primary reduction of pain and reduction in overall opioid utilization. Secondary improvement in overall patient well being, weight stabilization with increased appetite, improved oxygen saturation, improvement or prevention of nausea and vomiting. Study Rationale: To determine optimum use and dosing of medical marijuana (CBD:THC) for pain and symptom management. Study Population: This study specifically will enroll cancer and non-cancer patients as a primary diagnosis suffering from pain and having a terminal illness (defined as having less than 6 months to live) requiring end of life care.
