Genetic Susceptibility to Radiation-Induced Skin Reactions in Racial/Ethnic Groups of Patients With Breast Cancer

RATIONALE: Radiation therapy uses high-energy x rays to kill tumor cells. Radiation therapy may cause skin reactions when patients are exposed to high-energy x rays. Studying the genetic pattern of patients before and after radiation therapy may help doctors prevent toxicity and plan the best treatment. PURPOSE: This clinical trial studies genetic susceptibility to radiation-induced skin reactions in racial/ethnic groups of patients with breast cancer.

Recovery and Rehabilitation After Lung Cancer Surgery

The specific aims of this translational, interdisciplinary, multi-center, international research study with 300 Lung cancer patients are to: Aim 1 Explore how the patients experience the transfer between different locations and between different levels of care at the same location and how they experienced coming home. Aim 2 Explore lung cancer patients' symptoms, symptom clusters, and changes in symptoms and symptom clusters over time. Aim 3 Explore interaction between lung cancers patients' symptoms, symptom clusters, health related quality of life and social support.

Bystander Fatigue and CPR Quality Using Continuous Compressions Versus 30:2 Compressions to Ventilation

STUDY OBJECTIVES The overall goal of this study is to compare bystander fatigue and CPR quality after 5 minutes of continuous chest compressions versus the 2005 30:2 chest compression to ventilation Resuscitation Guidelines, in a population aged 55 or greater. More specifically, the investigators will compare each CPR ratio with regard to: 1. The achieved frequency and depth of chest compressions, and 2. Participant rating of their perceived level of exertion. STUDY HYPOTHESIS In a population aged 55 or greater, the new CPR recommendations will lead to: 1. less frequent and shallower chest compressions over the 5-minute study period; and 2. higher rating of perceived level of exertion when compared to the 2005 30:2 CPR ratio.

Fatigability of the Quadriceps Muscle in Non-cooperating Subjects

As the critical care practice has improved over the last decades more patients are recovering from intensive care therapy. However, muscle atrophy and neuromuscular dysfunction are commonly observed sequelae after critical illness and are thought to play important roles in the development of intensive care unit acquired weakness (ICUAW). As a consequence, these entities may contribute to the impaired physical function and prolonged convalescence reported by ICU patients up to twelve months after discharge. Thus, strategies to counteract muscle atrophy and neuromuscular dysfunction acquired during the ICU stay may therefore potentially improve physical outcome and reduce the overall burden of critical illness. Limited information is available on muscle function in ICU patients and to our knowledge no muscle stimulation methods are currently available for evaluating muscle fatigue in large, proximal muscles groups, such as m. quadriceps, in non-cooperating ICU patients.
