Filter by:Fatigue is one of the most common and debilitating symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Exercise is suggested as a way to improve fatigue, but it is not clear what the effects of exercise are on fatigue - especially in people with progressive MS. Therefore, this study aims to test the feasibility of a tailored exercise programme to help improve fatigue in people with progressive MS. To do this people with progressive MS who are experiencing fatigue will be randomly allocated to receive either a tailored exercise programme, a standard exercise programme, or their usual care. Both exercise programmes will be 8 weeks long and require participants to attend Falkirk Community Hospital twice a week. The standard exercise programme involves a moderate intensity interval training session using a stationary exercise bike. The tailored exercise programme is similar to the standard exercise programme, as participants will be prescribed the same type and duration of exercise; however, the difference between the 2 programmes is that the intensity of exercise performed during each session of the tailored exercise programme is dictated by the participant's level of fatigue. Participants will complete an exercise test, walking test, and questionnaires relating to fatigue, quality of life, depression and anxiety, sleep quality, and cognition before and 1 week after completing the exercise programme.
This is a large randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to determine the efficacy of testosterone replacement on cancer-related fatigue in older men with solid or hematologic (blood) cancer who report fatigue and have low testosterone levels.
Post-stroke fatigue is highly prevalent and disabling. However, its causes and consequences in the chronic phase are not fully understood. The aim of this cross-sectional study is to explore functional correlates of post-stroke fatigue in the chronic phase.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether MS patients who receive Oral mitoquinone (MitoQ) have less fatigue than those receiving a placebo. A comparison between patient's fatigue scored at baseline and fatigue scored 12 weeks after drug initiation will assess if MitoQ has a significant change in fatigue.
This research study is evaluating the effects of two training programs (1. Walking, 2. Mindfulness and Self-compassion focussed Walking) on tumor-specific symptoms of fatigue in women with breast cancer undergoing chemo- and/or radiotherapy.
Randomized controlled trial in which two different laparoscopic systems: standard 2D and Olympus VISERA Elite II 3D will be compared in terms of laparoscopic skills, length of surgery, intraoperative complications and surgeon's fatigue in a group of senior surgeons and senior residents will be measured when performing laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
Chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a severe medical condition. It is characterized by long term fatique and other persisted symptoms, such as a cognitive disabilities and orthostatic intolerance. Symptoms limit a persons ability to carry out ordinary daily activities. In ICD- 10, disease is known as G93.3, postviral fatigue syndrome. The purpose of this research (doctoral study) is to produce a health psychological group intervention for patients with ME/CFS. Research protocol: 70-80 patients with diagnosis G 93.3. Psychological and psychiatric evaluation for patients (SCID I and parts from SCID II). Depression diagnosis is allowed (on remission). Medication for depression is also allowed. Measurements for ortostatic intolerance (Somnotouch nimbTM) and laboratory measurements: complete blood count, CRP, alkaline phosphatase, GT, ALAT, CK, bilirubin, kidney and thyroid (TSH, T4V) function tests, serum ferritin, glucose, electrolytes and daily urine sodium excretion. Autonomic nervous system ganglio antibodies: Anti-AT1R- Antibodies, Anti- ETAR- Antibodies, anti alpha-1 adrenergic Receptor Antibodies, anti alpha 2 adrenergic Receptor Antibodies, anti beta-1 adrenergic Receptor Antibodies, anti beta-2-adrenergic Receptor Antibodies, anti- Muscarinic Cholinergic Receptor 1 (M1)- Antibodies, anti- Muscarinic Cholinergic Receptor 2 (M2)- Antibodies, anti- Muscarinic Cholinergic Receptor 3 (M3)- Antibodies, anti- Muscarinic Cholinergic Receptor 4 (M4)- Antibodies, anti- Muscarinic Cholinergic Receptor 5 (M5)- Antibodies.
With the therapeutic tool of carcinoma increasing, life span extending, the solicitude for the patients'quality of life appear more important. Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is one of the most prevalent and debilitating symptoms experienced by people with cancer. It can persist for months or years after cancer therapy is completed and has a negative impact on all areas of function. Meaningful evidence-based treatment options for CRF are extremely limited and finding safe, inexpensive, and effective interventions for managing this distressing symptom are urgently needed. Our previous clinical experience have shown that traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) had a great effect on improving CRF, Several studies proven that its'mechanism were related to the regulation of immune function and endocrine hormones. Fufang E'Jiao Jiang (FFEJJICRF) is a commonly-used Chinese patent medicine and successfully marketed in China for many years, which are effective in improvement for TCM symptoms of deficiency with qi and blood. This proposal will investigate the effects of FFEJJICRF on CRF among non-small cell lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and gastric cancer, so as to find a new way for curing it in clinical.
Background: Many people experience fatigue as a side effect of their illnesses and treatments. There are no medicines to treat fatigue, but a drug called ketamine has reduced fatigue in depressed people. Researchers hope that ketamine, compared to a drug called midazolam, can reduce fatigue in people with illnesses. Objective: To test whether ketamine reduces fatigue in cancer survivors and people with chronic illness. Eligibility: Adults between the ages of 18 and 70 who have fatigue and are cancer survivors or have been diagnosed with a chronic illness such as chronic fatigue syndrome and lupus. Design: Participants will be screened with a physical exam, medical history, blood and urine tests, questions about their fatigue, and breathalyzer test. During phase 1, participants will complete rating their fatigue using questionnaires. They will be provided thinking, memory, and motivation tests. They will also take a handgrip test. For this study, the participant will have an IV, which a needle guides a thin plastic tube (intravenous or IV line) into an arm in their vein. An IV will be required for two of the visits. They will get a single dose of either ketamine or midazolam through an IV line over 40 minutes. Participants must be accompanied by a responsible friend/family/colleague to take them home after getting the study drug. Participants will have follow-up visits where they repeat the above tests. They will also have follow-up phone calls. Phase 2 is the same as phase 1, but participants get the other study drug. The study lasts 1 month. Each phase lasts 2 weeks. Participants will have 6-8 total NIH visits. For the whole study, they will wear a device on their wrists that records physical activity. Drug side effects can include vivid dreams, seeing colors, perceiving time as moving slower or faster than normal, dizziness, headache, restlessness, nausea, or vomiting, among others.
This study is based on the assumption that muscle strength and muscle mass will be better preserved in an "intervention" group with specific management combining retraining and nutritional monitoring compared to the "no intervention" group and that this will be positive consequences for fatigue and quality of life. In addition, this project is also based on the assumption that these gains will be at least partially preserved 3 months after the end of specific care.
