Improvement Of Physical And Physiological Parameters In Menopausal Or Post-Menopausal Celiac Women

Celiac disease (CD) is an immunological disorder that mainly affects the small intestine, generating an inflammatory process in response to the presence of gluten (a protein). Autoimmune diseases are part of a group of diseases that are difficult to diagnose without a specific protocol or consensus to detect them due to the number of symptoms and diseases with which it has a relationship. The incidence of CD in Spain -according to data from the rest of the European Economic Community, since there is no study on incidence in Spain- is assumed to be approximately 1 per 100 live births. It is more frequent in women, with a 2:1 ratio. The only treatment consists of a STRICT GLUTEN-FREE DIET FOR LIFE. This results in the disappearance of symptoms, normalization of serology and recovery of intestinal villi. Failure to follow the diet can lead to important complications which, especially in adulthood, can manifest themselves in the form of osteopenia, osteoporosis and a high risk of neoplasms in the digestive tract, mainly. The main objective is to achieve a physical and physiological improvement in menopausal or post-menopausal celiac women. The specific objectives will be to know the influence of a dietary-nutritional program combined with physical exercise in menopausal or post-menopausal celiac women on: - Physical condition (strength, endurance, functional autonomy...). - Body composition. - Psychological aspects. - Physiological parameters (heart rate, maximum oxygen consumption, blood analysis...).

Effect of Hypoxic Conditioning on Cerebrovascular Health in the Elderly

In line with the ever-growing aging of Western populations, the development of preventive strategies to slow down the effects of aging on cardiovascular health represents a major challenge in order to preserve functional capacities and a sufficient quality of life in the elderly. The alteration of vascular function (at the cerebral and systemic level) with aging is an important feature in the clinical picture including a decrease in physical and cognitive capacities. Although physical activity is recognized as an essential means of combating the effects of aging, optimizing its effects by defining the most effective strategies of practice remains a key objective. Offering alternative interventions to exercise training is also necessary for people who are unwilling or unable to engage in a physical activity program. In this context, hypoxic conditioning, alone or in conjunction with rehabilitative exercise training, is a new therapeutic modality with strong preclinical validity, in particular from a cardiovascular standpoint, and used in other pathologies to improve cardiovascular function and exercise performance and quality of life. Our aim is, therefore, to investigate the effect of hypoxic conditioning (alone or in conjunction with exercise training) on cerebrovascular health in the elderly.

Pregnant Elite Athletes and Pregnant Women Exercising With Moderate Intensity

The aim of this study is to 1. register possible changes to uteroplacental circulation in relation to physical tests, 2. to register energy and nutritional intake, relationship towards the body during pregnancy and during the early period after giving birth, 3. register the experience of guidance given related to exercise, nutrition, and recovery, 4. register elite athletes' experience of combining the role of being a mom and an elite athlete, and 5. register attitudes and reactions from the support system when it comes to being an elite athlete and being pregnant. Material and method: 30 pregnant female elite athletes and 30 moderately physically active pregnant women will be recruited for the completion of physical testing and questionnaires and questionnaires only, respectively. 20 national team leaders/coaches and 10 sponsors will be recruited for a semi-structured interview about attitudes, reactions and guidance towards athletes who become pregnant and still wish to continue their career as an athlete after pregnancy.

Rehabilitation Program in Patients With Scleroderma

Scleroderma (or Systemic Sclerosis - SSc) is one of the most neglected diseases worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. In the adult population with SS, the systemic effects of the disease, such as respiratory and peripheral muscle dysfunction, cause a decrease in quality of life. As a consequence, there is a concern about functional rehabilitation, since the aging of this population is already a reality. Thus, the objective of this project is to evaluate the effects of functional rehabilitation on functional capacity and quality of life in women over 18 years of SS. In this longitudinal intervention study, patients will be submitted to a three-month rehabilitation program. Before and after the intervention, patients will be submitted to the following assessments: Cochin Hand Functional Scale (CHFS), Short-Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36); Scleroderma Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index (SHAQ-DI); lung function; lung ultrasound; handgrip; Glittre Activities of Daily Living test. Thus, it is expected that patients with SS will benefit significantly, with a consequent improvement in musculoskeletal function and , functional capacity and health-related quality of life.

Effect of Walking Exercise Training on Adherence to Disease Management and Metabolic Control in Diabetes

This study aims to determine the effects of a transtheoretical model-based walking exercise training and disease management and metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. This randomized controlled trial will be conducted as a pre-test and post-test experiment with 30 intervention and 30 control individuals. The intervention group will receive the transtheoretical model-based exercise training. The intervention group will be followed-up for 6 months (from 0 to 6 months) to determine the patients' behavioral changes after the training will be completed.

Enhancing Skeletal Adaptations to PTH and Exercise

Exercise is essential for building and maintaining bone mass and strength, but current exercise recommendations for how to achieve this lack detail on the optimal exercise prescription. Recent studies found that blood calcium level decreases during exercise, and that calcium is mobilized from bone to slow the decline. If this occurs repeatedly during exercise training, it could diminish the potential benefits of exercise to improve bone health. The proposed study will determine whether further research on pre-exercise supplemental calcium to minimize the decline in blood calcium level during exercise is warranted. This research is important for Veterans because they are at increased risk of hip fracture when compared with non-Veterans. Further, because osteoporosis in men is under-recognized and under-treated, providing male (and female) Veterans with more specific exercise and nutrition guidelines has the potential to enhance bone health, reduce fracture risk, and improve quality of life.

RCT to Analyze the Efficacy of a Spanish Healthcare ministRy Based In InTervention to Reduce Frailty Status in Prefrail Older Adults

Objectives: The main objective is to analyze the efficacy of an intervention based on the algorithm proposed by the Spanish Healtcare Ministry (see figure in annex 1) at Primary Care level to reduce Frailty status in community-dwelling older adults. Secondary objectives are: 1. To analyze if the intervention is cost-effective; 2. To analyze if the intervention reduces hospitalizations and emergency department visits, incident disability, falls, institutionalization, mortality, Primary Care visits and Drug use, and improves quality of life. MethodologOy: Multicentric Randomized Clinical Trial in 164 Prefrail or Frail community-dwelling women and men with an age equal or greater to 70 years, attended in selected Primary Care centers of Spain (Albacete, Oviedo, Getafe and Madrid). Randomization will be made by clusters, being every cluster a different Primary Care center in order to avoid contamination. Randomization on a 1:1 relationship between groups. The main outcome variable will be Frailty status change at one year follow-up measured with the Frailty Phenotype. All instrumentation will follow the guidelines of the Spanish Healthcare Ministry algorithm for frailty, and gait speed will be measured with the Walkway Speed-Age. Intervention will consist on a groupal multicomponent physical exercise program and a nutritional intervention. The exercise program and nutrition will be delivered by trained experts in groups of 6 participants, and will be based on the recommendations of the Spanish Healthcare Ministry document.
