Filter by:Dietary pulses, more commonly known as "legumes", are generally recognized as healthy components of the diet. Canada's Food Guide encourages consumptions of meat alternatives, such as beans "more often"; and the dietary guidelines for Americans both recommend consumption of 3 cups of legumes per week. However, there still remain insufficient information on the usefulness of these foods in protecting heart health. To improve evidence-based guidance for non-oil-seed pulse recommendations, the investigators propose to conduct a systematic review of clinical studies to assess the effect of eating pulses in exchange for other foods on measures of heart disease risk and blood sugar control in humans. The systematic review process allows the combining of the results from many small studies in order to arrive at a pooled estimate, similar to a weighted average, of the true effect. The investigators will be able to explore whether eating pulses has different effects between men and women, in different age groups, in people with high or normal sugar or blood fat levels, and whether or not the effect of pulses depends on how much/often they are eaten. The findings of this proposed knowledge synthesis will help improve the health of Canadians through informing recommendations for the general public, as well as those at risk of heart disease and diabetes.
This study will evaluate and compare the effectiveness of MK-0653 (Vytorin) to current standard treatment with other statins for the treatment of dyslipidemia in moderate, moderately-high and high-risk participants.
Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of death and disability in adults. However, investigations suggest that the basic pathology of heart disease as more severe myocardial infarction which usually reach mainly middle-aged or above, starts from childhood. Hypercholesterolemia is one of the most important risk factors for atherosclerosis in adults and children, is associated with early deposition of lipids in the aorta and coronary arteries. Among other recommendations for prevention and treatment of heart disease and risk factors, is the recommendation to encourage the intake of soluble fiber. The oats, a major source of soluble fiber, has been recognized as a potential component of the diet to lower blood cholesterol levels, this effect is attributed mainly to the beta-glucan, a type of soluble fiber present in large quantities in oats. In 1997 the Food and Drug Administration admitted that the oat bran, oat flakes and oatmeal may have beneficial effects for health with the recommendation of daily intake of 3g of beta-glucan from oats and a food that brings a claim for promotion health, must provide, without enrichment, at least 1 gram of beta-glucan per serving. The objective of this project will be compared by randomized clinical trial, the impact of intake of oats, for 8 weeks in the lipid profile of children and adolescents with dyslipidemia. Will be included in the study 120 volunteers aged between 5 and 16 years who are in nutritional monitoring for at least 1 month. The subjects will be randomly divided into 2 groups, with a control group and another intervention will receive 3 tablespoons of soup filled with oat bran, which corresponds to 3g of beta-glucan, along with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Patients will be monitored with consultations on the 2nd, 4th and 8th weeks of treatment. Blood sample will be performed, to obtain the lipid profile of patients, at the beginning and end of the study. To compare the groups are used Student's t and squared chi. The alpha of 0.05 is considered critical. The program will be used Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 15.0. It is expected a decrease in serum levels of total cholesterol and LDL-c. Thus, living habits and healthy alternatives to prevent these risk factors should be done since childhood, especially in children who already have cholesterol levels of change.
Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the cause of one-third of all deaths in Canada. One important risk factor for CVD is dyslipidemia. The Canadian Health Measures survey, which was conducted from 2007-2009, found that roughly 36% of Canadians had unhealthy levels of LDL. Despite strong evidence and clear practice guidelines for the management of this risk factor, it remains poorly treated. Pharmacists are front-line primary care professionals who see patients at risk for cardiovascular disease more frequently than other healthcare professionals. As such, pharmacists have the opportunity to systematically and proactively identify patients with undertreated dyslipidemia, as one public health approach to chronic disease management. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of enhanced pharmacist care (i.e., participant identification, assessment, care plan development, education/counseling, prescribing/titration of lipid-lowering medications and close follow-up) on the proportion of participants achieving target LDL-cholesterol levels. Hypothesis: Enhanced pharmacist care will result in a more significant decrease in LDL-c levels, than that observed in the usual care patients. Design: This is a randomized controlled trial of enhanced pharmacist care. The study will be conducted in twelve community pharmacies in Alberta, including several Safeway Pharmacies. The participant population will be composed of adults with uncontrolled dyslipidemia as defined by the 2009 Canadian Dyslipidemia Guidelines. The primary intervention will be pharmacist directed dyslipidemia care. Participants randomized to usual care will receive usual care from their pharmacist and physician. Study Implications: To the investigators knowledge, this study is the first randomized trial of pharmacist prescribing in dyslipidemia. This study will have important implications for improving patients' access to care, especially as most provinces are proceeding with granting additional prescribing authority to pharmacists. The ability to conduct this study in a province where pharmacists already have the ability to prescribe is unique. The results will also encourage more pharmacists to get involved in cardiovascular prevention and will increase the number of prescribers in the area of dyslipidemia.
This study intends to determine the effects of genetic polymorphisms on statin response and daily systemic exposure (24-hour area under the time-concentration curve) of statins in African-American patients.
The study intends to investigate whether genetics influence how individuals respond to statins (clinical outcomes and changes in carotid intimal media thickness)
In this study the investigators wish to compare Very Low-Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) kinetics in type 2 diabetic males and healthy males postabsorptive and during hyperinsulinemia. The kinetics is obtained using an ex-vivo VLDL1- and VLDL2-triglyceride labeling technique. The investigators hypothesis is that the investigators will find an increased VLDL1 production in type 2 diabetic males, which is not lowered by hyperinsulinemia. Also the investigators wish to investigate the influence of diet on VLDL1 and VLDL2 production in healthy males, where the investigators expect less variance in VLDL production when the subject is given an isocaloric diet.
Rationale: Extracts of the plant Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen) have been used as traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, such as angina pectoris and myocardial infarction. Several preclinical studies point towards promising effects of Danshen on risk factors of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, such as hyperlipidemia and hypertension. Objective: Our primary objective is to determine the effect of Salvia miltiorrhiza extract (Danshen) on hyperlipidemia. Secondary objective is to investigate the effect of Danshen on hypertension. Further objectives are to determine its effect on endothelial function, oxidative stress, inflammation, hemostasis and hemorheology, and on insulin sensitivity.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether hepatic de novo lipogenesis (DNL) in response to the ingestion of a mixture of glucose and fructose is greater in South Asians compared to controls (Caucasians).
Increased postprandial lipemia may increase the risk for cardiovascular diseases. An important mechanistic link between lipemia following a high-fat meal and adverse cardiovascular events is lipid-mediated endothelial activation. Therefore, it is important to identify nutrients that can neutralize this acute vascular disturbance. The investigators hypothesize that beetroot juice, a food rich in inorganic nitrate, could improve vascular activity during the postprandial phase.
