Filter by:A short term trauma-focused cognitive- behavioral program to reduce trauma-related mental health problems among asylum-seeking and refugee children. The main hypothesis of the study is that the TRT program significantly improves mental health (i.e. reduces symptoms of post-traumatic symptoms, depression and generalized anxiety and increases perceived quality of life (Qol) in the intervention group compared to the waiting-list control group.
This is a smoking cessation study that will enroll smokers who have been diagnosed with a severe mental illness. The study will use a combination of intensive tobacco treatment counseling and nicotine replacement therapy to assist smokers in cutting back on and quitting smoking over the course of six months.
Experimental fear in rodents is correlated with slow oscillations in electrical recordings of prefrontal cortex activities. The present study aims to test whether slow prefrontal oscillations is a biomarker of pathological anxiety in human subjects.
Feeding problems are common in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).This study was planned to investigate the effect of occupational theraphy on sensory feeding problems in ASD.
Approximately 50 participants will be enrolled and screened to achieve 45 eligible patients with mood/anxiety disorders to complete a 10 weekly anti-stigma group intervention (ASGI) in addition to several self-report internalized stigma and psychiatric measures. This study will examine changes in internalized stigma and psychiatric symptoms pre- and post-ASGI with 3 months post-intervention follow-up.
Analyze, describe, and understand how the human gut microbiome (i.e. bacteriome and mycobiome) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are related.
After an initial phone screen process, approximately 50 participants will be enrolled and evaluated/screened in person after consenting to achieve 30 eligible participants with a principal diagnosis of GAD, panic disorder, or social anxiety disorder and high anxiety sensitivity (Anxiety Sensitivity Index score =20). Participants will be given a choice of either high intensity interval training (HIIT) or walking interventions, which will be completed over the course of 8 weeks. The goal of the study is to 1) obtain pilot data comparing the efficacy of HIIT vs. walking for effects on psychiatric, functioning and immune outcomes, 2) to identify adherence levels given the choice of exercise intensity, and 3) to identify proportion of individuals opting for each intervention. Results from this pilot study will be used to inform future grant applications including a K award.
Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders (NMOSD) are a group of inflammatory demyelinating disorders of the central nervous system. Although NMOSD occurs much more commonly in nations with a predominately non-Caucasian population, NMOSD are underestimated in Egypt and frequently misdiagnosed as multiple sclerosis (MS). In this study, by investigating serum anti-aquaporin (AQP) 4 and anti-MOG antibody of patients suspected to have NMOSD attending the Neurology and Psychiatry department of Assiut University Hospital, investigators aim to determine the relative frequency, clinical and radiological characteristics of NMOSD in upper Egypt community and compare it with other populations of different races.
This study evaluated the use of bergamot aromatherapy in the treatment of anxiety in a medical office setting among children who are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. H
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common developmental disorders experienced in childhood, with limited options for effective pharmacological treatment. Transcendental Meditation (TM) has been proposed to be used as a tool for attentional training and modulating autonomic nervous system activity in the ADHD population. However, the empirical support in favor of meditation for ADHD is limited, and the mechanism by which TM may have an effect on ADD/ADHD is not understood. There is also a conflicted data as to the nature of autonomic dysregulation of ADHD. Heart Rate Variability (HRV) represents the beat to beat changes of heart rate in the interbeat interval, and considered to be a non-invasive tool to study autonomic nervous system. There is evidence that a non-directive meditation may increase parasympathetic activity and overall HRV. To the best of our knowledge, the differential effect of meditation on ADHD symptoms: according to the baseline HRV of the participants, or ADHD subtypes has not been assessed. The aim of this study is to collect the data on ADHD adolescents who will get TM training as a part of out-of-school program, which is offered all children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, aged 11.5 y-16y, in the community center of Kadima-Zoran, Israel. The assessment of all of the children participating in this program will be performed with the help of validated questionnaires for diagnosis and follow-up of ADD/ADHD, and HRV monitoring. In order to perform an assessment in a controlled way, the instruction of TM shall take place in two cycles of 3 months each.
