Filter by:Cardiovascular disease (CVD), chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes mellitus (DM) and HIV infection are long-term conditions (LTC) with major health implications for people of African ancestry. These LTC often arise in the setting of an adverse demographic, social, biologic and genetic environment, although this remains poorly understood. The investigators plan to conduct a comprehensive syndemic evaluation in individuals with and without CVD, CKD and DM in people of African ancestry with HIV to obtain novel insights into the development of LTC in this population. In addition, the investigators will conduct focus groups to explore the role of syndemic factors in the development of LTC and develop and pilot an educational programme to improve knowledge about LTC in the African/Caribbean community.
Intraocular pressure (IOP) is maintained by a balance between aqueous production and outflow with an imbalance leading to elevated eye pressure. Very high levels of IOP will subject retinal cells to mechanical stress. In addition to mechanical injury, IOP elevation can impair ocular blood flow reducing perfusion pressure to retinal neurons. Long-term vascular and mechanical stresses can produce further injury at the optic nerve. Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) or ocular hypertension (OHT) is the only well-established modifiable risk factor for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), the most common form of glaucoma. Glaucoma is a class of optic neuropathy. It is main leading cause of blindness. Glaucoma is classified on the basis of anatomic features as open angle (where the anterior chamber angle of the eye remains open) and angle-closure (with closure of the anterior chamber angle). Glaucoma is considered primary if the eye has no preexisting disease. Secondary forms of glaucoma are caused by various ocular or systemic diseases such as pigment dispersion syndrome and ocular trauma. It seems reasonable to consider that a longer duration of diabetes mellitus (DM) with a prolonged insult to the retina and optic nerve via vascular, glial, and neuronal factors would be associated with a higher risk of OAG.
The purpose of this study is to examine whether substituting sitting with standing and light-intensity activity in free-living conditions can reduce glycaemia in overweight/obese South Asian adults.

The Bialystok Bariatric Surgery Study (BBSS) is a prospective observational cohort study of patients undergoing bariatric surgery at the First Clinical Department of General and Endocrine Surgery at the Medical University of Bialystok. The BBSS consists of a battery of baseline tests established one month prior to the surgery and repeated at one, three, six, twelve and twenty four-month follow-up clinical visits.
The T1D Exchange Registry is a research study, conducted over time, for individuals with type 1 diabetes and their supporters. Participants volunteer to provide their data for research (for example, by answering questions in annual surveys). Once enrolled, Registry participants have the opportunity to sign up for other studies on various topics related to type 1 diabetes. To participate, you will be asked to: - Read and sign an online informed consent form - Take a survey describing specific demographic and type 1 diabetes management information - Update your information annually - Periodically opt in for additional research opportunities (if you choose), i.e. taking new surveys or uploading health device data
This study aimed to compare intravitreous conbercept alone with conbercept plus intravitreous triamcinolone acetonide in DME eyes which showed limited response to anti-VEGF treatment after one injection.
Proven therapy for DKD is primarily limited to RAAS blockers and SLGT2i. Weight reduction has the potential to become an additional and much needed treatment option. Of all the weight reduction strategies metabolic surgery is suited to be the most effective. Yet no study has of yet compared the effect of metabolic surgery against best medical treatment on the progression of DKD. This pilot trial is designed to be the first determine the efficacy of metabolic surgery in slowing progression of DKD as compared to best medical therapy. The study design will address all the major limitations previously documented, including the major dilemma of estimating versus measuring GFR. Of note, the study's design will allow its sample size to be adjusted upward using an adaptive design if necessary, to achieve statistical significance. It will also inform study design and sample size issues for all future studies in this field. The payoff of establishing metabolic surgery as a new and effective intervention to slow progression to ESRD would be great in terms of reducing patient suffering and societal costs. This will be an open-label, randomized trial involving sixty (60) patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and obesity who will undergo Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) in the intervention arm or receive best medical treatment (BMT) in the control arm. The aim of this prospective, open, randomized study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of RYGB surgery versus best medical treatment on the progression of DKD in patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity.
The overall aim of the study is to evaluate a digital lifestyle intervention that has been developed in an academic setting at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. The tool is based on self-affirmation theory and has large emphasis on self-reflection to enable sustainable lifestyle changes. The effects of the tool on HbA1c, reflecting long-term blood glucose, will be evaluated in patients with type 2 diabetes. The study will contain two phases. The study consists of a three-month period in which participants are randomly assigned to usual care or access to the intervention tool, followed by an open-label three-year observation period during which participants have access to the tool in addition to ordinary healthcare and are compared with matched controls on usual care.
