Filter by:The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effect of sitagliptin on overall blood glucose concentrations in Type I Diabetic subjects. The study also aims to evaluate post meal glucagon concentrations in Type I Diabetic subjects (a possible mechanism of reduced blood glucose concentrations) and indices of oxidation stress in the plasma of these subjects.
The investigators want to try the psycho educational method "The Affect School with Script Analysis and the physiotherapeutic mind-body therapy "Basal Body Awareness Therapy in patients with diabetes, high HbA1c and psychological symptoms, in order to improve psychological health- with the primary outcome reduced depression. Secondary outcomes are improved improved glycemic control and self-image, and reduced alexithymia and anxiety.
This study will collect baseline survey data from a NCP funded VA Diabetes Prevention Program (VA DPP) clinical demonstration program at three medical centers on VA DPP participants and VA DPP-eligible VA MOVE! participants to identify baseline participant demographic characteristics; attitudes and beliefs about diet, exercise and weight loss, and psychosocial constructs such as social support; and self-regulation skills that predict 6-month weight loss and program attendance. The data collected will contribute to our knowledge of pre-diabetic Veterans' attitudes and beliefs about diet, exercise and weight loss, to our understanding of how different programs may impact weight loss, and to evidence-based targeting in future clinical implementation projects. It will also provide baseline quality of life data for use in a future cost-effectiveness analysis.
This multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 2 safety study will assess the effect of bardoxolone methyl relative to placebo on body weight and fat mass in approximately 60 patients with stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM).
Evaluation of the clinical benefits of One Touch VerioIQ system.
Diabetic foot ulcers often progresses after many years of diabetes where the patients system is so damaged that normal heeling of ulcers cannot happen. The physician at the clinic examines the foot, measuring its circulation and sensitivity. The measures are the blood pressure in comparison between foot and upper arm and oxygen level in the foot. The measurements have a direct connection to the blood circulation, but it doesn't visualize the blood circulation. Development of MR methods without the use of contrast agents have become so good that images of the blood veins can be used in treatment. This means that the MR images provide important information about the patient vessel wall stiffness and blood circulation without the use of the damaging substances. Hence the physician can perform the MR examination and in comparison with the test performed at the clinic he can make an improved and without risk diagnose. Using MR at a lot earlier stage in the treatment is expected to reduce the number of amputations. This is not only an economic advantage, but also an improvement of the patient quality of life. The objective of the study is to investigate type 1 diabetics oxygen level, vessel wall stiffness, blood circulation, tissue contribution and blood pressure in the foot with the use of conventional measurements in their treatment and with the added use of MR methods. This will provide the physician with valuable information of the patient illness and is expected to play an important role in the prevention of diabetic foot ulcers. We expect that MR research leads to a much improved prevention and treatment of aggressive and destructive diabetic foot ulcers. This will increase the general quality of life and reduce the large number of amputations performed every year.
Background: - Women can gain too much weight or develop diabetes during pregnancy. If the mother is overweight or has diabetes during pregnancy, her baby may also be at risk of being overweight or developing diabetes. A woman s chance of getting diabetes increases if her parents or family members are overweight or have diabetes. Poor diet and exercise habits can also lead to weight gain and diabetes. Researchers want to study how best to improve the health of pregnant women and their children. They will do so by providing healthy lifestyle counseling for women receiving prenatal care at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center. Objectives: - To study the effectiveness of healthy lifestyle counseling for overweight and/or diabetic pregnant women. Eligibility: - Women at least 18 years of age who will receive pregnancy care at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center. - Participants must be overweight or obese. They may or may not have diabetes. Design: - Participants will receive standard prenatal care from the midwives, doctors, and dietitians at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center. - Participants will work with National Institutes of Health staff for about 2 hours every week. These sessions may include phone calls, home visits, or group meetings. - Participants will have a total of nine measurement visits. The first visit will be at or before 16 weeks of pregnancy. The next three visits will be within a week of the first visit. Another four visits will take place between 23 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. - Participants will have different tests through their pregnancy. They will wear heart monitors and wrist monitors to measure heart rate and movement. They will provide information on their eating habits, physical activity, and mood and feelings during pregnancy. Blood samples will be collected to measure blood glucose (sugar) levels. - Participants will receive counseling on healthy eating and physical activity habits. They will be encouraged to invite friends or family members to learn more about healthy lifestyle choices. - The study will end with the final visit about 6 to 8 weeks after giving birth. A final blood sample will be collected. Participants will be asked questions about mood and feelings.
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas. This condition is very prevalent, affecting up to 1:400/500 persons worldwide. Type 1 diabetes, previously known as juvenile diabetes, usually strikes in childhood, adolescence, or young adulthood, but lasts for a lifetime. To date, there have been no treatments that can arrest or reverse the ongoing beta cell destruction. The patients affected by this disease require multiple daily insulin injections to manage their blood sugars and usually have trouble regulating their blood sugars. Moreover, they are at risk for heart disease, kidney failure, eye problems, and other complications from this life-long condition. The investigators plan to utilize gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) in children with newly diagnosed T1DM. This neurotransmitter is made in the brain from the amino acid glutamate with the aid of vitamin B6. There have been some recent studies in diabetic mice utilizing GABA to reverse inflammation on the pancreas and improve hyperglycemia. GABA studied in healthy human subjects demonstrated that large oral doses of GABA increased insulin secretion from the pancreas. The investigators propose that GABA given to children with new onset T1DM will be able to increase insulin production, suppress glucagon release, and decrease the inflammation surrounding the pancreas. The investigators hope this will at least prolong the beta cell life after diagnosis, if not lead to a cure for type 1 diabetes.

This is an open-label, multicenter, two-arm, parallel, randomized phase 4 study to compare the compliance in diabetes type 2 patients treated with Glucophage sachets versus patients treated with Glucophage tablets.
