Filter by:Intimate partner violence (IPV) is the most common and alarming form of violence against women, affecting up to 25% of all women in Catalonia. It is a complex phenomenon that involves aspects of social interaction, cognitive-emotional processes, neurobiological alterations and cultural context. Using an integrative methodology, IPV will be approached as a form of chronic exposure to severe stress that alters the stress-response system of exposed women, affecting their capacity to cope with future everyday situations. Fortunately, coping strategies can be subject to change through learning mechanisms and thus the identification of vulnerabilities can help build resilience strategies that may have a long-lasting impression on women's healthy functioning. It is proposed that the sustained exposure to violent social interactions impacts two key aspects of future behavior: i) altered psychosocial coping, and ii) enhanced emotional reactivity to acute stress. To test this hypothesis, the psychosocial and neurobiological response to common social acute stress will be analyzed among women with and without previous exposure to IPV. The Trier Social Stress Task (TSST) will be used, which is a valid test of acute stress that resembles the real life situation of a (mock) job interview. Based on a social neuroscience perspective, quantitative and qualitative measures will be used of cognitive performance, neuroendocrine activity and face-to-face interviews to obtain an integrative description of the response to the TSST that includes the personal narrative of the experience by women themselves. Finally, the proposal will benefit from the fact that all participants will share the same experimental condition (the TSST), and this mock job interview will be used as the common reference point for a workshop about the difficulties and strengths put to test during a stressful situation. The focus of this workshop will be on raising awareness of such coping limitations and abilities that participants themselves will be able to identify. The results of this workshop will inform guidelines and recommendations for future work and prevention strategies, and participants will be invited to be an active part in our dissemination strategy
Depression is a major handicap in daily life and is often treated by behavioral activation (CA), including the Brief Behavioral Activation Treatment for Depression (BATD).The CA principle is to set up activities, in keeping with the values of the individual. Other tools associated with the CA deserve to be explored as virtual reality (VR), which offers scenarios and sensations similar to real life and a sense of life. in a safe and controlled environment, with the support of the therapist.The main objective is to compare the effectiveness of the program "BATD with RV" versus "BATD without RV" on the intensity of the depressive symptomatology and CA in everyday life. Methodology: This is a randomized, blinded study. Inclusion criteria are: 18 to 70 years old; unipolar depression diagnosis; Showing a score of ≥ 17 on the BDI-II. 80 subjects will be recruited over 24 months and randomized into 2 groups: 1) intervention group program BATD in VR; 2) BATD program intervention group without RV, lasting 45 minutes. Judgment Criteria: The effectiveness of the intervention will be evaluated by the BDI-II scale and the Behavioral Activation for Depression Scale (BADS). Outcomes: A new management of depression (AC with RV) to improve the quality of life of the patient; proof of its effectiveness; a generalization of this care; and recognition of its effectiveness in the scientific community.
The major objective of this study is to evaluate a new conceptualized personalized concept of Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASPersonalized) in the treatment of patients with persistent depressive disorder (PDD), childhood maltreatment and a high rate of comorbidity. Patients receive a two-phase-treatment-program (six-weeks inpatient-treatment and six-to-twelve-weeks blended-online-aftercare) in combination with standardized pharmacotherapy in a routine clinical inpatient setting. This study addresses the primary research question: Is an intensive six-week inpatient CBASPersonalized treatment feasible and effective in a clinical sample of PDD patients? In addition, moderator, process and long-term analyses will be conducted for differential insights.
The objective of this study was to compare the therapeutic effects of Auricular Concha Electro-acupuncture and Citalopram on patients with major depressive disorder (MDD).
Depression is a common issue but there is no marker of response to an antidepressant treatment.The measurement of variation of the cortical excitability in responders to a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) (compared to no-responders) had never been done before. In the study of Robol et al. (2004) concerning the acute effects of citalopram on markers of cortical excitability, the authors have pointed out an increase on the cortical silent period (CSP) after administration of citalopram (2.5 hours). The investigators hypothesize that this effect remains later and that the diminution of cortical excitability could be a biomarker of antidepressant response. In this case, they expect that the variation of CSP between day 1 and day 28 is higher in responders to a SSRI (citalopram) compared to non-responders. the investigators lead a pilot, prospective, multicentric study in drug-naive patients to compare the variation of the markers of cortical excitability (the CSP but to the resting motor threshold RMT, the motor evoked potential MEP, the intra-cortical inhibition ICI and the intra-cortical facilitation ICF) between day 1 and day 28 in responders to citalopram, compared to non-responders.
During the past three decades, researchers have paid particular attention to the study of olfactory disorders in depression. Recent studies have shown that depression is characterized by a change in olfactory and emotional perception resulting in a decrease of the perception of positive stimuli (odors and facial expressions) and an increase in perception of negative stimuli (odors). Moreover, it has also been shown in healthy subjects that the presence of minor depressive symptoms leads to a decreasing of olfactory sensitivity. However, odor discrimination was not impaired in these subjects. This observation suggest the presence of a change in "targeted" olfactory perception in people with depressive symptoms without reporting major depression. In addition, studies in subjects with olfactory disorders (following respiratory tract infections or following Parkinson's disease) have shown an improvement in olfactory function after daily training with odors during 12 weeks. From all these observations, the hypothesis is that an olfactory training could improve the overall olfactory functioning and the emotional perception of the subjects presenting minor depressive symptoms and of the depressed patients.
This study aims to investigate the clinical efficacy of continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) on the right DLPFC as an add-on treatment in bipolar depression. The study consists of three phases. Phase 1: Bipolar depressed patients will be selected by a certified psychiatrist, who will administer (semi-)structured clinical interviews (M.I.N.I.-Plus 5.0.0, HRSD-17). The presence of exclusion criteria will be evaluated. Eligible patients will undergo MRI brain imaging for TMS neuronavigation Phase 2: Baseline clinical, cognitive and psychomotor assessments will take place. Patients will also undergo blood samples for laboratory and research assessments. TBS involves applying triple-pulse 50 Hz bursts given at a rate of 5 Hz uninterrupted trains (1). Patients will be treated with in total 20 continuous Theta Burst Stimulation (cTBS) session (900 pulses per session) over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which will be spread over 4 days. A stimulation intensity of 100% of the subject's resting motor threshold (rMT) of the right abductor pollicis brevis muscle will used. Patients will be randomized to receive either the real cTBS or sham treatment. Sham stimulation will be applied with a sham coil. The sham coil produces identical sounds but is not associated with a stimulus sensation compared to the coil delivering real stimulation cTBS. The investigators expect that real cTBS treatment and not sham will result in a significant and clinical meaningful response. Phase 3: Two post-treatment assessment moments will take place respectively 3 (max. 4) days and 10 (max. 11) days after the last treatment day. The assessments are the same clinical, cognitive and psychomotor assessments as in phase 2.
Severe mental illness (SMI) refers to the most burdensome psychiatric conditions. The need to pre-empt the onset of SMI is pressing because once SMI develops, quality of life is poor and available treatments have limited efficacy. Most risk factors for SMI are either unchangeable (e.g., genetics) or difficult to alter (e.g., low socio-economic status). In contrast, cannabis use is one specific risk factor that could be avoided. Certain individuals are more vulnerable to the harmful effects of cannabis. Genetic factors can help us identify these high-risk individuals. One in three individuals are carriers of a higher-risk genetic variant, and cannabis users with this genotype are at up to 7-fold increased risk of developing schizophrenia. In our study, genetic counselling will be provided to participants by a board-certified genetic counsellor. During the genetic counselling session, participants will have the option to receive their genotype. Participants will be counselled regarding their individualized risk of developing and of not developing SMI based on family history, whether or not they choose to use cannabis, and genotype (if the participants accept the genetic test results). The investigators hypothesize that this intervention will reduce exposure to cannabis compared to the youth who are not offered the intervention.
The purpose of this study is to validate the efficacy of Vortioxetine augmentation in bipolar disorder patients with depressive symptoms.
The primary objective of the study is to evaluate the clinical curative effect of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy(MBCT) for major depressive disorder(MDD). Moreover, we will also explore the relationship between P300 potential and erroneous negative potential (ERN) variation and clinical symptoms in MDD and MBCT. This study is a randomized-control trial with two study arms: half of patient cases will receive usual medication treatment with the serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and half of patient cases will receive MBCT added to the usual medication treatment. This study is also a case-control trial, there will be matched normal controls compared with patient cases through a range of psychological scales and electroencephalogram.
