TEWL Biomarker Study for Diabetic Foot Ulcer Recurrence

This is a multicenter study of patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) to develop and validate potential tissue-based biomarkers that predict DFU wound recurrence. Trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) will be measured on the closed wound site and a location similar to the wound site (reference site). Participants will be enrolled within two weeks after closure of their DFU. Complete wound healing will be verified at a second visit two weeks later and this visit will start the 16 week timeline where participants will be followed weekly by phone until the earliest of DFU wound recurrence or 16 weeks. Participants who experience a DFU wound recurrence and a subset of participants who do not experience a DFU wound recurrence by week 16 will be asked to attend one final visit.

Brief, Scaleable Intervention for Coronavirus (COVID-19) Mental Health Sequelae in College Students

The major aim of this pilot study is to evaluate a brief coping skills intervention for college students, based on an evidence-based treatment and delivered remotely via 14 short daily videos. Participants will be 150 Rutgers undergraduates who are enrolled in Fall 2020. Participants in the experimental group (n=100) will receive 4 daily smartphone surveys assessing stress, affect, and other related factors for two weeks before, during, and after the 2-week coping skills intervention. Participants in the control group (n=50) will receive assessments over the same time period with no skills intervention. Both groups will be assessed weekly throughout the Fall semester to monitor the transition to the new semester and longer-term impact of the intervention. The control condition participants will have access to the skills videos at the end of the study.

Renin and Renal Biomarker Response to Angiotensin II

Septic shock continues to exert a large economic burden around the world. Several developments have occurred that lead to the current study. First, angiotensin II is the newest FDA approved vasopressor agent indicated for use in vasodilatory shock. Several subgroups from the approval trial have indicated that angiotensin II may confer a survival benefit in certain conditions, including those patients requiring continuous renal replacement therapy, those with altered angiotensin I: angiotensin II ratios, and most recently, those with elevated renin levels (which may serve as a surrogate for dysfunctional angiotensin 1: angiotensin II ratios). This open-label, sequential period pilot study will evaluate angiotensin II and biomarker response (renin) in the treatment of septic shock.

Ghrelin (OXE--103) for Acute Concussion Management

Concussions are the leading form of mild traumatic brain injury. Management of concussions and mild traumatic brain injury is a high priority medical focus, social concern, and research topic. Currently, there are no FDA approved treatments for acute concussion. The current standard of care is rest followed by gradual return to normal activity. The purpose of this study is to show improvement in the way patients feel or function after a concussion. OXE-103 is a protein hormone produced in the laboratory which identical to the hormone ghrelin that is secreted by the stomach. This study will investigate the use of this hormone as treatment for symptoms of acute concussion. The goal of this study is to show improvement in the way study participants feel or function after concussion. An OXE-103 (ghrelin) agonist is already FDA approved for another condition, but not for concussion. For concussion, it is considered investigational. This study will examine, if ghrelin is taken every day for two weeks, if the brain will heal faster and help improve or resolve symptoms. The study will also include a placebo arm and a non-treatment group (for those who wish to participate but do not want to receive any treatment). The OXE-103 and placebo will be self-administered through injections using needles.

Hopewell Hospitalist is a theory-based adventure video game designed to increase the likelihood that a physician will engage in an advance care planning (ACP) conversation with a patient over the age of 65. Drawing on the theory of narrative engagement, players assume the persona of a hospitalist and navigate a series of clinical encounters with seriously-ill patients over the age of 65. Players experience the consequences of having (or not having) ACP conversations in a timely fashion. The planned study is a pragmatic stepped-wedge crossover phase III trial testing the efficacy of Hopewell Hospitalist for increasing ACP rates measured by ACP billing frequency.
