Pharmacological Modulation of Hippocampal Activity in Psychosis 2

The purpose of this study is to test whether administration of levetiracetam (LEV), a commonly used anti-epileptic that alters neurotransmitter release, can reduce hippocampal hyperactivity in people with psychotic disorders. Specifically, the investigators will utilize two functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques: 1) blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) contrast will assess activity with a visual scene processing task that engages the anterior hippocampus and 2) arterial spin labeling (ASL) will assess baseline activity. Previous studies in people with psychotic disorders have shown that the hippocampus is hyperactive and more activity correlates with worsening of clinical symptoms. Therefore, the aim of this study is to use an intervention to further understand the underlying mechanisms of the hippocampus in psychosis.

Nasal Irrigation to Reduce COVID-19 Morbidity

The purpose of this study is to evaluate if using nasal irrigation, also known as nasal lavage, for 14 days after a positive test in high risk patients can reduce the severity of symptoms associated with COVID-19. Nasal lavage consists of running salt water in one nostril and out the other to get rid of germs. Nasal irrigation was done with either Betadine or baking soda to determine if adding an antimicrobial or changing the pH of the mucous helped. Hospitalization and death were compared for combined nasal irrigation groups to the CDC dataset of patients aged 50+

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a relentlessly progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive weakness involving limb, bulbar, and respiratory muscles.There is currently no information suggesting how COVID-19 affects patients diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This is especially important as respiratory compromise is common in ALS patients and can complicate the clinical course as COVID-19 could lead to respiratory failure and need for intubation. We intend that this registry will guide our understanding of how COVID-19 affects patients with ALS.

The current paradigm of Type 2 Diabetes treatment relies heavily on expensive pharmacotherapy even though lifestyle factors are at the root of the condition. This study is designed to assess the feasibility of a low carbohydrate diet coupled with a time restricted feeding intervention to improve participant sensitivity, reducing their need for insulin. 20 participants will be invited to enroll from the 20 S Park St Clinic in Madison, WI and remain on study for up to 6 months.
