Acceptance and Mindfulness Based Exposure Therapy for Survivors of Cardiac Arrest

The primary goal of this uncontrolled pilot trial is to examine feasibility, acceptability, safety, and preliminary efficacy of a new behavioral treatment for survivors of sudden cardiac arrest with clinically elevated symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Participants will be recruited among cardiac arrest survivors enrolled in the observational CANOE research study (CUIMC IRB# AAAR8497). Study participants will be interviewed about their symptoms and evaluated for baseline assessment before receiving eight weekly sessions of an acceptance and mindfulness-based exposure therapy (AMBET). Participants will be additionally evaluated at treatment mid-point (week 4), and at the end of treatment. The treatment and all assessments will be conducted remotely via Zoom. To assess whether patients' physical activity is improved over the course of treatment, participants will be provided with a wearable device (Fitbit wristband) to monitor their physical activity. The specific aims of this study are to: (1) develop an acceptable protocol for an AMBET intervention for survivors of sudden cardiac arrest with elevated PTSD symptoms (2) examine its safety and feasibility in a small sample of 14 patients (3) investigate acceptability and feasibility of the assessments and measurements including physical activity.

Oral Pomegranate Extract on the Microbiome and Skin Biophysical Properties

Pomegranate extract (Pomella) is well known for its antioxidant properties due to its phenolic compounds. It has also been shown to increase the amount of short chain fatty acid producing Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria genera. Short chain fatty acids are thought to have an anti-inflammatory effect on the sebaceous glands. Previous studies have concluded that pomegranate extract may act as a prebiotic in the body and subsequently increasing the gastrointestinal microbial diversity and by producing short chain fatty acids that may have systemic beneficial effects especially on the skin. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess how Pomella alters the gut microbiome and the blood level of short chain fatty acids in healthy subjects.

SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Immune Surveillance Among a Population Based Sample of Adults in Florida

The overall goal of this study is to understand the immune response (IgG) to SARS-CoV-2 to fill critical knowledge gaps in the natural history of this virus and to inform the development of future infection mitigation efforts. The study team aims to assess the prevalence of circulating IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 and the factors associated with sero-prevalence. These data will be used to estimate the total population that has been exposed to the virus (asymptomatic and symptomatic), the proportion of the population that may be protected by natural immunity, and the proportion that is susceptible. Data obtained from this research will be shared with the Florida Department of Health.
