Intracervical Lidocaine Versus Intramuscular Diclofenac for Pain Relief in HSG in a Tertiary Hospital in Kano

This study compares the effect of intracervical block with 1% lidocaine and intramuscular diclofenac 75mg in decreasing pain perception during hysterosalpingography. Half of participants will receive intracervical block with 1% lidocaine, while the other half will receive intramuscular diclofenac 75mg.

A multi-centre, randomized, placebo controlled, trial. Participants at high-risk for vascular events from the network of INTER- CHF will be randomized to inactivated influenza vaccine or placebo and followed prospectively over three influenza seasons. 5,000 participants will be enrolled prior to influenza season, randomized to either influenza vaccine or saline placebo, either of which they will receive annually for three years and then followed over each of the influenza seasons.

Study of Personalized Dietary Intervention for the Control of Essential Hypertension

An ongoing case study of psoriasis, shows reproducibly that ingestion of hydrogenated fats, and some flavourant or sweetener compounds, leads to relapse of psoriasis, and secondary food intolerances, followed by remission over a couple of months (cpcpsoriasis.blogspot.com). Hence a personalized categorical food avoidance diet averts relapse and maintains remission of psoriasis, with side benefit on blood pressure and other metabolic parameters (J Hypertension 2012; 30: e-suppl 1, poster 158). Study hypothesis: this dietary approach would improve the control of essential hypertension. A randomized controlled clinical trial is proposed to compare this dietary approach with conventional DASH-type dietary counselling. 40 study participants will be randomly assigned to either conventional or interventional dietary counselling. They will be comprehensively monitored (including gene expression studies) for two years. Outcome criteria will include blood pressure, complications of hypertension, side-benefit on comorbidity, and requirement for antihypertensive drugs.

The study has two components: component A is a cohort study to determine the in vivo efficacy of SP to clear and prevent malaria parasitaemia in asymptomatic pregnant women and component B is a cross sectional study of women delivering at the study hospitals to assess the effectiveness of SP-IPTp to reduce adverse maternal and birth outcomes in the current context of increasing SP resistance. Results of component A and B studies will be used to model the relationship between the prevalence of molecular markers of SP resistance, in vivo efficacy to clear parasite and the effectiveness of SP-IPTp and to develop guidelines for routine monitoring effectiveness of SP-IPTp as part of ANC surveillance.

Resource-sparing Post-mastectomy Radiotherapy in Breast Cancer

This study compares two different field set-ups in patients with breast cancer following a breast resection (mastectomy). These two set-ups are as follows: arm a - radiotherapy to the chest-wall only, and arm b - radiotherapy to the chest-wall and the supraclavicular fossa. Patients in both treatment arms will receive radiotherapy with a shortened fractionation schedule. Study hypothesis: irradiation of the chest-wall only is not inferior to irradiation of the chest-wall and supraclavicular fossa in terms of loco-regional control, survival and treatment toxicity.
