NCT ID: NCT04056871 Completed - Clinical trials for Postoperative Delirium

Different Frailty Scores to Incidence of Post-operative Delirium and Cognitive Dysfunction

Start date: August 20, 2019
Phase:
Study type: Observational

Patients who are frail will have higher rate for post-operative morbidities, mortality, prolonged hospital stays, loss of independence, increase in institutionalization, post-operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) and delirium (POD). So, it is crucial to find a suitable frailty assessment tool that can be incorporated into a guideline and reference for our local setting in geriatric peri-operative management. In the mean time, create awareness regarding the frailty elderly population with POD, POCD and other associated poor outcomes among our clinicians.

Oral Hygiene Reminders in Orthodontic Patients

Start date: January 2, 2018
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Objective: To determine the effect of WhatsApp and Email reminders on oral hygiene compliance of orthodontic patients. Methods: A Randomized, parallel group, double blinded study was conducted on 54 patients undergoing orthodontic treatment at MAHSA University. They were randomized to 3 groups, namely WhatsApp (W) group, Email (E) group and Control (C) group with 18 subjects in each group. Group (W) and Group (E) received oral health messages once a week through WhatsApp and E-mail reminders respectively, while Group (C) did not receive any reminders. Plaque was measured at baseline (T0), after 4 weeks (T1), and after 8 weeks (T2). For each subject, two intraoral photographs were taken after application of plaque disclosing agent; and the area covered by plaque was measured on 12, 13, 43, 22, 23 and 33 teeth by planimetry.

NCT ID: NCT04032548 Completed - Gingivitis Clinical Trials

Start date: February 18, 2019
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Mouthrinses have been in used for centuries as breath fresheners, medicaments, and antiseptics. Recently, propolis has caught the eyes of dentists worldwide and researches are being carried out to infuse the usage of propolis in the dental health care treatments. There is belief that propolis may have a role as a tooth decay prophylaxis and help heal oral ulcers. Propolis is used as mouthwash, toothpaste, oral gel, and throat lozenges because of its proclaimed antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Propolis has shown activity against common periodontal microorganisms, such as Candida species and the Streptococci mutans in vitro studies. Till date, no study has evaluated the clinical and microbiological effects of Malaysian Propolis as a mouthwash. Thus, the present study is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of Propolis as a mouthwash in the reduction of Plaque and gingivitis. The aim of the study is to assess and compare the effectiveness of Propolis mouthrinse with Chlorhexidine mouthrinse.

What would this involve? Participant will be required fill up demographic data and answer the STOP-Bang and Epworth sleepiness scale questionnaires. After that participant will need to wear a wrist watch pulse oximeter just before going to sleep at night until the next morning (minimum of 6 hours of sleep required). The wrist watch will then be returned to researcher the following day for data analysis purpose. The benefits We hope to screen and identify those who are at risk of having obstructive sleep apnea and start early treatment among doctor who often have irregular sleep patterns and insufficient sleep due to the nature and timing of their work.

NCT ID: NCT04010500 Completed - Speech Clinical Trials

Speech Performance of Rugby Players When Using Different Types of Mouthguard

Start date: May 18, 2018
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Participation in contact sports is linked to an increased risk of dental injuries. To reduce the risk and severity of sports-related dental injuries, mouthguards are often recommended to be worn during training and competition. However, athletes often complain that they cannot talk properly when using mouthguards. It is hypothesized that speech performance differs when using different types of mouthguards. A group of female national rugby players will be asked to pronounce four Malay words with plosive sounds (/p/, /b/, /d/ and /t/) repeatedly in three conditions: (i) when not using any mouthguard, (ii) when using 'boil and bite' mouthguard, and (iii) when using custom-fitted mouthguard. The sounds will be recorded for spectrographic analysis. The difference in mean voice onset time between conditions will be assessed.
