Effects of Nebivolol Versus Carvedilol on Cardiopulmonary Function at High Altitude in Healthy Subjects.

Exposure of healthy subjects to high altitude hypoxia elicits changes in cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic features as weel as in exercise performance similar, for some aspects, to those observed in chronic heart failure. Exposure to high altitude hypoxia represents a suitable model to assess different treatments proposed for this pathological condition. Our aim was to evaluate the impact of two different third-generation beta-blockers used in heart failure (carvedilol and nebivolol) on cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic profile and on exercise performance at high altitude.

Study of Continuous Cardiac Monitoring to Assess Atrial Fibrillation After Cryptogenic Stroke

The 2006 American Heart Association / American Stroke Association Council on Stroke Guidelines for Prevention of Stroke in Patients With Ischemic Stroke or Transient Ischemic recommended that patients with cryptogenic stroke take antithrombotic drugs (i.e. aspirin) in order to prevent a second stroke. When a stroke patient is found to have atrial fibrillation (AF), the guidelines recommend oral anticoagulation due to its superior efficacy over aspirin for stroke prevention. Physicians can best optimize the use of medicines only if they can precisely and correctly diagnose a patient's AF. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the time to first AF by 6 months' continuous rhythm monitoring versus control treatment in subjects with a recent cryptogenic stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) without history of AF.

Antiretroviral-Sparing Concept With HIV-specific T Cell Precursors With High Proliferative Capacity (PHPC)

PHPC-02 is a phase II, randomized, placebo-controlled trial designed to investigate whether therapeutic immunization during highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) induces elevations of HIV-specific T cell precursors with high proliferative capacity (PHPC) in HIV-1-infected individuals, and whether the quantity of PHPC correlates with the viral load set point following analytical treatment interruption (ATI). Subjects will be randomized to receive either DermaVir Patch (8 subjects per cohort) or DermaVir Patch Placebo (8 subjects per cohort) every four weeks for three applications while receiving maximally suppressive HAART. HAART will be discontinued at Week 9 for an ATI period of 20 weeks.

This study is to evaluate the safety, tolerability and immunogenicity of 13-valent pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine in children with Sickle Cell Disease who have already been vaccinated with 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine. The study will measure the amount of antibodies (the proteins that fight off germs) produced by children with Sickle Cell Disease after they have been given the 13-valent pneumococcal vaccine between 6 and less than 18 years of age. They will be given the vaccination twice, each vaccination separated by approximately 6 months.
