Comparative Study of Non-Invasive Mask Ventilation vs Cuirass Ventilation in Patients With Acute Respiratory Failure.

Non-invasive ventilation has become increasingly important in the management of patients with acute respiratory failure. One of its major goals is to prevent the need for invasive ventilation, which is associated with numerous complications. This study compares the usefulness and safety of two noninvasive techniques which are used in Medical practice: Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation using a face mask and extrathoracic biphasic ventilation using a cuirass. Each of these techniques has advantages and disadvantages and both may not suit all patients. It is therefore important to compare the two in terms of effectiveness in preventing invasive ventilation and their side effects profile, so that we can improve our understanding and expertise in the treatment of patients in respiratory failure.

Relationship Between Auto NRT and Behavioural T & C Levels With the Nucleus Freedom Cochlear Implant

Cochlear implants require programming on an individual basis to provide appropriate levels of electrical stimulation. This program, or "map", is placed in the speech processor of the cochlear implant. Success of implantation largely depends on the adequacy of this map. Cochlear implant fitting remains a difficult challenge in congenitally or pre-linguistically deafened children. It requires competence of experienced audiologists with expertise in behavioral techniques for hearing function assessment.Our goal is to establish the offset correlation between objective measurements (NRT and ESRT) and the behavioral measurements of T & Cs in different stimulation rates in the Freedom SP System.

Valganciclovir in Prevention of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Reactivation Following Allogeneic-Stem Cell Transplantation (SCT)

The rationale for this protocol is based on the need to assess if the current post stem cell transplantation CMV prophylaxis strategies (e.g. high-dose acyclovir plus pre-emptive treatment) can be improved by the use of valganciclovir. CMV is the most common viral infection following stem cell transplantation, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, CMV has been shown to be associated with a number of indirect effects in SCT recipients including allograft dysfunction, acute and chronic graft versus host disease (GVHD). Valganciclovir is shown to be more active than oral ganciclovir, and as good as intravenous (i.v.) ganciclovir in treating newly diagnosed CMV retinitis. The use of valganciclovir for CMV prophylaxis post stem cell transplantation was never tested in controlled study. The investigators therefore suggest a prospective, randomized study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of valganciclovir compared with acyclovir for prevention of CMV disease in allogeneic stem cell transplantation recipients.

Assessment of Efficacy and Safety of Thioctic Acid in the Oral Treatment of Symptomatic Diabetic Neuropathy (SYDNEY 2)

The primary objective of the trial is to determine the optimal dose of orally (tablet) administered thioctic acid in the treatment of symptoms of diabetic polyneuropathy (dPNP). It is expected that at least one of the three dosages to be tested (600, 1200, or 1800 mg tablets) of orally administered thioctic acid improves the symptoms of dPNP as compared to placebo. Secondary objectives are evaluations of other variables pertinent to dPNP, safety, and tolerability.
