Self-expandable Esophageal Stent Versus Balloon Tamponade in Refractory Esophageal Variceal Bleeding.

In the last years, important advances have been done in the treatment and prevention of esophageal variceal bleeding. Experts agree that the combination of pharmacological and endoscopic therapy should be the first line therapy in the acute bleeding episode; whereas TIPS (transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt) is considered a rescue therapy. Nevertheless, some patients would require different therapies to act as a "bridge" until definitive therapy can be instituted. Balloon tamponade (using the Sengstaken tube) represents, up to now, the most widely used temporary "bridge" to TIPS. However, balloon tamponade is associated with a high incidence of serious adverse events. Recently, the use of self-expanding metal stents have been introduced in the treatment of acute variceal bleeding showing a very high hemostatic efficacy with no adverse events. The present study is directed to compare the efficacy free of adverse events and mortality of self-expanding metal stents vs balloon tamponade in patients with variceal bleeding refractory to medical and endoscopic therapy.

Randomized Study of ON 01910.Na in Refractory Myelodysplastic Syndrome Patients With Excess Blasts

The primary objective of this study is to compare overall survival (OS) in patients receiving ON 01910.Na + best supportive care (BSC) to OS of patients receiving BSC in a population of patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) with excess blasts (5% to 30% bone marrow blasts) who have failed azacitidine or decitabine treatment. This patient population has no available therapy and a short life expectancy (approximately 4 months). The high level of bone marrow activity of ON 01910.Na documented in Phase 1 and 2 studies has the potential to delay substantially the transition of MDS to Acute Myeloid Leukemia(AML), a very significant and severe complication, which shortens survival of these MDS patients.

The primary objective of this observational study is to document and describe current treatment regimens and disease progression of patients with Multiple Myeloma (MMY). The aim of this registry is to provide accurate, descriptive information on the way Multiple Myeloma is treated in routine clinical practice. The registry will collect information related to the treatment received for Multiple Myeloma. About 3000 patients will take part in the study in about 28 countries. The registry will only collect information that is already in medical files regarding treatment. Patients will not be required to actively do anything in addition to what would be done without participating in this registry, nor will there be any procedures or interventions that are not already part of the current treatment.
