Machine Learning Platforms to Predict 30-day Mortality After Emergency Laparotomy

This study seeks to utilise retrospective patient data to train machine learning algorithms to predict the short term mortality and morbidity after an emergency laparotomy. Data will be collected via the Electronic Health records system at the Queen Mary Hospital Hong Kong. Machine learning models will be compared and the best-performing one will be explored for further optimization and deployment. Upon completion, we hope that this platform will aid clinicians to identify high risk patients and aid clinical decisions and peri-operative planning, with the aim to reduce mortality and morbidity in this high risk procedure.

This study is a multicenter cross-sectional survey of esophageal cancer patients who underwent radical chemoradiotherapy/radiotherapy from July 2017 to July 2020 in various medical centers, and who survived without disease progression at the time of the survey. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the current quality of life, as well as the incidence of long-term toxic side effects, nutritional status, and psychological status of esophageal cancer patients cured by radiotherapy.

Regional nerve block is one of the commonly used methods for postoperative analgesia after thoracoscopic surgery. Recent studies have found that rebound pain may occur after regional block, which is defined as acute postoperative pain that occurs after the resolution of sensory block related to regional anesthesia, and seriously affects the quality of postoperative recovery of patients. There is evidence that rebound tenderness is associated with local anesthetic toxicity and proinflammatory effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of dexamethasone on rebound pain after a single intercostal nerve block in patients undergoing thoracoscopic surgery.

Although immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) provide a durable response in multiple tumor types, relapse occurs in most patients with solid tumor. However, the benefits of retreatment with ICIs remains controversial. In some studies, retreatment with ICIs has exhibited encouraging efficacy in patients with solid tumors, particularly in melanoma, and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In this single arm phase 2 trial, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the combination of anti-PD1 antibody (zimberelimab) and lenvatinib in patients with advanced cervical cancer who progressed on or after prior ICIs.

Multiple lines of evidence have shown that anesthesia method is associated with long-term outcomes in patients undergoing surgery due to cancers, including lung, breast, prostate, and bladder cancer, etc. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) have been validated as prognostic biomarkers of a number of cancers. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of anesthesia methods on the number of CTCs in patients receiving transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT). The difference of anesthesia method is achieved by using general anesthesia in one group and spinal anesthesia in the other group.
