Evaluation of the German Short-Form Qualiveen Questionnaire

Two questionnaires (Qualiveen full version and Qualiveen short-form (SF)), the project information and the consent form will be sent to individuals who are scheduled for an annual control at the urological out-patient clinic of the Swiss Paraplegic Centre and who fulfill the inclusion criteria. The patients will be asked to complete the two questionnaires and to bring the completed questionnaires and the signed consent form to the annual control at the Swiss Paraplegic Centre. Participants who have consented and completed the two questionnaires will receive the two questionnaires a second time 14 days later. The primary objective of this project is to validate the German version of the SF Qualiveen questionnaire. The secondary objective is to evaluate the measurement properties of the German SF Qualiveen questionnaire in comparison with the full version.

Animal-assisted Placebo-induced Analgesia

An increased interest of animal-assisted interventions (AAI) can be observed within clinical practice, even though it is still not entirely clear how the presence of an animal contributes to the outcome of a treatment. One theory maintains that the presence of an animal influences the relationship between health-provider and patient, which then in turn affects the outcome of the treatment. To investigate this theory, this study will combine AAI with a placebo intervention, as placebo interventions offer the basic form of intervention working through relationship and expectancy. The effects of the presence of a dog will be assessed with a standardized experimental heat pain paradigm (TSA-II) in a randomized controlled trial in healthy participants (N=128). After a baseline measurements of heat pain threshold and tolerance, participants will be randomly assigned to one of the following four conditions: a) analgesia-expectation, no dog present, b) analgesia-expectation, dog present, c) no-expectation, no dog present and d) no-expectation, dog present. The dog will be introduced after randomization. Expectancy will be induced by a deceptive cream which is said to helps against pain. Afterwards, posttreatment measurements will be conducted and participants fill in questionnaires about their perceptions of the experimenter.

Prevalence of chronic subjective tinnitus is rising with age and associated with maladaptive oscillatory changes in auditory as well as non-auditory regions of the brain such as the insula and the anterior cingulate cortex which are known to be key points within the salience and distress networks of the brain.Thus, we are conducting a clinical trial by implementing those auditory as well as non-auditory regions into a tomographical neurofeedback Training (ToNF) -protocol. Prior to 12 electroencephalography (EEG) -based ToNF-trainings with 36 older participants using standardized Low Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography Software (sLORETA, Pascual-Marqui 2002), participants' brains will be measured using structural magnet resonance imaging (sMRI) in order to identify potential structural markers for training success (e.g. cortical thickness). Training success will be measured by oscillatory change via EEG before and after the training period as well as by means of follow-up measures. Furthermore, a comprehensive battery of behavioral and psychometric standardized self-report questionnaires will be applied. Based on this multifocal (Insula, dorsal anterior cingulate cortex & auditory cortex) ToNF we expect oscillatory changes resulting in decreased tinnitus symptoms such as perceived loudness and distress.

Carbon PEEK Versus Titanium Pedicle Screws in the Treatment of Spinal Tumors

Radiation therapy is a cornerstone in the treatment of spinal neoplasms as radical resections are often limited anatomically. Frequently, a surgical stabilization with implants is required. However, metallic implants not only make the CT-based planning of a subsequent radiation therapy more difficult, but might also have an uncontrolled dose modulating effect in adjuvant radiotherapy. At the spine, radiation is limited by the effective dose posed to the relatively radiosensitive spinal cord. While metallic implants might result in an inhomogeneous and uncontrollable dose distribution due to the interface effect, the use of new radiolucent implants consisting of carbon/polyether ether ketone (PEEK) might allow a more homogeneous and predictable dose distribution. This study aims to evaluate the potential benefits of the use of carbon/PEEK pedicle screws during adjuvant radiation therapy and follow-up imaging of spinal tumors. 60 patients will randomized 1:1 into either treatment arm (Pedicle System Carbon/PEEK vs. Pedicle System Titanium). The feasibility of planning the radiation therapy will be evaluated. The postoperatively administered total radiation dose is documented. The radiological visualization of the area of interest will be evaluated The surgical outcome is evaluated by fusion rate, implant integrity and anchorage. Patients will be followed up for 12 months according to local standards.
