Heparin Dose and Post Operative Bleeding in Cardiopulmonary Bypass Patients

Blood is anticoagulated using a drug named heparin during open-heart surgery to allow it to safely pass through the heart-lung machine which pumps the blood throughout the body during the surgery. Each patient is given the heparin they need for their surgery. This means some patients receive more or less heparin than other patients. In this study, the investigators will be evaluating the current anticoagulation protocol for open heart surgery in use at the Royal University Hospital. The goal of this project is to compare patients who require and receive more heparin for proper anticoagulation to those patients who require and receive less heparin. Open-heart surgery will proceed according to the standard hospital protocol. All research participants will be treated according to standard post-open heart surgery protocol in the ICU. This will include measurement of blood loss by keeping track of chest tube outputs and administration of blood transfusions. This study focuses on Saskatoon Health Region patients having open heart surgery in terms of the protocol for anticoagulation and blood transfusions.

Bereaving, But Not Alone : the Development and Actualization of a Mutual Aid Group for Children Who Have Lost a Parent.

The methodology of this clinical trial is based on the realisation of a group intervention with children who lost a parent. Interviews preintervention and postintervention with participants will be done as well. The purpose of this study is to answer the following question: "What are the benefits for children who are in the process of bereaving a parent to participate in a group work intervention based on the mutual aid model ?". The aim of the research is to explore the benefits for grieving children to participate in an group work intervention based on the mutual aid model. To do so, the research has three distinct objectives : 1) to develop and apply a program of group work interventions for grieving children based on the mutual aid model ; 2) to explore the extent to which participation in the group facilitates changes in the children's discourse about death and the loss of their parents, and 3) to examine, from the children's own perceptive, the possible impact that their participation in the group have on their experience of bereavement.

Parkinson's disease involves many motor difficulties as well as non-motor ones. Recent research has strongly suggested that exercise is very important for Parkinson's disease. We are interested especially in dance as a form of exercise, because it combines physical movements with balance tasks, social engagement, and mental stimulation. Therefore, we think dance classes may be a very beneficial exercise for Parkinson's disease; the purpose of this study is to see if Argentinean Tango classes might improve motor and non-motor manifestations of Parkinson's disease.

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the "Taking Charge: Managing JIA Online" Internet intervention, when compared with an attention (static education only websites) control group in improving pain and HRQL as well as other health outcomes (anxiety, depression, treatment adherence, pain coping, knowledge, and self-efficacy) in adolescents with JIA. The proposed study will enroll and randomize 294 adolescents with JIA attending 10 pediatric rheumatology hospital clinics in the Canada to either the experimental or control groups.

The purpose of this Phase III study is to evaluate the long-term safety and tolerability of two fixed-dose combinations of inhaled aclidinium bromide/formoterol fumarate, aclidinium bromide, formoterol fumarate and placebo in patients with moderate to severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Long-term efficacy, pharmacoeconomic and health-related quality of life assessments will also be evaluated. This extension study will include a 28 week treatment period, followed by a four week follow up visit. All patients will remain in the same treatment group as for the lead-in study and continue on one of the four treatment arms or placebo.
