Pain Management Using Guided Imagery for Adolescents Post-spinal Fusion

Surgery to correct scoliosis (spinal fusion)generates a severe pain intensity rending pain management a complex task. Several studies have found out that pharmacological interventions alone were not enough to provide optimal pain management for these patients. The investigators developed a DVD on guided imagery, customized for teenagers, to help them cope better with their pain. The investigators believe that this type of intervention combined with their usual analgesic medication will help them to control their pain and foster rehabilitation.

ODYSSEY Outcomes: Evaluation of Cardiovascular Outcomes After an Acute Coronary Syndrome During Treatment With Alirocumab

Primary Objective: To compare the effect of alirocumab with placebo on the occurrence of cardiovascular (CV) events (composite endpoint of coronary heart disease (CHD) death, non-fatal myocardial infarction (MI), fatal and non-fatal ischemic stroke, unstable angina (UA) requiring hospitalization) in participants who experienced an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) event 4 to 52 weeks prior to randomization and were treated with evidence-based medical and dietary management of dyslipidemia. Secondary Objectives: - To evaluate the effect of alirocumab on secondary endpoints (any CHD event , major CHD event, any CV event, composite of all cause mortality/non-fatal MI/non-fatal ischemic stroke, CHD deaths, CV deaths, all cause mortality). - To evaluate the safety and tolerability of alirocumab. - To evaluate the effect of alirocumab on lipid parameters.

Steroid-Induced Osteoporosis in the Pediatric Population - Canadian Incidence Study

To determine the magnitude and rate of bone mass deficits following initiation of glucocorticoid therapy for the treatment of pediatric leukemia, rheumatic conditions and nephrotic syndrome, we propose a 6 year, prospective study in 12 academic, tertiary care centres across Canada. The investigators hypothesize that glucocorticoid-treated children with leukemia, rheumatic conditions and nephrotic syndrome will fail to accrue bone mass at a normal rate, and that deficits in mineral accrual will occur in a glucocorticoid dose- and duration-dependent fashion. We also hypothesize that the fracture incidence will increase with concomitant reductions in bone mass.

A Study of Onartuzumab in Combination With mFOLFOX6 in Participants With Metastatic HER2-Negative and MET-Positive Gastroesophageal Cancer

This randomized, multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled study will evaluate the efficacy and safety of onartuzumab (MetMAb) in combination with 5-fluorouracil, folinic Acid, and oxaliplatin (mFOLFOX6) in participants with metastatic human epidermal growth receptor (HER) 2-negative and MET-positive adenocarcinoma of the stomach or gastroesophageal junction. Participants will be randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive either onartuzumab or placebo in combination with mFOLFOX6. Participants may continue to receive onartuzumab or placebo until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity, participant or physician decision to discontinue treatment.

Effect of Superficial Cervical Plexus Block on the Postoperative Quality of Recovery

Pain and discomfort after anterior cervical spine surgery is difficult to quantify and quoted as moderate in severity, often needing oral opioid analgesics. In addition, these patients are more prone for postoperative respiratory complication due to airway edema secondary to surgical retraction or wound hematoma. Opioid analgesics provide good pain control but postoperative nausea and vomiting and respiratory depression are undesirable in these patients who are at risk for postoperative wound hematoma and airway edema The use of multimodal analgesia is rapidly becoming the 'standard of care' for preventing pain after ambulatory procedures at most surgery centers throughout the world . The purpose of this study is to determine whether superficial cervical plexus block will improve the postoperative quality of recovery as measured by Quality of Recovery 40 questionnaire (QoR-40) in patients undergoing elective anterior cervical discectomy and fusion.

Homeopathic Treatment of Fatigue in Children Receiving Chemotherapy

Cancer-related fatigue has been described as a subjective feeling of physical, emotional, and/or cognitive tiredness. Fatigue is frequently identified as one of the most troublesome symptoms in pediatric cancer patients. Fatigue affects children with cancer throughout the trajectory of their disease. Treatment interventions for cancer-related fatigue have been largely unsuccessful. Homeopathy involves treatment of patients with diluted natural substances aimed at stimulating the body's healing system. In the efficacy trial literature, individualized homeopathy shows the most promise over other forms of homeopathic intervention. Individualized homeopathic treatment involves a unique yet established method of case taking. During the consultation, the homeopath asks a series of broad questions to elicit subjective symptoms related to the patient's disease, their medical history, as well as particular characteristics (physical or psychological) related to the individual. This study will recruit children receiving chemotherapy to undergo homeopathic remedies to treat their fatigue. This study hypothesizes that homeopathic treatment will effectively treat fatigue.
