Breath Control and Mindfulness for Post Concussion Anxiety and Depression: a Feasibility Study

Persistent-post-concussion symptoms (PPCS) is a condition that effects on average one in seven persons following a concussion. Anxiety and depression symptoms are experienced by over one-third of those with PPCS. These symptoms can delay recovery from a concussion. Two techniques used to treat anxiety and depression symptoms are breath control and mindfulness exercises. This 8-week feasibility study will evaluate the implementation and compliance of a remote delivered breathing and mindfulness treatment program for individuals experiencing PPCS anxiety or depression symptoms.

Electronic Capture of Adherence Barriers for HIV Care

Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) remains problematic. Our team has thus developed a new patient-reported measure of barriers to ART adherence (the I-Score) which will be completed by HIV patients through the Opal patient portal for routine HIV care. This 6-month mixed method pilot study will implement the I-Score/Opal intervention with 5 HIV physicians at the McGill University Health Centre (Montreal, Quebec) and 30 of their patients. The study's primary objectives are to assess patient and physician perceptions of the intervention (e.g., acceptability) and evaluate the implementation strategy. The data collected will help plan and determine the feasibility of a definitive effectiveness trial.

Effects of Wearing a Face Mask During CrossFit Exercise

Gymnasiums have been identified as being susceptible to virus transmission; therefore, wearing face masks during exercise is important during pandemics. This study will evaluate performance and physiological stress during high-intensity exercise while wearing a face mask during Crossfit exercise training.

Effect of Early Eating on Body Composition

To our knowledge, as of this day there are only four studies which examined the effects of eTRE with a duration of 12 weeks. There are no studies that examined this phenomenon beyond 12 weeks, one study that lasted five weeks and four studies that lasted 4 weeks or less, some even days. The four studies that lasted 12 weeks in duration all have opportunities to improve upon, which will be discussed here. The first study performed by Gabel et al., focused primarily on measuring body weight, not body composition in older adults. The eating window also began later in the morning at 1000h and finished at 1800h. There also was no restriction on participants consuming caffeine during the fasting window. The second study conducted by Gasmi et al., was focused on strictly older male participants that were active and healthy, again, without measuring body composition. The third study conducted by Wilkinson et al., did not measure body composition and the eating window lasted 10 hours instead of 8. The fourth study performed by Chow et al., examined eTRE with adults aged 45+/-12 years old and did not mention any exclusion criteria based upon physical activity levels or restrictions on caffeine/artificial sweetener intake during the fasting window. Furthermore, none of the studies mentioned above examined eTRE against lTRE directly. We believe that the proposed study will address the concerns mentioned previously and further knowledge associated with eTRE.

The Efficacy of a Topical Anti-adhesive Film for Decreasing Perihepatic Adhesions in Repeat Hepatic Surgery

There has been an increase in the need for repeat hepatic surgery, especially for patients with colorectal liver metastasis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Adhesions at the time of repeat surgery can lead to increased operative times, higher blood loss and even increased perioperative morbidity. Not much data exists regarding use of anti-adhesion barriers at the time of index hepatectomy and their effect on adhesions at repeat hepatectomy. This randomized controlled trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of a hyaluronan and cellulose based antiadhesive topical film at index hepatectomy in reducing perihepatic adhesions at the time of repeat hepatic surgery.

Ablation and Cementoplasty for Painful Bone Lesions

The aim of this research study is to assess the effectiveness of combined ablation and cementoplasty in the treatment of spinal, pelvic, and extraspinal lesions causing pain resistant to conventional treatment at our centre. In particular, the investigator seek to verify the safety and efficacy for multiple primary tumor types and benign lesions as well as encompass multiple measurements of outcome, including visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, opioid and analgesic use, and overall performance scales, combined with cross-sectional imaging follow-up to assess tumor burden, to ascertain a comprehensive Canadian single-centre experience that has been lacking in previous studies.

Measuring Fluid Flow in the Brain Using Alcohol and MRI in Healthy Participants

Intracranial interstitial fluid (ISF) flow is crucial for adequate clearance of extracellular waste products from the brain parenchyma. Recent demonstrations have shown that a deficiency in flow leads to the accumulation of such waste products in neurodegenerative disorders. Unfortunately, no clinical investigation that gives a quantitative measure of ISF flow exists. Such a test could prove very useful in the clinical setting for multiple neurologic disorders by providing a measure of potential diagnostic importance, as well as yielding a means to monitor response to treatment. The investigators hypothesize that such an investigation can be developed using magnetic resonance spectroscopy to give a quantitative measure of ISF flow, using spectroscopy of ethanol as a dynamic marker of interstitial fluid. Beneficially, the approach is non-invasive. This pilot project aims to develop this technique with proof of concept in healthy volunteers (males in the age range of 20-75). This pilot project aims to develop the technique, demonstrating its ability to detect ISF flow and potential differences in rates among healthy volunteers. Success at this stage will give rise to this technique being extended to studies involving individuals with various forms of intracranial pathology for comparison with values seen in healthy individuals, with the ultimate goal of it providing a measure of diagnostic significance in multiple clinical scenarios.

Virtual for Care Atrial Fibrillation Patients Using VIRTUES

Patients will atrial fibrillation, a type of irregular heart rhythm, frequently go to the emergency room in order to manage their condition. This study will use a chart review to look at the characteristics and frequency of atrial fibrillation patients who go to the emergency room. In addition to the chart review, patients with atrial fibrillation who have recently gone to the emergency room or have been hospitalized will be approached and asked if they want to use an electronic health care system that can be accessed by both themselves and their health care providers. Along with the system, patients will be given a Health Canada approved heart rhythm sensor, so patients will be able to record their heart rhythm when they feel symptoms and send the information to the heart rhythm team. The heart rhythm team will then make real-time recommendations to the patient about how they can manage their rhythm and symptoms. Patients will be asked to complete satisfaction and quality of life surveys. Our goal is to provide efficient and effective care for patients with AF, resulting in decreased repeat ED visits.
