This study aims to demonstrate that patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) and B (CHB) experiencing regression of liver cirrhosis after effective antiviral therapy have decreased risk for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Primary aim is to determine the incidence of HCC in patients with cirrhosis secondary to CHC and CHB, after treatment is provided, and to identify the magnitude of the decreased risk for HCC in patients experiencing regression of fibrosis. As a secondary aim, environmental risk factors for HCC development will be sought, in order to determine a subset of patients in whom it will be safe to stop surveillance.
The investigators hope to improve overall median survival of patients with recurrent Glioblastoma by investigating continuous low-dose daily Temozolomide plus or minus five treatments of re-irradiation.
In the unfortunate case of severe hypoglycaemia, glucagon is the first-line treatment because of its potent and rapid action starting as fast as 5 minutes after subcutaneous or intramuscular injection. Large dose of glucagon such as 1 mg subcutaneous is usually associated with undesirable side-effects such as nausea, vomiting, bloating and headache. The overall objective of this research proposal is to assess the efficacy of lower subcutaneous doses of glucagon (0.1 mg or 0.2 mg) to correct hypoglycaemia compared to the standard dose (1.0 mg) in adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). It is postulated that much lower dosages of glucagon (0.1 or 0.2 mg) injected subcutaneously will be just as effective as the current recommended dose of 1.0 mg to correct hypoglycaemia without the undesirable gastro-intestinal side effects.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death world-wide. Dyspnea (i.e., sensations of breathlessness) is the hallmark symptom of patients with this disease. Pulmonary rehabilitation programs that incorporate exercise training remain the most effective non-pharmacological method of reducing dyspnea in COPD, however it is not understood how exercise training relieves dyspnea. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to determine if pulmonary rehabilitation can reduce the disparity between the drive to breathe and the breathing response in patients with COPD and to determine if this reduction is associated with improvements in dyspnea during exercise. The investigators hypothesise pulmonary rehabilitation will reduce dyspnea at a standardized work rate and this reduction will be directly related to an improvement in the breathing response.
This multicenter, randomised, double-dummy, Fumaderm® and placebo-controlled, parallel-group study will compare the efficacy and safety of 500 mg of FP187 (250 mg twice daily) compared to 720 mg Fumaderm® (240 mg three times daily) over 20 weeks of treatment. After an initial wash-out non-drug treatment phase of 1 to 6 weeks, all patients will receive allocated Study treatment up-titrated to the relevant dose level (i.e., 500 mg daily FP187, 720 mg daily Fumaderm®, or placebo). The up-titration to full dose will last 4 weeks for FP187 and 9 weeks for Fumaderm®. After 20 weeks of treatment, all patients will be asked to enter a separate open label treatment protocol expected to continue for up to 5 years.
